Keeping the youth on a short leash

Keeping the youth on a short leash

Barcelona is reportedly planning on loaning out some of the young stars this summer, such as Gerard Deulofeu, Rafinha and Sergi Roberto. No decisions have been made and no official talks have taken place but rumours are strongly suggesting that at least two of these three will not play in a Barça jersey next season. A loan could be an important boost for these young men’s career and would allow them to develop in a great environment, however, Barcelona must learn from the past and be careful to make sure that these players won’t be let go of for good.

Navigating the Transfer Market Madness: Departures (2)

Navigating the Transfer Market Madness: Departures (2)

Transfer rumors have a polarizing effect, either the start of hope (or dread) or simply a nuisance. As papers worldwide scramble daily to fill the pages, they conclude that in fact 2+2 does equal 5. And yet while some stories are so clearly garbage, people imagine truth anyway. So here’s a summary from totalBarça taking gossip and passing it though a sieve.

Navigating the Transfer Market Madness: Arrivals and Departures is a new weekly series that rounds up the transfer gossip and rumors of all potential (sometimes hopeful) outs (Tuesdays) and ins (Thursdays) at FC Barcelona. Though it’s not of the run of the mill variety. Agree or disagree, that’s what the comment section is for. (Note: all amounts are euros)

How to know if a youth player will go all the way?

How to know if a youth player will go all the way?

I’ve been following youth football at Barça for a while now. And there have been many talents produced, many “safe” stars for the future. However, most of those “safe” future stars, those everyone thought would make it, didn’t. In other words, they didn’t live up to their  potential. Instead, a few of those no one really paid much attention to, did make it.

But how can we really know that a youth player will make it? That he will go all the way to the first team or even become one of the best if not the best in the world one day?  This task might prove impossible. Because the ball is round and everything can happen in football, and everything can happen in life. Even the most talented lad can drop his focus for one reason or another or get injured or take the wrong decision at the wrong time. We simply cannot predict who will make it big.

Bojan’s future in the balance

Bojan’s future in the balance

The future of former FC Barcelona striker Bojan Krkić remains in the balance as Roma head into the final match of the Serie A season with the title already decided. Luis Enrique’s Roma, at one point contenders for a spot in the Champions League have fallen away in recent weeks with a string of poor results that may cost Enrique his job as manager.

Bojan’s initial transfer to Roma was a complicated affair with Barcelona contractually obligated to buy the striker back for the 2014 season. However, despite reports last week that the Italian club wanted to sell the player back to Barcelona immediately, new reports have surfaced to indicate a desire to buy the striker definitively from Barcelona. And although it seems unlikely that Roma will offer the 28 million Euros specified in the contract, the club does seem interested in keeping the player long term.

Bojan sees red in AS Roma defeat

FC Barcelona’s on-loan striker Bojan Krkic was shown a straight red card in today’s Serie A match with Fiorentina for a deliberate handball in the area in the 85th minute of a match that AS Roma were losing 2-0. Luis Enrique’s side were already down to 9 men after the expulsions of Juan and Fernando Gago, and finished the match with only eight players. AS Roma went on to lose by a 3-0 scoreline; the team currently sits in eighth place in the table, 12 points behind leaders Juventus.

Transfer Madness: Did we really just sell Bojan Krkic?

Transfer Madness: Did we really just sell Bojan Krkic?

Much has been made of the transfer of Bojan Krkic to Roma: the emotional press conference, the suggestions that the club has acted mercilessly with a dedicated Masia graduate who simply needed more time to develop, and the equal feelings of relief from those fans who failed to appreciate the contribution that Bojan made to the squad. But amid all the hubbub, one key fact has been overlooked by many: Bojan Krkic has not been sold. More importantly: despite the vague acrimony in his declarations to the media on Friday, there is every likelihood that Bojan will wear the blaugrana colors again.

Barça, unfair to Bojan

Barça, unfair to Bojan

The following is a translation of a piece written by Albert Llimós for Barcelona based newspaper Sport. The original article can be found here.

He does not deserve this. His behavior has been exemplary, with a face of a little boy who has never broken a plate, with his angelic smile, even with a certain naivete in his actions which were the result of his age. Four years in the first team, more than 800 goals in the youth teams, the top scorer in the youth system of Barcelona … he has not done much. Now he trains alone in Bellpuig.

Once placed on the market and with negotiations about his transfer to Rome, Bojan chose not to join the Barcelona team at the Ciutat Esportiva and train alone at pitch in Bellpuig.
