Stat of the Day: Messi zeros in on Stark’s scoring record

What? You’ve never heard of Archibald Stark?

Just so happens that Stark holds the global all-time scoring record for goals in a single season in a first division football club: 70. A certain Argentine striker, Lionel Messi, with 68 goals to his credit this season, has his sights sets on Stark’s record, and has three matches to do it.

A few more details about Stark’s performance will put Messi’s 2011-12 season into perspective. Stark set his record when the USA was a “soccer” powerhouse. He played for an American club called Bethlehem Steel. The year? 1925. This is a record that is nearly 100 years old.
