Juvenil A: Otten Cup Champions
After beating Anderlecht by one goal to nil in the final, Barça’s Juvenil A team was crowned champions of the Otten Cup in Holland earlier this week. This marks an excellent debut by their new coach Jordi Vinyals, who replaced Oscar Garcia after he left the club at the end of last season following a very successful reign.
The Otten Cup is a prestigious tournament held at Dutch-side PSV Eindhoven’s faculties, with the tournament beginning for Barça this past Friday. Jordi Vinyals, new coach of the blaugrana contingent, made his debut in his new post in this competition, and he repeated last year’s victory, where Barça beat organizers PSV in the final (1-0).
Barça qualified for the semifinals after draws against Twente and Anderlecht, and a victory against Ajax during the group and first stage.
On Sunday, in the semifinal game, Barça earned an easy victory against AZ, 3-0. The goals were scored by David Babunski -who produced a beautiful goal from the middle of the field- , Pol Calvet, and by the team’s goal-scoring killer Sandro Ramírez.
In the final FC Barcelona faced Anderlecht, a team which they had tied at one goal apiece in the group stages. It was a very balanced game and the blaugrana won by a minimum margin of one-nil. The only goal of the game came in the first half and was an own goal. Before that, both Sandro Ramírez and Ebwelle had clear chances to score.
In the second half, Anderlecht pushed harder, even more so in the final minutes, when Barça was reduced to 10 after Sergi Samper was sent off. Despite all this, the blaugrana defended well and maintained their goal intake at zero.
In the end, Barca won the final, picked up the trophy, and captain Nando Quesada was named the best midfielder of the tournament.
