Spain beaten by Uruguay in the U-20 World Cup quarterfinals

Spain U-20 team was beaten 1-0 by Uruguay after extra time on Saturday. Uruguay won by a single goal by Felipe Avenatti in the 103rd minute and progressed to the semifinals.

Both teams had chances but Uruguay’s stubborn defence proved too much for Spain who relied heavily on their star forwards Gerard Deulofeu and Jesé Rodríguez. Deulofeu created some chances from the set pieces but as is often the case against teams who defend with numbers, individual qualities have little impact if the system is not there to support them.

Confederations Cup Final Match Review: Brazil 3-0 Spain

Confederations Cup Final Match Review: Brazil 3-0 Spain

Spain walked onto the pitch on Sunday night with a record of 29 matches unbeaten and the status as the best national team in the world. Brazil on the other hand was teetering on the edge of mediocrity before the start of the Confederations Cup. Their record low position in the 22nd spot of the FIFA rankings was met with a lot of skepticism from their own fans. But it all didn’t matter as Brazil executed Scolari’s plan which saw the players gel together and peak in perfect time for the win against Vicente del Bosque’s side.

Brazil stifled but go through to finals

Brazil stifled but go through to finals

Brazil went through to the finals of Confederations Cup, to play against either Spain or Italy who play on Thursday. The match itself was a very tight affair, as Uruguay found the best way to stifle the Brazilians of any meaningful exchange between their defense and attack. In the end, Brazil needed some individuality up front to score the winning goal which leaves Uruguay feeling they are just short of an inspired performance.

In the much awaited match between Italy and Brazil, the crowd was given quite a spectacle. A 4-2 victory for Brazil guaranteed the home nation a spot in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup as the top team in Group A. Going into the match, Scolari’s Brazil side’s passing combinations in the final third continue to improve, meanwhile Prandelli’s Italy was missing Pirlo, Barzagli, and De Rossi for various reasons. Match Preview: FC Barcelona vs Real Valladolid

Match Preview: FC Barcelona vs Real Valladolid

FC Barcelona have been crowned champions of La Liga, so what would motivate them against the Valladolid outfit? For some, the chance to chase Madrid’s 100 points last season is one valid reason although it would be a pity if that means Barcelona will keep under-utilizing their youngsters. With Valladolid already safe from relegation at 43 points, this match will be a platform to prepare the next season for both teams.

Miroslav Đukić’s men has won twice, drew twice, and lost once in their last 5 games. The loss came from a 7-goal-thriller against Real Madrid in Santiago Bernabeu. This shows at their current form, they are certainly no pushover. Playing a starting 4-2-3-1 formation, they like to attack from the middle and never hesitate to shoot from long range if the chance presents itself. Their top scorer and joint top assist maker is their attacking midfielder Óscar who has scored 12 and assisted 7 goals.
