German club Schalke 04 has announced the signing of FC Barcelona attacker Ibrahim Afellay (26) on loan for one season.
Ibrahim Afellay has passed the medical tests at Schalke and will later today be officially presented by Schalke and take part in a first training session with his new club. Afellay joined FC Barcelona in December 2010.
His spell at FC Barcelona was marred by injuries. He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during training in September 2011 and was sidelined for more than seven months. After undergoing surgery, he went through a long recovery period and in April 2012, he stated he was ready to be recalled to the first team. On 29 April, he returned to the field as a substitute in the 71st minute, replacing teammate Sergio Busquets against Rayo Vallecano in a 0-7 away win for the Catalan side, playing as a central midfielder and impressing in the unorthodox position.
While at FC Barcelona, Ibrahim Afellay won 1 La Liga, 1 Champions League, 1 Supercopa de España, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 FIFA Club World Cup and 1 Copa del Rey.
