Basque referee Miguel Ángel Pérez Lasa has been tipped for the job of refereeing the season’s final match Sunday against Valladolid at the Camp Nou. Meanwhile in the south of Spain, baby-faced Alberto Undiano Mallenco will blow the whistle in the day’s other decisive encounter pitting Malaga against Real Madrid.
FC Barcelona players will see a familiar face on the pitch for Saturday’s crucial clash with Sevilla at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Although Mallenco is an unquestionably qualified referee, our recent experience with him suggests that we will get no favors during the match. And given the mild controversy his performance in Barcelona elicited just weeks ago, one has to wonder why he has been selected to referee the team again so soon at such a crucial juncture in the season.
Basque referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro will enforce the rules of the game in Tuesday’s clash between FC Barcelona and CD Tererife at the Camp Nou. Back in March, Ferreiro was on the pitch for our 2-4 away victory over Zaragoza in a match that ended without controversy. But in previous outings, Ferreiro’s performance has been called into question by observers at all levels. Reprinted below is an updated profile of Ferreiro that first appeared at totalBarca before the Zaragoza game. Continue reading »
On Saturday in Villareal’s Madrigal stadium, FC Barcelona will encounter an old foe in the form of referee Fernando Teixeira Vitienes. The last time he presided over a Barcelona match, a 2-1 victory over Getafe earlier this season, he produced two red cards, ejecting defenders Rafa Marquez and Gerard Pique. Does Pep’s squad need to prepare themselves for yet another refereeing debacle, or can we count on an unbiased performance from Vitienes?

FC Barcelona players will renew their acquaintance with Belgium-born referee César Muñiz Fernández as he takes control of Saturday’s matchup with Xerez in the Camp Nou. Fernández last visited Catalonia in March as he presided over our 3-0 home victory over Valencia. Follow this link to the more detailed profile that ran on totalBarca before that match:
The derby between FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol is an ongoing cultural study in sporting rivalry – The city of Barcelona derby. Sociologist Undiano Mallenco will enforce the rules of the game when these two sides meet again on Saturday at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat. Continue reading »
Relative newcomer José Luis Paradas Romero will take charge of Wednesday’s league encounter between FC Barcelona and Deportivo La Coruna at the Camp Nou. After a run of marginal refereeing displays, wouldn’t it be nice to see some balanced decision-making in a Barcelona game? Hopefully, Romero will deliver just that.
Veteran Asturian referee Manuel Mejuto González will enforce the rules of the game in Saturday’s decisive clash between arch-enemies FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. In this decade, Madrid have never lost a game overseen by Mejuto González: will history repeat itself this weekend, or will Pep’s squad begin to write a new chapter in this rivalry? Bavarian Wolfgang Stark has been selected by FIFA to referee Barcelona’s most important match of the season, Tuesday’s contest with Arsenal at the Camp Nou. If we learned anything last week, it was that a poor referee can have a profound impact on a match. If Stark’s history is any indication, it suggests that we may be in for another wild ride in Catalonia.
Valencian Mateu Lahoz will call the shots in Saturday’s clash at the Camp Nou when FC Barcelona take on Athletic Bilbao. Let’s hope for a better performance than the one we were treated to on Wednesday in London!
Swiss businessman Massimo Busacca will enforce the rules of the game on Wednesday when he takes charge of FC Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Arsenal in London.
Referee David Fernández Borbalán crosses paths once again with FC Barcelona this year, as he has been selected to oversee Saturday’s crucial match with RCD Mallorca.
Madrid native Carlos Velasco Carballo has been tipped to oversee Wednesday’s clash between FC Barcelona and Osasuna at the Camp Nou. Lovers of the beautiful game will be hoping that Carballo will leave his hometown allegiance behind him and deliver an impartial performance on the pitch.
FC Barcelona will face an old nemesis in Zaragoza this weekend in the form of Basque referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro.
Belgium-born referee César Muñiz Fernández will blow the whistle for Sunday’s Camp Nou clash between FC Barcelona and Valencia, the 26th round of the present La Liga campaign. Referees in the Spanish league have been under a microscope this season, with most of that attention focused around their performances in FC Barcelona and Real Madrid matches. Given the current climate, Fernández’ decisions in this key match will undoubtedly come under the closest scrutiny.
Zaragoza native, Carlos Clos Gomez, will dish out justice on the pitch for Saturday’s encounter between Almeria and FC Barcelona.
Madrileño Antonio Rubinos Pérez will oversee Saturday’s contest at the Camp Nou between FC Barcelona and Malaga. Perez (40), a chemical engineer by day, has been a first division referee in Spain since the 2002-03 season. In 2007, he was awarded his FIFA badge and has presided over a number of international UEFA Cup and Europa League matches.
Pérez has a reputation for being somewhat liberal in the way he dispenses justice on the field. Last season he showed 103 yellow cards in 18 matches. This season, he leads the league in red cards, with 8 players expelled in 12 matches; 49 yellow cards have also been thrown in for good measure.
FC Barcelona are no strangers to Perez’s disciplined approach to officiating. He infamously gave Barcelona defender, and Spanish youth international, Marc Muniesa (17) a straight red card on his official first team debut in last season’s home contest with Osasuna, a decision that was met with vigorous protests from players, coaches and fans alike. Perez also recently refereed the first leg of the 2009 Spanish Supercopa which pitted eventual winner Barcelona against Athletic Bilbao.

Holland’s Bjorn Kuipers (36), will place the metal between his lips to officiate tonights UEFA Champions League Fixture between Barcelona and Dynamo Kiev. This will be the first time that Kuipers will twiddle the flute to control the match at an elite level.
