Barça B Roundup: Poor but still on top

Barcelona B endured another frustrating affair in Segunda B Group III on Sunday as they took the short trip to the home of CE Sabadell, Nova Creu Alta, where they recorded their sixth draw of the season.

Gerard López made a few changes to the normally consistent B team line up for the midday match-up between to two Catalan sides. Juvenil A full-back Marc Cucurella took the spot of Moises Delgado who picked up an injury against Atlético Levante, forward Jesús Alfaro entered the starting eleven in place of Dani Romera and Marlon Santos made a start after suspension.

Bad start

Gerard’s men made a promising start to proceedings as Alberto Perea struck the post with just four minutes played after a good move from the reserves, and Alfaro had a ninth minute effort deflected over the goal of Jokin Ezkieta, the Sabadell ‘keeper on loan from Barcelona.

Despite a seemingly positive start, Barcelona B saw themselves a goal down after a Sabadell corner floated over everyone, including a stranded José Suárez, the ball unfortunately bouncing against Marlon and finding its way into the net.

The goal came against the run of play and Barça continued to press after going down but lacked quality finishing as the usually clinical Marc Cardona blazed over the bar when through on goal halfway through the first half, and Gerard Gumbau added to the missed chances a few minutes later as Barcelona went into halftime a goal down.

Pressure

Fali made way for Jordi Mboula early in the second half after the former sustained an injury after a clash of heads. Although this substitution was forced, the fact that Gerard brought on the speedy winger for a midfielder showed Barcelona B were really chasing this game.

Despite Barça putting on most of the pressure, Sabadell also had their chances and thanks to ‘keeper Suárez, Gerard’s men were still in with a shout of earning at least a point from the game.

Sabadell saw themselves down to ten men after defender Juanjo picked up a second yellow card, so the game was Barcelona’s to chase.

The Blaugrana’s pressure finally paid off in the dying moments of the game as Perea hit a hopeful and somewhat lazy left-footed shot towards goal, which took a deflection looping the ball over Ezkieta to make the score 1-1.

Whilst results like this against lower table sides like Sabadell are in no way ideal for Barça, they showed great determination and persistence to prevent themselves returning to the Catalan capital empty-handed. Despite the points, Gerard will surely be looking for performances to improve as his side have looked fairly dull in the last few weeks and have failed to convert their chances in their last two matches.

Alcoyano once again failed to capitalise on Barça’s dropping of points against Sadadell, as the second place side lost 2-1 to Lleida Esportiu, meaning the reserves stay on top of Segunda B Group III for another week. Next up for Barça is a home game on Saturday against 14th placed Llagostera.
