Barcelona has found itself in many unusual situations this season due to injuries, health issues, and transfer speculation surrounding some of the club legends. The dilemma that Barça faced with Éric Abidal can easily be called unusual as well. Given the circumstances, there were no right or wrong options, but yet, any decision would upset some. And the decision not to renew Abidal’s contract surely upset many.

To even understand the situation, one must keep in mind that Barcelona renewed Abidal’s contract when the player was going through his recovery and there were no guarantees that he could ever play again. Barcelona, as a club, took the risk of investing in Abidal, knowing that they might get nothing back football-wise. But the club never abandoned him and Abidal’s health was reason enough for the club to support him and stand behind him, and I think we all agree that this was a great decision.

Brazilian star Neymar made a five year commitment to the Catalan club this Monday, signing a contract that binds him to the squad until June 2018. Accompanied by his father, the Brazilian prodigy put ink to paper in the company of club President Sandro Rosell, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and Andoni Zubizarreta. Other details of the deal have yet to made public, but tB will post them as soon as they become available.

The versatile Brazilian signed an extension that will see him legally bound to the club until the summer of 2017, taking him to 32 years old to which he said: “I’m committed to finishing my contract and to continue doing what I’ve done up until today.” His buyout clause remains at 90 million euros.

Xavi to renew next Monday

As announced through the Club’s official website, midfielder Xavi Hernández, who turns 33 on Friday, will be the next first team player to renew his contract with FC Barcelona. Following on the heels of captain Carles Puyol’s renewal on Tuesday, the midfielder from Terrassa will sign his new contract with Barça on Monday, January 28th, which will tie him to the Club through to the 30th of June of 2016. The signing will take place at the Club’s offices beginning at 16:00. Xavi’s current contract ends in June, 2014 but news of a two year extension emerged on December 18th, when the new deals with Puyol and Messi were also announced.

Official: Puyol signs contract extension

FC Barcelona captain and defender Carles Puyol (34) has signed a contract extension which will keep him in Barcelona until June 30 of 2016, according to an official statement on the club’s website.

Speaking with Barça TV the captain said he was very happy to have signed the contract because his idea was to continue with the club. Although he wants to take it one season at a time, Puyol indicated that this probably wasn’t his last contract renewal since he plans to keep playing until he’s 40. As a true professional he added: “Staying in shape is very important and I’m very aware that I have to take care of myself on and off the pitch. That’s what I try to do.”

FC Barcelona’s speedy homegrown winger Cristian Tello has officially renewed his contract with the club. The new deal binds Tello to Barcelona until June 2016. “This is probably the the most important day in my professional career,” the player tweeted shortly after meeting with club president Sandro Rosell to finalize the deal. The specific details of the new contract have yet to made public, but Tello’s buyout clause is rumored to have been set at 10 million Euros. The player will wear the 37 jersey until the end of this season.

Agreement with Vilanova through 2014

As announced today via their official website, FC Barcelona have reached an agreement with Francesc ‘Tito’ Vilanova for a two year contract as head coach of the first team. The new contract, which will run through June 30, 2014, will be signed by Vilanova this Friday, June 15th, at 12.

Following the contract signing, Vilanova will pose for official photos at 12:30 in front of the Club’s offices and then, at 13:00, will hold a press conference in the Paris room alongside Sandro Rosell and Andoni Zubizarreta. His presentation and all related activities will be streamed live via the Club’s official site.

Barça end Henrique’s contract

The Brazilian centre-half Henrique Adriano Buss, who was signed in summer 2008 and could never manage to break into Pep Guardiola’s side, has been released by FC Barcelona. The club announced that even though there was a year remaining on Henrique’s contract, the player and the club have agreed to amicably part ways and terminate the player’s contract.

Henrique along with compatriot Keirrison was one of former technical director Txiki Begiristain’s few signings that failed to make an impact at the club. The defender was signed from Palmeiras in the hope that he could be a formidable force in Barca’s defense. But not having impressed he was loaned thrice during his stint at Barca: first to Bayer Leverkusen, then to Racing Santander (two seasons) and finally to Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras.
