They caught my eye and never released it! Part 2: Tello

They caught my eye and never released it! Part 2: Tello

You may have never seen them before, but when they touch the ball they catch your eye within an instant. Then they never give it back. There are two players that have done that to me, one in 2008 and the other in 2011, both in youth national team tournaments. They are two very different players, but they have some common factors. They were both born in 1991, they were raised at La Masia and they both have names that start with the letter T. Over two posts I will try to explain how Thiago Alcántara and Cristian Tello put me under their spell and how sure I am that these two won’t disappoint in the near and distant future. In part two we’ll focus on Cristian Tello. Part 1 about Thiago can be found here.

Cristian Tello

The first time I saw Tello live

Not too long ago I had another moment, much like the one I had with Thiago while watching the U-17 European Championship in 2008. It was the U-20 World Cup in 2011 and this time the player that caught my eye was a winger. He wasn’t as outstanding as Thiago had been for me in 2008, but there were something special about him every time he got the ball. I didn’t have to look up his name as the commentator was as vocal as me every time this winger got the ball, announcing “Tello, Tello, Tello”. And although I had far better knowledge of Barça’s youngsters by this point, Tello was someone I hadn’t heard enough about to remember.

What team is this kid from?“, I recall thinking as I watched the game. He owned his flank and when he got the ball, he moved it quickly, and you wouldn’t envy those with the job of trying to stop him. I wasn’t able to watch many of the games from the tournament. But from the few I watched, what I remember most is Tello. But who was he, who was that fast technical player? Once again the UEFA website gave an answer that filled me with joy, Cristian Tello was a player from FC Barcelona. I recalled hearing his name before, but not much more than that.

Tello is in many many ways a different player from Thiago, but he did catch my eye in the same way as his peer had done some years earlier. During this season I have watched the B team whenever I’ve had the time and a good steam. Sadly it hasn’t been as many times as I would have liked. But Cristian Tello has impressed me, just as Thiago had and still does. Tello has been better and better in every game.

A while back I wrote an article about the Generation of 1991, the new magical generation that Barça has produced. This group includes both Tello and Thiago, together with players like Cuenca, Planas, Riverola, Bartra, and Montoya who have played together since they were 10-14 years old. When it came to Tello, unlike many of the others, I didn’t write down the date of his first team debut. The reason, he hadn’t made his debut yet. That was three months ago. In November, the first leg of the Copa del Rey fixture against L’Hospitalet took place. Cristian Tello made his debut, playing the full 90 minutes, and he didn’t disappoint. In December, it was time for the second leg and Guardiola put Tello in the squad again, and even though he would start this match on the bench, he would impress even more.

In the 39th minute Tello entered the pitch. Only three minutes later, in the 42nd minute, he scored a cracker of a goal. As he got the ball at the half line, Tello advanced towards the goal and scored. He did it with such ease that it was hard to remember that this was his first ever game at Camp Nou. And more was to come as in the 62nd minute he scored an even more impressive goal. Once again he looked like a veteran goalscorer on the pitch, as he curled the ball past the defender and the goalkeeper like it was nothing. In the 79th minute, Tello rounded off the night by assisting Isaac Cuenca for the 9th goal of the evening. I literally sat with an open mouth, I had just witnessed a 20 year old kid in his Camp Nou debut not only scoring two cracking goals and making a fabulous assist, but also ruling the entire show in a game that ended in a 9-0 win.

Against Hospitalet

The more I watched him, the more he grew on me, becoming more and more a huge personal favourite among the B team players. The flow in his game, the speed, the technique, the will. In December of 2011, I went to the Miniestadi to watch Barça B play Almeria. It wasn’t the first time I had seen Tello play live, I actually got to see him for a few minutes in the second half of the game against Albacete where I met Thiago in the stands. But it was in this game against Almeria that I got to see Tello take over. There were no question about it, the boy with the number 7 was the best one on the field. He seemed unstoppable. I recall Tello dribbling past Henok Goitom, among others, on his way towards the goal. The Swede looked dejected, he couldn’t cope with this young kid. Afterwards, when I talked with Henok in the mixed zone, he said that the Barça kids wouldn’t stop running and the most annoying part was that they were so good with the ball and always wanted it. His words could have easily described Cristian Tello alone. The game ended in a 3-3 draw, with Tello being behind each of Barça’s goals. Three great solo runs that ended with shots on goal. Two were saved by the keeper but kicked in by Soriano and Riverola on the rebounds, while one went straight in. That cold evening at the Miniestadi, Cristian Tello ruled the pitch, and it’s something I will never forget.

Ever since that game against L’Hospitalet at Camp Nou and the one against Almeria at the Miniestadi, I’ve been literally screaming for Guardiola to give Tello not only his League debut but also the full 90 minutes on the pitch. Finally, against Villarreal last weekend, his League debut arrived. With 20 minutes left of the game Cristian Tello entered the pitch, seconds later the clearest chances of the whole games occurred, thanks to the young winger. The Villarreal players couldn’t cope with him and instead they would grab his shirt and throw the boy aside in their attempts to get the ball. There was also this one brilliant move down the left flank where he ended up providing Cesc Fàbregas with the game’s clearest chance. All created by the debutante. With some of the best players in the world on the pitch, Tello, who only played 20 minutes, was named by our readers here at totalBarça as Man of the Match.

