Grimaldo: The left back of the future
A recent addition to Catalan paper Mundo Deportivo has been a series of youth profiles written by Oriol Domènech. In early December, his profile of Sergi Samper appeared here on totalBarça. Now it’s the turn of Juvenil A left back Alejandro Grimaldo (16), one of La Masia’s promising players who is currently speeding through the youth ranks, having debuted for the first team and Barça B this season. The original article can be found here.
Alejandro Grimaldo (Valencia, born on September 20, 1995) is the third youngest player to debut with the first team in the history of FC Barcelona. This past 9th of August he made his first appearance, in the final of the Copa Catalunya against Espanyol that was played at the Nou Estadi of Tarragona, at 15 years, 10 months, and 20 days. He passed Leo Messi and Bojan Krkic and only remains behind the legendary Paulino Alcántara, who also made his debut in the Campeonato de Catalunya at 15 years, 4 months and 18 days, scoring a ‘hat trick’ against Català, and Haruna Babangida, who at 15 years, 9 months, and 11 days played in a pre-season friendly against the modest Dutch side AGOVV.
Grimaldo is a bullet. On the pitch and in life. Because 26 days after that unforgettable day, he also debuted in the Segunda División, away at Cartagena, where he put on an exhibition along with another promising youngster, Rafinha, leading to a convincing win by the reserves (0-4). As a left back, his current position, he played some extraordinary minutes in the second half, overflowing with speed and skill. After suffering a violent tackle by Josemi, a former Liverpool player, who is more than twice his age (31 years old), and who was sent off for his anti-sporting action, Grimaldo initiated the play for the 0-3 of Rafinha with two spectacular sidesteps.
Although many saw him continuing with the reserves, he returned to Juvenil A, his team this season although it’s his first year, the same with Dongou, Samper, Bagnack, and Sandro, all of them from the sensational generation of 1995, that also includes Toral and Bellerin, who in the summer signed for Arsenal, and Pol Garcia, who went to Juventus. A generation that this past season won absolutely everything, the Nike Premier Cup in Manchester, the Liga and Campeonato de Catalunya, and the prestigious MIC.
Grimaldo’s story at Barça began in 2008, when Albert Benaiges discovered him playing in the Valencia shirt, where he started as a player in the year 2000. Not as a wing back, but as a ‘mediapunta’, a ‘10’. Benaiges convinced his family and Alex entered Barça’s La Masia, as his parents took up residence in Barcelona. He began in the Infantil A of Andrés Carrasco, afterwards passing through the Cadetes, A (with García Pimienta) and B (Víctor Sánchez), and this year is part of Juvenil A without having gone through Juvenil B. His stand out qualities include his verticality, his ability of getting forward to the end line, with dodges or one-twos, and his good crosses, but in defense he still has some shortcomings that minimize his power and speed. With Òscar Garcia, he is in good hands.

he has a lot to learn… but got talent
his hair flops like puyol's when he runs, he is fast like dani alves, reminds me a bit of iniesta when he dribbles, has loads of talent. Overall, I like this kid, lets hope he can be something big!

