The one and only baby ‘Messi’

The one and only baby ‘Messi’

Among Argentina’s long list of laws, a certain one prohibits parents from using surnames as first names. Nevertheless, that did not stop Hector Varela, an Argentinian man from the southern city of General Roca, to name his son after his football hero, Lionel Messi. Varela asked the authorites for permission to name his son ‘Messi’, and his request was accepted. Many surely hoped they would follow in his same footsteps, but in Messi’s hometown of Rosario, the head of civil registry took it upon himself to remind the citizens that the law still prohibits the use of surnames as first names in order to avoid confusion. Messi Daniel Varela will get to enjoy a unique name.
