Josep Guardiola i Sala: A creator of memories

Josep Guardiola i Sala: A creator of memories

The day was May 8, 2008. The season had been tormenting for FC Barcelona fans and on that day, Joan Laporta made an announcement that then Barcelona B coach Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola would be the successor of Frank Rijkaard as the first team coach. Eyebrows were raised, the Internet was scoured for information. Many people had no idea who this fellow was. The Laporta board had taken an immensely risky decision. Looking back, lets just say that it paid off, and how!

“I promise you that we’ll work hard. I don’t know if we’ll win, but we will try very hard.

Fasten your seat belts, you are going to enjoy the ride” – Pep Guardiola (2008)

Pep quickly won the hearts of every cule with his calm, professional demeanour both on and off the pitch, his tactical nous and his relationship with the team. Pep gave the job his everything, sacrificing health, family and peace of mind for the club. Over the four seasons that he has been coach, he gave us cules so much to enjoy, so much to be proud of, but most of all, so much to cherish.

Josep Guardiola is, for many of us, the creator of some of our fondest memories of the last four seasons. Now, he has announced he will not be continuing as head coach for the next season, to reclaim his life and his health, and to recharge his batteries. Let us look back at those moments of awesomeness where we laughed, cried and rejoiced with all cules where Guardiola was the reason. Be it his antics at the sideline as he gesticulated and gestured, his face filled with myriad expressions, his smooth manner with the press, his close relationship with the players at training, his joy when we won a game or a trophy, anything and everything.
