Stat of the Day: The Taxman Cometh

British news daily The Independent ran a story on Saturday outlining the extent to which La Liga football clubs are almost all mired in debt, including our beloved FC Barcelona. Much of this debt has resulted from borrowing to cover player transfers and operating expenses, but a sizable chunk is owed the Spanish government in back taxes. Cumulatively, Spanish Liga teams owe their government 752 million Euros in taxes, with FC Barcelona themselves owing 48 million on a total debt of 364 million. On a more positive note, the club reported revenues of 451 million Euros in the last fiscal year.
