On being a fan

On being a fan

When I first discovered my love for the beautiful game, there was one overwhelming reason why I knew that this would be a life-long passion: connection.

This is probably something that I do not need to elaborate much on to anybody who is reading this. Anyone who reads totalBarça knows the community we have created here – knows that fans from all around the world come here to celebrate (and commiserate) about their favorite team, FC Barcelona.

I continue to be amazed every time I write for this website by the millions of people from all different backgrounds and circumstances that read my articles, that feel the same way I do about a club halfway across the world from them. This connection with people, regardless of where they are from or what they believe in, is what makes this sport different from all the rest.

However, recently, I’ve begun to stumble on my resolve. My questioning has come from not only the angry comments left on this website while the team struggles to meet our high expectations, but also with tragedies like the stadium disaster in Egypt.

What does it really mean to be a fan?

Some may say that being a fan means purchasing the most official team merchandise. Being a season ticket holder and attending every game in person. Having the most knowledge about the history and the statistics of the club and being able to ramble about the choice starting eleven from the year 1963, just in case someone may ask.

Looking at this website, though, I would say that very few of us fit any of those categories. I certainly know that I do not. Does that mean we aren’t fans?

“Of course not!” I’m sure is what some of you are lamenting to your computer screens right now. Yes, you’re right. Money, location, knowledge, power… none of those should factor into who is a better fan than another.

But then, why do we keep playing them against one another?

I have noticed this behavior in our comments section. I appreciate all of the readers on this website, but when I read some just plain mean comments aimed at writers or fellow readers, it makes me rethink if this is really the community I thought it was.

Making fun of people because you don’t agree with their lineup decision, because they don’t write English very well, is unfair. Even worse is to call people names, the worst of which being that they are not as “hardcore” of a fan as you.

There is no hierarchy in fandom. We are all equal because we all share a love for the same blaugrana colors. The only measurement is passion, and that is something we all exude.

Comments are for speaking your mind, for expressing your opinion without fear of antagonism.  We at totalBarça refuse to remove our comments section because that would effectively end our community. However, we are asking that you all think before you type and make the comments section welcoming to everyone once again.

I know that this sport has a history of violent rivalries, one of which this club is involved in. Fans fight with other clubs, they fight within their clubs. Sometimes, as in the case with Egypt, they fight for political reasons that may have very little to do with the actual game. This is all to be expected from the one truly global sport. Its politicization is an unfortunate consequence.

My reason for writing this rather deep article is to ask that we, as culés, rise above this. We support the best team in the world, which means we should be the best fans in the world. That means respect – toward the team, toward opponents, toward each other.

Whether you call it football, fútbol, soccer, calcio, or any other derivative, it is all the same. Whether you attend every game or watch pixelated live streams on your laptop. Whether you know what team we are playing next week or not. Whether you own every player’s jersey or none at all.

All that matters is that you love the same thing I love. That you identify with me, in some small way, is enough for me to feel connected to you. Barcelona is our connection.

In the end, we may all be just fans, but we are also a global community. Do not ever forget that.

      • bob says:

Leverkusen just lost 1-0 today in Dortmund and are still 6th in the league (equal points with 7th Hannover), behind Dortmund, Bayern, Schalke, Gladbach and Bremen.

I couldn't agree more. As a fan new to this site, I find it upsetting that at least a few vocal members use this as a forum to put other people down under the guise of supporting Barca.

Also, you didn't say it, so I will: I would like to see fewer demands and complaints and more appreciation for all that the volunteers at totalBarca do for the rest of us out of shared love for our team.

    • cruyffish says:

Good stuff and well said flywoman. This is a great site with many excellent contributors. I wanna have a thankful attitude and respect for others here. This is a good reminder…

    • Ghost_of_Sparta says:

I have to add to this that we as a club have so little concerns, we have players for each position x3, almost all world class, the greatest coach in the world and the best style of play in the world… Try supporting Liverpool and you'll see how lucky we actually are… I should know…

    Well said!

OT: Pedro and Tello got lost in the crowd at the airport and the team bus (almost) forgot them :'D Poor guys!

I honestly expect Cules to be better at all things.that isnt to say we should be arrogant,on the contrary, i believe if ppl have been listening to everything pep says and doesn’t say but still expresses in every interview/press conference, if ppl are really looking into all that the club stands for then ironically nobody(not even the author) would have to explain how fans should behave…

  7. BarcaFiume says:

If my english is better I would write the same. Dear Meg Ryan, thank you!! You have my RESPECT.

