Fernández Borbalán to referee Copa del Rey final

David Fernandez Borbalán has been chosen by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)  to oversee the Copa del Rey final between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club, also commonly known as Athletic Bilbao. The RFEF has announced the decision at the meeting held at the headquarters of the Federation’s Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas.

David Fernandez Borbalán debuted in the Primera Division in September 2004 in a match between Levante and Racing. So far he has led 134 games in the Liga BBVA, 20 in the Segunda Division, numerous international games, as well as some in the Europa League and Champions League. The final on May 25th with be his 20th Copa del Rey match in charge. However, the referee is probably best remembered by blaugrana fans for the only Spanish Super Cup game when he was in charge, which was the second leg between Barcelona and Madrid in 2011 with the famous incident of Mourinho’s finger in the eye of Tito Vilanova.
