The Spanish Olympic team was eliminated from the competition on Sunday, losing 0-1 to Honduras. After beginning the tournament with a loss to Japan by the same scoreline, the Spaniards have yet to gain a point or score a goal. And despite the final group match still to play, the Spaniards have been mathematically eliminated from the Games, and will return home after Wednesday’s meaningless encounter with Morocco.

Unfancied Honduras opened the scoring through the tournament’s leading scorer Jerry Bengtson in the 7th minute. And although Spain often went close, they could not work the ball into the net for an equalizer. Barcelona’s new signing Jordi Alba started the match and played the full 90, as did defender Martin Montoya; Barcelona winger Tello was brought on in the 83rd minute but was unable to make an impact on the outcome.