The following game against Valencia, there were nothing I wanted more than for Tello to start. In the end he only got 3 minutes. Too little time to create danger? No, not for Tello, as he directly went down his flank to make the Valencia defenders dizzy, with the ball finally going out for a corner. A corner that nearly ended up in the goal through Leo, but the Argentinian failed to find the net.

And finally, last Saturday in the game against Real Sociedad in La Liga, he was in the starting eleven. It was time to see what he could do against a La Liga opponent during 90 minutes. After 8 minutes, it was already clear. Tello gave the first team something they had been missing during the last few games, someone who clearly sees the goal and doesn’t miss. 1-0. As the game continued, there was one thing that never changed: when no. 37 on the flank got the ball, danger occurred. In the second half he would score once more, but contact on the goal line from an offside Dani Alvés denied the goal. But it didn’t bother Tello and he just kept on until the end of the game, which eventually finished in a 2-1 win. Once again you, our readers, voted Cristian Tello as Man of the Match.

Against Real Sociedad

And if we don’t count the Valencia game where he only played 3 minutes, Cristian Tello has now featured in 4 first team games, scored 3 allowed goals, had 1 disallowed, and made one assist. And 3 months ago he hadn’t even made his debut!

Thiago and Tello both caught my eye once and they haven’t released it since.

  1. @Catalan_4 says:

He's a lot like Villa but a lot faster and his finishing is a lot like Henry's. The type of finishing that makes you feel how simple it is to put the ball in the net and be amazed at others who struggle with it.

    • Migo says:

no not at all like henry. henrys trademark shot was the curved shot to the 2nd post

    • Matty says:

I feel as he will be a great replacement for when Villa retires for our team, hes still young and could use some more first team minutes. But the way he moves, his dribbles, and his scoring remind me so much of Villa of the past few years especially his Valencia years. I'd give him another year or two before we sign him to the first team as a back up to Villa who will be pushing 33 by then. thoughts?

  2. @rohitv16 says:

This kid is really really quick! Great to see such youngsters coming through..!!

  3. TUQINATOR says:

GENERATION 91….They will be Barca future…good luck guys:D and GREAT article

  4. FAME says:

To me his better than cuenca or anyother youngsters beside Thiago goal vs Munich i would never forget that and under 21 final goal he scored that kid woooooooow me… but tello is going be David villa like player he stay humble

    • sdad says:

Tello is actually quite different from Villa, who is a natural center forward with exceptional skills. Tello is lightning fast, fancy skills (which he hasnt dared to showcase when playing in the first team) and hunger for goal. He will grow up to be a little bit messi, henry, ribery, Cronaldo esque.

  5. VEB says:

Great Article! This kid is a bullet, I remember an instance against Real Sociedad where he cut outside and I thought the ball was going out for a goal kick but he some how managed to keep it in, I thought he teleported, he was that fast.

I would love to see the top speed of this boy, he is the fastest player I have ever seen, apart from Walcott I can't think of anybody who would come close.

  6. felix durumbah says:

as of 62nd minute, Bilbao were leading Mirandes 3-0. Methinks Bilbao will meet Barca in the final.

  7. naku says:

Aside from commenting on the actual content of these articles you've written I just want to say; props to you Alexandra for writing these quality articles! In my opinion you show a lot of devotion to your passion and I think you deserve credit for that. Keep it up!

  8. RICHIE says:

other of the generation of 91 is Oriol Romeu

but other of the best generation since 1987 is the generation of 1995- Samper Grimaldo Sandro Dongou Balleste……REMEMBER THIS NAMES…….and also Bellerin and Toral but they are now in Arsenal

  9. kariz says:

A very good article, thanks for sharing it with us.
A few season back, i mentioned that Bojan was blocking the develpment of the new generation and everyone was attacking from every side that Bojan is the future and he will do that and this….
Now we can see that Bojan was actually blocking the development of the new generation and he was nothing in comparison to Cuenca and Tello and others…

  10. minges86 says:

i really want to see more of this kid.. i think its too early to consider him as a genuine "first team" player just YET tho…

i mean, he has a great touch and amazing speed and composure… but i think Pep knows he still has alot of work to do… mayb its just because it is at a different level and not as confident just yet, but he still only seems to be very dangerous when he takes the player on for speed down the outside of the flank and cuts the ball or crosses it…. now im not saying thats a bad thing at all…. but to be a true first team player he needs to add more strings to his bow because teams will figure him out n frustrate him.
Maybe he has the ability to come onto his right foot more, or track back and defend more, but it seems they arent as prominent in his game YET (that being said, i havent seen alot of b-team games, so maybe he has these moves but still getting confident enough to try them with the first team)…. hes a great talent, and i cant wait to see him develop more, because someone with that kind of speed and composure and game sense are all great assets to have as a player.

i hope he isnt rushed… because this is definately another gem out of the quarry!