  8. Simyta says:

Respekt, is something thing Barca is showing to every opponent regardless the chance of win/lose or if they won or lost. It's this behavior and the honest feelings this teams transmits to us, so why not transmit to others. Dear Meg, I really appreciate your words and hope we all can be a bit more calm and cool headed before we "talk/write" and transmit those feelings of being connected and showing respect in the discussions here on tb and to our invironment. Thanks for reminding us ;)

  9. Tank says:

It's hard to say anything against this post. Of course nearly all of it is right beyond doubt. Nevertheless, I think one minor point is debatable. There is one type of Barca-fan that features a combination that I find most puzzling: Those who know nothing about the club but still think it's all shit. I can live with both features, if they appear without the other. It's absolutely okay to be a new Culé. There's nothing wrong about not knowing the club's history. Everybody has started to follow Barca at some point. And if it was only yesterday…welcome my fellow Culé! On the other hand, it is okay to heavily criticise the team, the manager and the directors. There is nothing that should be sacred if the criticism is voiced in a reasonably tone. And if you have thought about it long enough and really think Guardiola (or Xavi,Puyol,…) hinders the development of the team, okay, I disagree but I respect your opinion.

But sometimes, and I fear in increasing numbers, you see comments that just leaves you bewildered. Guardiola = no good/ should leave, Xavi = hates Messi/past it/ does nothing but passing the ball, Iniesta = too ineffective, tiki-taka = boring/ ineffective, Messi = egoist/ controls Guardiola/ or those guys who think Messi is far more important than the team. I could live with everyone of those opinions if they are backed by good arguments. But if they appear without any backing and alltogether as one opnion…I can't help but thinking: And what was it that you liked about Barca? It is far too easy to simply say that those opinions are all voiced by Madrid trolls, because I can't prove it. Neither do I think that that is the case. But it makes me wondering if there is a group of Culés who are totally spoiled without knowing anything about team and club.

Yes, it's right that we should be polite to each other. For my part, I hope I always am. Still, to quote Wayne Rooney, "some people just wind you up".

    • _Lily says:

I agree with this. It really bothers me to see fans bashing Pep or the players. That's not to say that they're above criticism, but there's a huge difference between "I think that Pep used his substitutions too late this game" and "God, Pep is so dumb, it's his fault we lost the game." To me, at least, that's what the distinction is for real fans – do they support the team, or do they start bashing the team when the scoreline is less than 3-0?

I mean, yes, we should all be polite… but Rooney said it well.

      • cruyffish says:

Yes to Tank and Lily! Good qualifications. Let me add one thing…sometimes, but not all the time, very obvious and incredibly nasty trolls do appear. Again, like Tank said we have to be careful to not lump any comment we don't like as simply 'trolls' but when it's obvious calling them out and practicing the 'don't feed the trolls' principle, as I often say, is our responsibility as much as the admins to try and determine who they are…again I am only talking in terms of very obvious, very nasty and personally insulting trolls…not fans who have a differing opinion. That's my humble opinion. Great article and very thoughtfull anyway.

I guess he feels that the team is down in form in February (as usual) and prepares the media excuses for draws (not losses – this will never happen with current ref).

    • _Lily says:

Oh, poor baby. Because Valencia, Atletico Madrid, and Osasuna are all pushovers, right? Because they're so low in the standings? And because Atletico Madrid are not also in recovery?

Thank you for writing what I'm sure was on the mind of a lot of readers here. We all come here because we love Barca and we like to get our daily (or hourly :D ) dose of info.
I especially agree with the no hierarchy part. It really annoys me when I see mean comments putting down new fans, I'm a somewhat new fan myself, I started watching Barca right after Messi's goal against getafe, everybody was talking about it so naturally I got curious and watched it, then I wanted to watch the whole game..then the whole season because they're that good! So does that mean that I'm a bandwagoner or a clueless fan? Of course not.
I only own one Messi T-shirt and a scarf, I've never been to a game but I love this team more than anything else and I will continue to love them till I die.

  18. Barca_4ever says:

well said.. i second what Tank says in a comment just before mine. i hate baseless bashing of our players or any staff member of the club. Respect for the club and its representatives is one of the most important virtues of a fan..

  19. Richzorz says:

Good article. It would be much nicer if all comments had a decent level of thought and reasoning behind them (though I'm perhaps just thinking selfishly that reading through so many comments takes up too much time!), but then again it's a probably downfall of popularity….still at least a massive step up from the yahoo eurosport site and goal.com… B)

  20. AyaFCB says:

Great article… I totally agree with you.. lately there are a lot of negative remarks over here..

Off topic: I know this site is concerned mainly with Barca news and stuff.. But ca I ask about another incident happened in the world of football. I was watching the game of Man United and Liverpool and I saw how Suarez refused to shake hands with Evra. I knew there was a problem between the two but I did not know it was to this extent… Does anyone knows what all of this about.. I understand if you do not want to answer since it is nor related to barcelona..

    • Iris says:

All I know is that Suarez was suspended for 8 games, because he made racist comments towards Evra
apparently he's still angry about that

    • fcbj says:

In the last league game between the two, Suarez said something like "Negro" to Evra. They got into a little fight and afterwards Suarez got banned for 9 matches (racism). Suarez felt the ban wasn't right and apparently held a grudge towards Evra for being a crybaby about it and complaining to the FA. Suarez claims "Negro" isn't a bad word in Uruguay and is teasing, not racist.

