UEFA has announced that Turkish referee Cüneyt Çakir (35) will be in charge of the second Group G Champions League match between Benfica and FC Barcelona on Tuesday.
Barcelona fans will recognize Çakir from last year’s semi-final second leg match against Chelsea (2-2). Çakir played a prominent role in that fixture, sending off John Terry in the 36th minute and awarding Barcelona a penalty in the same match.
A number of FC Barcelona’s footballers also played under his whistle during the summer, as he was one of the 12 referees selected by UEFA for this past summer’s European Football Championship tournament in Poland and Ukraine. He was in charge of the semi-final between Portugal and Spain which the Spanish won in the penalty shoot-out. He was also the fourth official in the final which Spain won against Italy.
Çakir made his Champions League debut in September 2010, in a 1-1 draw in the group stages between Rubin Kazan and FC Barcelona, in which both goals came from penalties.
