Guardiola: “Betis is an offensive team that scores lots of goals”

FC Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola gave his routine pre-match press conference prior to tomorrow’s King’s Cup game against Real Betis.

Betis has shown that they are an offensive team that scores a lot of goals. Their coach, Pepe Mel, prepares the games very well.  It’s the team that we’re playing.  It’s better to play them than to not play them because that would mean we were no longer in the competition.  They are playing really well and besides the games against Cultural and Ceuta, we haven’t won easily.”

Pep Guardiola started off the pre-match press conference for Wednesday’s match against Real Betis by talking about Monday’s Golden Ball/FIFA World Player of the Year festivities and giving his opinion on the matter.

We are very happy. It’s inevitable. The three of them are very competitive and everyone wanted to win.  It’s normal but they have a great respect for the decision.  They are the three best players in the world this year and the award gives special recognition to Barca’s youth system as well as Spanish Football.  It’s a great prize for FCB and we can’t forget that.  I’m more than satisfied with what they have accomplished.”

Guardiola: “I want to congratulate all of the youngsters”

In the post match press conference Pep Guardiola spoke well of the youngsters that took part in the 2-0 victory over Rubin Kazan.

We weren’t sure whether or not they would try to classify for the Round of 16.  It was a difficult game because they defend very well.  It’s always tough when a team defends with five or six players and decides that they won’t let you score a single goal.  I guess they realized that they didn’t have much of a chance to progress.Continue reading »

Cruyff’s Corner: A valuable win at Pamplona

Cruyff’s Corner: A valuable win at Pamplona

The following is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in El Periodico.  The original can be found here.

The exceptionality of what happened on Saturday turned Guardiola into everyone’s punching bag.

Normality was restored on Saturday once the game started but only lasted 90 minutes. Afterwards, Guardiola went back to defending the club as he had done all day.

Early in the afternoon, everyone started to speak poorly of Guardiola as if he was the guilty one when all he did was wait to get the instructions from the club. The team arrived in Pamplona and everyone was still blaming Pep. The game ended and the bashing continued. In the end, Guardiola not only acted as the coach but also as the club’s official spokesman. The bashing didn’t stop there.

Cruyff’s Corner: Afellay has everything necessary to triumph

Cruyff’s Corner: Afellay has everything necessary to triumph

This is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in El Periodico.  The original can be found here.

I was in the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday watching the Ajax vs PSV game.  It was a high tension game in which Ajax couldn’t lose and they didn’t.  They maintained the six point advantage that PSV holds over them.

Afellay will play for Barca starting on January 1.  He has enough quality to play on Guardiola’s team.  I’m not discovering a new player.  He can play in various offensive positions.  One thing that I can add is how his behavior is exemplary off the field.  He’s a very well rounded kid.  Is that important?  Of course.

Cruyff’s Corner: Benzema and Canales – The same error

The following is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in El Periodico.  The original can be found here.

Last week’s King’s Cup fixtures showed the philosophy and necessities of both of the big teams.  Barca fielded a team of youngsters that don’t often play first team football and Madrid went with many of their big guns in Murcia.  These coach’s decisions, while distinct from one another, were logical.
