Round five of La Liga sees Spain’s first marquee matchup of the season as Barcelona ties Atlético one apiece. The encounter was a defensive one with Ivan Rakitić giving the blaugrana a lead just before the break with a header. Ángel Correa tied the match after a nice dribble and a Javier Mascherano slip.
Marc-André ter Stegen – 7.0
Marc made three great stops in 16th, 46th, and 88th minutes. His distribution was on point throughout the match, and he always looked to relieve pressure and start early offense. No blame can be given to him on the Atlético goal, and he stopped every other attempt on target.
Jordi Alba – 6.5
Jordi ran the left wing and overlapped with Neymar well. He looks much more comfortable in a 4-3-3. Atlético didn’t start much offense on his side of the pitch, and he won the corner that led to the Rakitić goal.
Javier Mascherano – 5.5
He looked like a different player in left center back role. He was very strong in his passing game and made a great last ditch tackle in the 18th minute. If you take away the 62nd minute, he had a great match, but unfortunately Javier got murdered on the Correa goal. Javier is making a habit of slipping at the wrong moments.
Gerard Piqué – 6.0
Gerard started the match strong. As always his passing started much of Barcelona’s early offense. Torres nutmegged Piqué on his dribble to goal, although Gerard redeemed himself with two devastating tackles in the 72nd.
Sergi Roberto – 6.5
The first half was stronger than the second for Sergi. He made a great tackle in the 20th and had Dani Alves like interplay with Lionel Messi in the 25th and 40th minutes. Roberto has made the right back position his own this early season.
Andrés Iniesta – 7.5
Andrés drifted through the match like a maestro conducting a symphony. He made a strong dribble in the 35th and a strong tackle in the 39th. There was more bite to his game than usual on the night. Andrés created the goal with a great cross after a short corner.
Sergio Busquets – 6.0
Barcelona looks like a different team when Sergio is dictating play. He is at the center of everything good for the club with his rhythmic passing. Unfortunately he was withdrawn in the 52nd with a knock.
Ivan Rakitić – 7.5
As with most players for the club Ivan started the match very well. It is almost unfair to have players like him with such a high work rate. His header was the only goal of the match for Barcelona. In the 79th his pass to Neymar almost won the match. If the club wins the league this season, this header and his other against Athletic Bilbao will be two of the main reasons.
Neymar – 7.0
He had three strong shots on goal in the 36th, 65th, and 79th. Neymar won two yellows in the 54th and 82nd. He played well on the dribble and looked to be the player that would break the deadlock.
Luis Suárez – 6.0
Not the greatest match for the greatest number nine in the game. He had strong work rate, but his pass accuracy was low. Luis gave away the ball way too often while trying to hold up play. Suárez gave up a silly yellow in the 84th minute by trying to force play.
Lionel Messi – 6.0
The great one had an awesome shot in the 19th and a strong dribble in the 27th. Unfortunately, Lionel aggravated his groin injury and was withdrawn in the 59th. Messi looks to be sidelined for three weeks with the strain.
André Gomes – 6.0
Replaced Sergio and had a tidy 38 minutes. André didn’t make any mistakes but contributed very little positive as well.
Arda Turan – 6.0
Arda had the impossible task of replacing the irreplaceable Messi. Turan made a few strong dribbles on the wing and cut inside on occasion but was overall ineffective.
Iniesta bossed the match for Barcelona and Rakitić scored a header. Neymar also played well, but S and M came up missing. Who were your favorites?
