FC Barcelona officially announced via Twitter on Tuesday evening that Ibrahim Afellay has met with Tito Vilanova and asked permission to not travel to Madrid on Wednesday for the Super Cup. The Dutchman has asked to remain in Barcelona to allow him and his agent to resolve his future, confirming the hints given by his agent earlier this week.
This makes a lot of sense. Afellay has never looked quite the part for Barça, even though his injury did not help. We will however always be thankful for the cross to Messi in the Champions League.
He looks uncomfortable in the system, unable to adapt to the speed of passing and movement and very often slowing down or ruining forward moves. It very clear that the club is putting their faith and future in La Masia with Tello and Cuenca. If he departs, his absence will not be grossly missed and looking at it very cynically the club will make a decent profit on any sale (whether immediately or after a loan).
More news to come in the next few days before the window shuts Friday evening.
