BREAKING: Cuenca loaned out to Ajax for remainder of season

FC Barcelona forward Isaac Cuenca (21) completed a loan move to Ajax on Thursday that will see the La Masia youth at the Dutch club until June 30. The left winger had only recently received his medical clearance after an injury that saw him sidelined for eight months.

Jordi Roura helped to inform Tito Vilanova, who remains in New York City, throughout the operation on the final day of the January transfer window, which was primarily carried out through FC Barcelona Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta, Director of Football Raúl Sanllehí, and Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars, who wore the blaugrana colors from 2000-2004.

Jordi Roura: “We will play like we always have”

Tito Vilanova’s assistant manager, Jordi Roura, speaking at press conference after 1st leg of Copa del Rey semi final game against Real Madrid, admitted that Barça lacked effectiveness at Santiago Bernabeu and said that the 1-1 draw “comes up a bit short”. Despite not winning,  Roura underlined that he was very pleased with the performance of his players: “We played a very good match. Piqué was exceptional. We only failed to increase our lead.”  Real Madrid even when missing key players on defence and no Casillas in goal, presented a great challenge: “I said that they have a great squad and those who played have shown why they are in Madrid” said Roura and added that “we were expecting that kind of pressure from Madrid, in fact we were expecting it to be a bit more intense at the start of the game. They waited for us in our own half because they are a physical and strong team and it’s always difficult to hold onto the ball, especially at the start,” and added that “in general we were the superior side.”

Tactical Review: Real Varane 1-1 FC Barcelona

Three clear storylines have emerged in the aftermath of the most recent Clásico:

  •  RAPHAËL VARANE!
  • Wasteful Barça
  • A surprisingly end-to-end affair replete with heroic defending

There is a fourth, perhaps limited by its tactical scope, but it deserves mentioning: Real Madrid employing a 4-2-4.

Copa del Rey Semi Final Match Preview: Real Madrid CF vs FC Barcelona

Copa del Rey Semi Final Match Preview: Real Madrid CF vs FC Barcelona

When Queen Maria I of Portugal first came to power in 1777, her first act resulted in the dismissal of the Secretary of State. Within a decade and a half, she was unfit to rule and “Maria the Mad,” as she had become known in Brazil, was declared mentally insane. Francis Willis, the English physician who treated King George III after he lost the American colonies, wanted to bring Maria to England in the interest of her health and well-being, but was ultimately blocked to keep her on the Iberian Peninsula. The ill-fated ruler spent the remainder of her life in perpetual unhappiness, her wails and screams echoing throughout the corridors of the handful of esteemed palaces she would occupy until her death.

Andrés Iniesta: Stories from his life

Andrés Iniesta: Stories from his life

Andrés Iniesta is not only one of the world’s best football players, finishing third in the most recent Ballon d’Or voting, he is also one of the most beloved footballers around the world. In fact, he is the only Barça player it is socially acceptable for a Madrid or Espanyol fan to like. But what makes him so popular?  Why is Iniesta special in this way? To understand better what kind of a footballer and a person Andrés Iniesta is, here are a few anecdotes about his past that have undoubtedly shaped his present character.

Iniesta’s start at FC Barcelona was a tenuous one. The midfielder even later described his first months at La Masia as “hell”. Jorge Troiteiro, a footballer who shared a bunk-bed with the then 12-year-old Andrés, remembers that time well: “Most of the days he cried a bit, because he was away from his family. So, I joked to cheer him up. But the greatest thing for us was to see the Camp Nou from our window and we used to dream that one day we too would succeed there.” Success, however, would come earlier than Iniesta dreamed…

Barça B: Reactions from the Miniestadi

Barça B beat Real Madrid Castilla 3-1 in the mini-Clásico at a sold out Miniestadi. After the game the two goalscorers, Gerard Deulofeu and Sergio Araujo, talked about the game to the media.

Deulofeu commented that although it was a Clásico, the team wasn’t beset by nerves: “It was a normal game. We knew it was a classic, but we weren’t nervous.” He agreed that the sending off of Álex changed the game: “They played their defence quite high in the first half which prevented us from taking the ball with ease, but then came the red card and everything was a bit easier.”
