Among Argentina’s long list of laws, a certain one prohibits parents from using surnames as first names. Nevertheless, that did not stop Hector Varela, an Argentinian man from the southern city of General Roca, to name his son after his football hero, Lionel Messi. Varela asked the authorites for permission to name his son ‘Messi’, and his request was accepted. Many surely hoped they would follow in his same footsteps, but in Messi’s hometown of Rosario, the head of civil registry took it upon himself to remind the citizens that the law still prohibits the use of surnames as first names in order to avoid confusion. Messi Daniel Varela will get to enjoy a unique name.
September 11 is a very important day in Catalonia. Historically, the date commemorates the defeat of Catalonia during the War of Spanish Succession in 1714. Charles Barkley, former NBA star and member of the American Dream Team that competed in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, was also on the judges panel.
Neymar Jr. and Radamel Falcao both missed out on their national team’s World Cup experience this summer. Neymar got to play before being injured in the quarter final match against Falcao’s Columbia. Falcao did not play in the tournament at all, leaving James Rodríguez to become the star of the Columbian team. Both players made their comeback yesterday in a friendly match in Miami which saw the Brazilians defeat the Columbians 1-0.
According to totalBarça’s polls of this summer’s transfer window, Ivan Rakitić was the player who shined the most amongst the fans, winning in both the “Favourite Purchase” (52%) and “Best Bargain” (66%) categories with more votes than all the other candidates combined, including Luis Suarez.
