Eight FCB players called up for Catalan team

Gerard Lopez has called up eight players from FC Barcelona for his first match as coach of the Catalan national football team. Martín Montoya, Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Marc Bartra, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fábregas, Sergi Roberto and Cristian Tello have all been recruited for the friendly match against  Cape Verde to be held at the Stadium Lluís Companys on December 30.

FC Barcelona youngsters Marc Bartra (22) and Sergi Roberto (21) attended the Catalan Football Federation’s presentation of its annual exhibition of the Catalan National Team. The traditional winter friendly will be played against Cape Verde on Monday, December 30 at 7 pm local time. The game will be broadcast live on Catalan station TV3.

In this year’s annual friendly match, Johan Cruyff’s side will face Nigeria this afternoon on the outskirts of Barcelona. Nine Barça players have been included in the squad: Martín Montoya, Gerard Piqué, Carles Puyol, Marc Bartra, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernández, Cristian Tello, and Sergi Roberto. Though initially in the squad, goalkeeper Victor Valdés will miss this evening’s game. A number of former Barça players also grace the squad, including AC Milan’s Bojan Krkic, Jonathan Soriano from Red Bull Salzburg, and Espanyol players Joan Verdú, Víctor Sánchez, and Sergio García.

Morning training session for the Catalunya squad members

The players called up to the Catalunya squad for the friendly match this evening against Nigeria were the first blaugranes to return to work following the winter break. The only absentee from the session was Víctor Valdés, who has plantar fasciitis in his left foot and will miss this evening’s game with the Catalan national team. The Club has notified the Catalan Football Federation of the injury to the goalkeeper.

Puyol, Piqué, Montoya, Jordi Alba, Xavi, Sergio Busquets, Tello, Bartra, and Sergi Roberto trained this morning, beginning at 11, at the Ciutat Esportiva, before joining their Catalunya teammates.

10 blaugrana players called up to Catalunya squad

This Thursday, Catalunya national team coach Johan Cruyff announced his squad for early January’s match against Nigeria. Ten Barça players have made the squad (the most from any individual club): Valdés, Montoya, Piqué, Puyol, Bartra, Jordi Alba, Busquets, Xavi, Tello, and Sergi Roberto. Cesc will not take part due to his injury. The match will take place at the Cornellà-El Prat stadium on January 2, 2013 at 19:00.

The squad list was presented during an event at the Old Estella Damm factory featuring the president of the Federació Catalana de Futbol (Catalan Federation of Football), Andreu Subies, and coach Johan Cruyff.

Guardiola would be delighted to see Cruyff as Catalan coach

Barcelona legend Johann Cruyff has reportedly been offered the job of coaching the Catalan national team by the Catalan Football Federation. While Cruyff is taking his time to mull over the matter, Catalonia is left in a state of  anticipation. Another Catalan sporting icon, Pep Guardiola, was recently asked about his opinion upon Cruyff, Pep’s coach in his playing days and his mentor to this day, taking on the mantle of the Catalan coach.

Catalan newspaper El Mundo Deportivo reports Guardiola’s ironic response,  “He is not a bad coach”, before going on to elaborate, “If it (his acceptance) is confirmed, I will be happy. It will be very good news.”
