Sabella: “To see [Messi] up close … was a real eye-opener for me.”

Argentina national team coach Alejandro Sabella recently spoke with FIFA.com, touching upon the albiceleste‘s recent form, their approach to the next World Cup in Brazil in 2014, and of course the contribution of its star player and captain, FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. The complete interview can be found here. A few excerpts are after the jump.

A question about Lionel Messi. What has surprised you about him most as a person?

I knew I’d be working with the best player in the world, a player who can change a game quicker than anyone. But to see him close up, and his acceleration, explosiveness and technique at pace, was a real eye-opener for me. The control he has of the ball at full pace is amazing. It reminds me of the Scalextric I used to play as a kid – those cars going flat out from a standing start. What’s surprised me about him more than anything, though, is what he means to people in India and Bangladesh, for example. It’s incredible. It’s the same in Venezuela, and Colombia was something else. He means so much to people. They idolise him and they’re crazy about him on and off the pitch. It’s unbelievable.

You watch a lot of football. Which national teams have impressed you the most recently?

Germany and Spain are the best sides around. Germany are looking really good and they’ve grown a lot. They’ve brought in a couple of new and very talented young players, the likes of [Thomas] Muller have cemented their places in the team and big-name players like Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger are still there. They’ve gained in experience after going through a transitional phase. Spain are up there as well, no question. They’ve got fantastic potential but sometimes you ease off a little when you’re the world champions. They stand out the most, but then there’s Brazil too. How could I forget about them? Brazil are Brazil, and the five-time world champions too.

Turning back to football now, would you say your biggest problem has been putting the defence together?

Overhauling the defence is taking a bit more time, that’s true. We need to stay grounded about it but when you’ve got strikers of the quality of [Lionel] Messi, [Gonzalo] Higuain and [Sergio] Aguero, I don’t think people should be offended by anyone saying the back line is proving to be a bit more of a headache. The thing is, we don’t have much time to work with and solve the problems inherent in the team. We need to get a good squad together, make sure the players get on well and that they have a sense of belonging and feel something when they pull the Argentina shirt on. That’s what these boys have been doing, especially in the second half against Colombia.

Sabella shows some promise, but still is not fully convincing. Sticking with Demichilles and Rojo, and using De Maria in centre midfield are all pointers.
Hopefully, he still have some time to sort out his midfield and defenses. I really wish he does that. Of course whole ARgentina is to suffer, but it will be Leo who suffers the most, if Sabella doesn't.
His biggest challenge, though, is to make the whole team play for Messi and to drop anybody who is not ready for that.
Everybody talks about Maradona leading Argentina to WC86, but not many people realise that, the 86 team was tuned for Maradona, 100%. A certain Passeralla who didnt oblige just warmed the bench.

I am sure, all of us Barca fans, will hope Sabella to succeed, for the sake of Leo.

IMO he should play Messi behind the forward, supported by advanced wingers on both flanks, Pastore should also get a chance.

Otamendi and burdiso can make a good defense.
Ansaldi is also very talented fullback!!!

      • Write_theFuture says:

        Aguero-Higuain-Messi
        Pastore
        Banega-Gago
        Ansaldi-Otamendi-Mascherano-?
        Romero

I really would like Masche at defense, because that is the only place he has been playing for Barca he is such a boss at it and if he plays DM, one of Banega or Gago has to be sacrificed when both are great players, and then the defense is also weaker.

I agree, Ansaldi is good, why doesn't he play? Plus he can play both RB and LB. The other fullback is a question, maybe Zabaleta?

Unfortunately, it seems one of either Di Maria, Aguero, or Pastore has to start on the bench, which is a shame. Unless Argentina adopt a 3 man defense which is not impossible. If Pep works it to success, who knows?

After Espanyol match, these two days have healed all the wounds and I am so happy! HAPPY! Can't even express myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. alex says:

argentine should play mascherano in defense and zanetti…..with riquelme back….they should be fine

    • Ostap says:

The problem is, they are trying to build a squad for the future, too, with the closest objective being the World Cup in 2014. Zanetti, while no doubt a great player, will be 41 by then (and Riquelme 36).

    Australian newspaper hails Messi: http://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/hail-the-me
"Platini, who had some of the same vision and finesse as Messi, won the Golden Ball trophy from 1983-1985 but, with all due respect, his elevation was by France football journalists and correspondents."

"Ronaldo won't even be at the gala because Jose Mourinho has deemed that it's not sufficiently important for Ronaldo to be in Zurich, given that Madrid has a Copa del Rey match 24 hours later.
No criticism of the decision implied but, visually, Ronaldo's absence from the photo will only serve to emphasize the gulf between him and Messi."

      cheers!

    • shiva el culé says:

Wow! Iker did not even vote for Xavi! Puyol/Xavi need to be the Spanish capitan.

    • Ostap says:

So easy to note biased idiots… also, is there some kind of anti-Messi bias in Oceania? The captains of Australia, New Zealand, Tonga didn't even include Messi in the top 3. Then, of course, half of Africa decided it was the African Player of the Year award and voted in Eto'o. Oh and, WTF Burundi?!

      • _Lily says:

I noticed Burundi, too. Their votes were just bizarre, especially the captain's. 1 Neymar, 2 Abidal, 3 Benzema? Huh??

And Tonga was equally bizarre. 1 Dani Alves, 2 Aguero, 3 Wayne Rooney? Not saying that I don't love Alves, but really???

      • Simi says:

Our NZ coach voted Messi first! Excuse our captain, Tim Brown, there's something wrong with him!

    • Simi says:

At least Messi Voted for Xavi and Iniesta!

  9. FCB says:

    i mean MESSI .. :-p :-O..

  10. _Lily says:

Just want to point out that Sabella's vote in the Ballon d'Or was 1 Messi, 2 Xavi, 3 Iniesta. None of that Ronaldo nonsense.

So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for a little while as he tries to scrape a team together.

  11. Barcafan says:

I dont like nicolas otamendi he cant play against good teams like germany. I remember in the world cup lukas podolski owned nicolas otamendi, and germanys first goal came from a foul nicolas otamendi did on lukas podolski.

  12. melissa_fcb says:

messi is a brilliant player, we all know this and he believes he will win a world cup with argentina