his tackle good, he must teach alves dis
Interesting, I didn't know there were so many great players from 1995 generation. Where can I read up on more about them?
Generation of '95…I get a tad bit sad when I look at what all these guys my age are doing compared to what I've done with my life -_-
And then I look at messi, who's my age……
….god that's demoralising haha
Hahaha dude, I'm sorry. Doesn't it suck to be in the age range of amazing players? Like freakin Thiago is only 4 years older than me :'(
we're on the same page man….i always wished i could play for barca
but atleast we can say we looked at the greatest team in the world right?
Hahah yea dude, no doubt about that.
Hahaha I totally hear you bro… I'm from that generation too, to think other guys like him are already debuting for the best football team in the world (maybe ever) and I am sitting here at home reading articles about him. XD. Its ok though, I have learned not to try to compare myself with the standards of Barca players, they are just superheroes.
same here man, i feel like i've done absolutely nothing in my life. i'm the same age as them (Generation of '95 ) but i'm sitting here on my ass and watching vids of them and admiring them. wtf have i done with my life.
Good to read u again, dude. Where have u been all these while?
you guys need to understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to make to highest level, so don't be ashamed of yourself after all only the extremely talented ones will be good enough to go all the way to the top.
thanks for the concern man. i was away on a vacation in a remote place in bangladesh for a few days. i was able to access the internet and read the totalbarca news but the internet connection was too slow for me to comment.
and you need to keep in mind that their career is very short. it starts early and it ends early as well. so no need to be upset about your achievements compared to them. on the other hand they can be great inspiration for us all in our life because of their hard work, professionality, camaraderie
can't wait to see the generation 1995 start appearing in the first team!
he looks like david silva. also a left-footed winger, hope he becomes much better than jordi alba and close to david silva at 22.
He looks very promising, great going forward and very good positioning in defence
The future is indeed bright.
In fact, if it was any brighter we would all be blind.
I'm so excited for him and Dongou
He looks really good despite his young age !
OMG! It's Grimaldo! I've been talking about him all the time! TB finally made an article about him! He is amazing! I'm sure he will develop into something especially when he is in one of the best youth training systems!
Middle finger to Arsene for tapping up kids Jon Toral and Victor Hellerin!!! :@:@
Hector Bellerin*
And middle finger to them for leaving.
I see another player getting overhyped by the people here at totalBarca. Go watch more football guys! or better still go play football yourself to get a better idea of how to differentiate the good and the average ones!
Deulofeu? Grimaldo? Who's next? LOL…
Why is he overhyped? Because people recognise his extraordinary TALENT?
Nobody in their right mind will say "he's ready, promote him!" but he IS one of the players that we should look at. They need to learn to live with the pressure- we want Thiagos being promoted to our team, not Giovannis.
Yes, people often say "the player is overhyped and than it's disappointment". Hell, that means that he wasn't cut out to be a Barcelona player. What, there are no expectations and no pressure in the first team? A young player have to learn to live with this. The sooner the better. Mentality is almost as importnant in football as sheer talent.
That's exactly why Thiago seems to be a huge success and why Bojan is in Roma. Because mentally Bojan is still a kid.
I think you're right in general. Especially compared to barcacule's comment. But I disagree with you about that:
"Yes, people often say "the player is overhyped and than it's disappointment". Hell, that means that he wasn't cut out to be a Barcelona player."
I think sometimes young players could be good enough to evolve into the first team someday but fail to do so because they are overhyped at youth level. Yes, when you're in the first team, there is a lot of pressure and hype too and you have to cope with it, but it makes a great difference if you experience that sort of pressure and hype when you're 16 or when you're 22.
Basically, what I'm saying is: Yes, you have to be mentally tough to be a Barcelona player, but it is of great importance that you are, to a certain degree, spared from this pressure when you're still a youth player because at that age it is totally normal to lack that mental toughness.
Yes and no.
I mean. I agree with you to some extent. A t the very young age the player should be left alone and maybe that should apply to Grimaldo. It is different to take the pressure when you are 15 than it is when you are 25. BUT- imagine a player that is capable of taking this pressure when he is 15 or 17 or whatever- and has talent.
He is going to be a star. A megastar. And… you kind of need to be if you want to play in Barcelona's first team, don't you?
You're right, it's not as black and white. Nonetheless I think that even though you should be spared ost of this pressure at young age- IMO you should be slowly introduced to it. Just like you are being introduced to the first team. A training session here, a training session there, a friendly, a debut in la Liga and so on. Pep does it brilliantly Another thing which I think he does briolliantly- better than Rijkaard- is recognising when a player is ready mentally. IMO both Bojan and Giovanni were promoted too early and the pressure was too high. That's why I'm not talking about players being promoted at age 15 or 17, none of that. But some noise around them… it's like that training session with a first team when you are still in Juvenil
SOME- of course not "another Messi!" crap after a player kicked the ball straight three times
Yeah Barcamule its crazy the way we overhype the youth at Barca isnt it… i can remember people making a big deal of the likes of Valdes, Xavi, Fabregas, Iniesta, Pique, Puyol, Busquets, Pedro, Thiago and eh Lionel Messi and where are they now !!!!! Its not as La Masia has a decent reputation for producing players or anything….. I mean just look at how players like Romeu, Arteta, Reina, Bojan, Motto, Alverez etc have struggled to find clubs .. !!!! It must get lonely up there on that self appointed pedestal of yours looking down on all us normal football fans
;):p

a catalan(jordi alba) plays for valencia.
A valencian(grimaldo)will play for barca.
Dude he is Argentine not Spanish(or Valencian as you put it)
no, it's true.
he is valencian.
OUR GARETH BALE
OMG ! I am 15 too , but not in this level :p
I saw that Cartagena match, Grimaldo was immense, a true indication to me was he was goign great at the end of the match as well, indicating the guy has the lungs to stay in the game for a Barca fullback.
If everything goes all right, he is a legend in the making and this isn't me hyping things, its the way he IS.
he dribble like messi, also very fast. but he hasn't tested yet defensively
very hyperactive kid, barca will polish this kid and bammm!!!