So Suarez didn't shake his hand, Evra got all mad and after the match Evra started cheering in front of Luis Suarez and so on. Suarez believes some stuff needs to stay on the pitch, he believed that Evra shouldn't have gone to the FA and complain about it.

      • AyaFCB says:

Thank you Both… that explains everything even Ferdinand refused to shake hands with Suarez after refusing shaking hands with Evra… well thanks any way..

    • kokobarca says:

sUAREZ should have slapped that cunt Evra in the face. Fucking bitch

      • Richzorz says:

YEAH!!! That would have been the only thing he could've done to redeem his character and prove once and for all he's a gentleman and not at all a racist!!
        </sarcasm>

  21. _Lily says:

Thank you for writing this. I think it's something we could all use reminding of.

This does remind me of something, too, on the subject of respect:

I have occasionally seen isolated instances of sexism on this site, but I don't think that there has been a time where I saw it where it wasn't snuffed out by other users very quickly. When I was still fairly new on the site, someone made a comment to me that got about a million thumbs down and several comments saying that true culés weren't sexist before it was deleted.

That is something that, as a woman, I have always valued about totalbarca.

    • Tank says:

Valid point. Same goes for racism. It happens occasionally, but there's always a strong negative reaction to it. Something totalbarca can be proud of.

  22. oyeleye wasiu says:

Barcelona is the only best club i have seen in my live the club make's me happy Men i love this clubbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

  23. Sacha says:

I didn't see what was wrong with criticism(unless using profanity). You're good or you aren't, and there's no shame in saying it.I personally found it cheap to rely on status and past achievements to mask a team's or player's under-performance, or even attitudes and behaviours. That does reveal underlying hypocrisy especially when bashing rival teams excessively.Well do consider the possibility of freedom of expression here…some might run out of excuses to better their relative positioning(via hyping Barça).

    • barcafanir says:

Bench: Adriano, Cesc, Xavi, Iniesta, Tello y Cuenca,

    • Patri says:

Interesting line-up – finally "El Jefecito" in midfield! Pep is really unpredictable (Sergi Roberto)…

    • Anonymous_69 says:

The lineup actually makes sense. With Barcelona's intense high pressure system, if only two or three players are too tired to pressure properly, the whole system collapses. Pedro and Sanchez can pressure better than anyone else on the team, and Thiago and Sergi Roberto have a lot more energy and stamina right now than Xavi and Iniesta. Alves has gotten a good break, he should run a lot. And Masch in midfield will be full of running.

I have a feeling that even if our first team players were fit and ready, Pep would still be playing the young guys a lot. He has a very difficult job this summer, deciding who will be promoted. Oier, Montoya, Bartra, Muniesa, JDS, Sergi Roberto, and now Tello are expecting a full promotion. Pep has a VERY tough job. Between JDS and Sergi Roberto, I honestly don't know what Pep can do. We need both. JDS is extremely underrated and will be needed more and more as a Xavi replacement. No one else is better equiped to take our CM position. But Sergi Roberto might overall be more talented. He reminds me in many ways of Cesc Fabregas, except a more fluent passer.

  33. barcafanir says:

    1. Because the pitch is frozen, Barcelona players will use special boots with many studs tonight. #fcblive [onafm md]. I think this is the reason for this line-up. Pep is afraid of injuries in mid-field before the game in Bayer.
    2. The pitch looks awful: http://twitter.com/#!/danaeboronat/status/1683280

  37. Stealthy says:

Excellent article. While some fans may be people who simply support the current winning team, I doubt those people will bother to post much on a site like this. Most of us here have a genuine passion for the club even though we may differ in our ideas of what the club should do, what players the club should buy, etc.

The comments I dislike most, and I hoe will reduce are those against anyone who criticizes the club. So long as criticism is constructive, I don't see any reason why we should expect other fans to be robots and never complain about the team (or about individual players). Fans of all clubs complain/criticize when their team isn't playing well. It's part of life.

Some of us were supportes during the Van Gaal era and there was really not much to do except complain :D Those were times when we would lead 3-0 and still draw the match!

I appreciate this article and I hope the comments here will become more civil.

  38. BarcaCan says:

I agree, with all the positive comments. "fans" who trash talk other teams/players/managers are shameful to Barcelona. For instance, its true what pepe did was horrendous, but are we any better once we curse, and attack them? As Barca fans we must take it upon ourselves to be respectful to all players/teams/managers. I've ofte read comments of fans (both here, and on highlight vids on youtube) laughing at players and their flaws and failures, but i seriously doubt that any of us will ever be able to preform every week infront of millions enjoying life as they do and being role models, as they do, to the younger generation. No other teams fans are lesser than Barca, and we all share one common fanship, the love for the sport.

  39. therecanbeonlyone says:

Very well said. I might amplify the idea that claims of greater authenticity by any fan are rife with falsehood. Unless you were born at the mid-line at Club Nou and spent every night of your life in La Masia it will be impossible to be that "authentic".
