On Wednesday night, July 11, 2012, ESPN hosted their 20th annual Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, more commonly known as the ESPYs.  On the evening, Lionel Messi won the Best International Athlete of 2012, beating out arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic and golfer Yani Tseng.  These awards are voted on by fans, showing the rising popularity of football (soccer per the ESPYs) as well as FC Barcelona in the United States.