  11. nadir says:

Tello is the kind of player we need. Superfast, technical pure winger that brings something different to our game, starting or coming on as supersub. With a better first-touch and more experience, this kid will become huge.

Why spend 50 millions on Bale when we have this gem? GO TELLO!!

    • nadir says:

He actually reminds of Henry, and that is a GOOD thing!

      • Write_theFuture says:

I think the player he reminds me most of is a mini Ribery. I just love how hungry and fast and aggressive he is during games, especially when we are down or tied.

    • Nenolosos says:

with one good game not compare tello with bale please, bale speed is like a ''ferrari-shumaher'' maybe the best speed player in the world together with cronaldo,
and bale has only 22 years old and he has more more experience in all competitions than tello and don't forget one thing bale is the best player and most important player in totenham hocpur and tello in barca it's simply free player from pressure because barca have more exellente player.

  12. Cule_999 says:

With all due respect , how can we make a rational comparison between David Villa in his prime and Tello?

How many games of Tello have we seen for Barca ? And I am not talking about watching him play in the Segunda B .

How can people criticize Villa — by saying he is not as fast and is not as efficient a finisher as Titi was, and Tello is…

Although Tello is showing great promise for the future of Barca , let's not be quick to cheer him on and put down Villa's abilities and contributions for both Barca and Spain.

Villa's record speaks for itself……… Anims El Guaje.

  13. winlecule says:

there is a particular players who courts my attention,n its Giovanni Dos Santos.he is a beautifu player who i believe is growin at a steady pace n i believe he will take the world by storm.I especially love the fact that he in nt under d spotlight n dat gives him d breathing space to get better n grow tougher.he hardly talks but i see a future xavi in him as he doesnt play to win d crowd or get recognision.Barcelona is a philosophy.I love this club.*

    • Deev8 says:

did you mean jonathan? you made a comparison to xavi not sure if you meant jonathan or gio, since Gio is a winger/attacker.

    • minges86 says:

u mean jonathan dos santos? Gio is the older brother of jonathan, barca sold Gio to tottenham a few years back.. many people called him the next Ronaldinho, but he never took the next step and currently barely plays in the epl.. Jonathan is still with us and has played a bit recently..

maybe you got confused because in some languages, Johnathan is the english translation of Giovanni…. but in this case its two different brothers :D

  14. Haneen says:

Thank you Alexandra, great artickle, for both boys caught my eye too & probably will never cut me loose again!
Tello is a magical player, and he actually reminds me of Pedro. But he is one of his kind. I feel amazingly safe when he plays, Lamacia provides the team with such fab players in hard times such as these. Such a great generation to come, how i love you Barca.

  15. FCBarca says:

I have been screaming for the same thing, more Tello!…great read once again

  16. alucard41 says:

a mix of villa and van persie!!! he needs to play consistently.

  17. @Tihana27 says:

He's really great!! I like watching him playing.. he's that "new blood" that Barca needs right now!!
and thanks God, we have these youngers!!!

  18. alex says:

Tello is one hell of a player, Amazing speed composure on and off d ball movement, very unselfish, and always has an eye for goal, the future is so bright for barca
    Go Barca!!

  19. Cool as a Cule says:

I remember, in the game vs Hospitalet he scored goals with both feet, that ain’t bad at all! boy has a bright future!

  20. Ciumo says:

Tello made much bigger impression on me than Cuenca did. He shows, that with a lot of work, will and some kind of self confidence, there is possibility to make as good impression on Barca fans, as he did. He plays just like the "veterans" in the first team, he has no fear in 1on1 situations, also, he can pass three players with speed and ease. And he has such a great finish ! Against Hospitalet and even against Sociedad he scored such a wonderful goals ! I hope, that he will get more and more occasions to play for the first team, and that he will give us even more happiness !

  21. messi says:

yes he is a bit like villa he has big talent i dont know how big he is and how much he weights but i hope he will get stronger cause if not its difficult to be a sucsesful player in the highest level i hope it doesnt end like bojan i hope he gets stronger physicallt he has big potential tahts for sure

  22. enezx says:

yeah i hear that he hasnt got a left foot. IF it is he gotta work on it if he needs to be a great winger
nevertheless i’m wondering about our lineup in few years – should be legendary

  23. Logaa"21"enrique says:

I still insist this guy should be unleashed in the last 25-30 mins in games when defenders of our opponents are getting tired. He will skin them in the 60 mins upwards.

  24. bresh says:

    AlexandraJonson excellent article :* :D

  25. CristianTello says:

    Great article about me! :D
To be frank, Tello is the most talented player I have seen since Messi. I hope he will become a great player.

    • kokobarca says:

Now that's an overreaction. Don't get me wrong Tello is a talented guy but the most talented since Messi? Hell no

  26. CristianTello says:

    Right, maybe I am a bit lopsided…
But you couldn't say that he isn't one of the most talented players since Messi!
