Ex-Barca – Deco asks to leave Chelsea

According to reports in British newspaper The Sun and Portugal’s Abola, former FC Barcelona favourite and Portuguese midfielder Deco (32) has asked his current club Chelsea to allow him to leave in the summer. The Portuguese international wants to return to Brazilian football where he can be closer to his family. The player, born in Brazil, is quoted as saying, “I want to go back to Brazil. I feel I can still play at the highest level in the next two years but I want to be near my children. I would leave after the World Cup and have already talked with Chelsea about it.”

The player has only recently announced his plans to retire from international football after this summer’s World Cup, and it seems with only one year left on his current Chelsea contract the former Barca and Porto favourite has set his heart on a return to his homeland. Although he has not said to which club he would like to move, it is rumoured Flamenco are already lining up a move for the midfielder. “It depends on Chelsea, if they let me go for free, or on loan. I do not want to choose a preference (of club) but it is time to go back,” he said.

Portugal playmaker Deco has announced he will retire from International football after this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

The former Barça and Porto star (32), who moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2008, said, “I will end my cycle after the World Cup, for my age and because it is tiring, I will say goodbye after the World Cup”. He currently has 71 caps for his adopted country, with 5 goals to his name.

Although he left Barça under somewhat cloudy circumstances, Deco was a crucial part of Frank Riijkaard’s era, making 188 appearances and scoring 28 times for the club, winning two league titles, two Spanish Cups and of course the Champions League in the process
