Barça B made its intentions clear from the very first whistle, trying to launch an attack with the first touches of the game.
This set the tone for an entertaining match (when has Barça B not been entertaining this season?!) which showed the best and worst of the home side across the 90 minutes.
Xerez came into the game on a poor run of form and allowed Barça to dominate the early stages. The blaugrana passing was swift, accurate, and incisive and the visitors had made no imprint on the game by the time of the first goal.
Deulofeu, who else, opened the scoring on 19 minutes. A ‘Messi-esque’ run into the penalty area eventually saw him surrounded by four defenders, yet he still managed to place his shot beyond the keeper and in off the post. 1-0 Barca, Golazo Deulofeu.
Just a few minutes later the same player hit the post again and then it was team-mate Araujo’s turn to rattle the woodwork, the ball hitting the post after a wonderful full length fingertip save from keeper Raul.
The visitors started to make a game of it after going behind, but it took until the 40th minute before they had, and wasted, their best chance of the half, with Rueda unable to reach a cross which would surely have seen the visitors level had he done so.
The home side took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break but as has happened so often with Eusebio’s young side, they were unable to hold onto it for long.
Lucas Porcar’s half volley on 53 minutes got Xerez back into the match and the same player put the away side 2-1 up on 65.
To their credit, Barça’s players dug deep and two goals in 2 minutes saw them re-take the lead. The hard working Sergio Araujo was instrumental in both goals, setting up Espinosa to fire home on 69 and playing a short pass to Luis Alberto which ended with the striker finding the back of the net with his 14th of a prolific season.
As we approached the end of the game, Xerez twice went close but Barça substitute Joan Roman sealed all 3 points in injury time with a fine finish. Final score 4-2.
