Post-Match Review: FC Barcelona 2-1 Real Sociedad

Post-Match Review: FC Barcelona 2-1 Real Sociedad

The reason for FC Barcelona’s bad luck this season finally made itself known in the La Liga game against Real Sociedad. A black cat crossed the paths of our players during tonight’s game and now all of the serious injuries and seven point deficit seem to make sense. Unfortunately, the strange and shocking revelation did not bring an end to the Catalans’ problems. On the contrary, it may have just exacerbated the issue. Although the team won 2-1, crucial midfielder Sergio Busquets was stretchered off the pitch after a late tackle and his return is still unknown.

Head coach Pep Guardiola, still unaware of the black cat, fielded a very youthful lineup. While many were thrilled that B-teamers who have shown a lot of spark in the last few games as substitutes, such as Tello, were getting the start, the new lineup also proved how much the midweek Copa del Rey clash with Valencia CF cost the veteran starters. In full, Valdés, Alves, Puyol, Mascherano, Adriano, Fàbregas, Dos Santos, Thiago, Messi, Cuenca, and Tello began the game for the blaugrana.

The game started off with very high energy, probably due to all of the fresh legs on the pitch for Barcelona. Real looked just as dangerous though, and within the first minute Valdés was forced to save a shot. However, Messi returned the favor by testing Bravo in the 4th minute. The back and fourth continued again a minute later when Ifran made a great shot that Valdés had to agilely save.

After eight minutes, the intensity quickly paid off as Barcelona netted its first goal of the night thanks to the prodigy Tello. Messi provided the simple assist through the defense that Tello just had to connect with and guide into the goal. After a series of games where early goals were all but nonexistent, this fairly fast goal was a stunner.

Barcelona continued its goal-scoring hunt in the 14th minute when Cesc launched the ball well over the crossbar. In the 17th minute, Messi once again had a clear opportunity denied by Bravo. Messi and Cesc combined for the next attempt which saw La Pulga slide a perfect assist to Cesc who wasted his one-on-one with Bravo by again kicking his effort high.

Dos Santos pulled a strike just wide of Real’s net in the 30th minute. Tello consistently terrorized his wing, forcing corners and aiming perfect crosses into the box for his teammates. The half ended 1-0 to Barcelona largely because of him.

The second half kicked off with a chance for Real that defenders Puyol and Mascherano dealt with confidently. In the 51st minute, the blaugrana backline was again tested and Valdés had to come up with the clutch save. Just six minutes later, Ifran, one of Real’s most important players during the game, injured himself and had to be substituted off in favor of Carlos Vela.

Right after the substitution, Messi still could not get a shot past Bravo after a Tello assist. If it were not for the goalkeeper, Real may very well have been much farther behind than just a single goal. Once Messi was able to beat Bravo in the 62nd minute, his strike was cleared off the line by a defender. Real’s defense could not rest as the 67th minute produced a lofting Messi assist straight to a stampeding Puyol that Bravo managed to collect.

Barcelona had the ball in the back of the net in the 68th minute after Tello converted the rebound of Cuenca’s off the post shot, but Alves strayed offside and the goal was disallowed. Camp Nou did not have to wait long for the second goal – or third, for that matter. Alves chipped a ball over the Real defense to Messi who slipped it past Bravo and into an empty net in the 72 minute. Unfortunately, Carlos Vela broke away from the defense and pulled one back for his team against Valdés just one minute later.

Barcelona had been in control for most of the game, but it looked as if the habitual bad luck had returned. The 76th minute called for a double substitution to help reinvigorate the team to take the lead once again. Puyol and Dos Santos came off for Abidal and Busquets. A minute later, Real followed suit by switching Pardo with Llorente.

Busquets’ match came to an abrupt in at the 81st minute after the substitute was incapacitated by a late tackle. The deep gash in his knee is treatable, but the defensive midfielder still had to be carried off the pitch and is uncertain for upcoming fixtures. Defender Piqué came on in his place. The last few minutes were frantic as Real desperately tried to equalize and Barcelona tried to maintain its lead. Fortunately for the blaugrana, no more goals were scored and the score line remained 2-1.

A black cat, perhaps it is the reason for all of Barcelona’s troubles. How a cat even snuck its way into Camp Nou, let alone to streak across the pitch, is still a mystery. Then again, so is Barcelona being seven points behind in the League and having almost a half dozen first team players injured. Superstition may be an easy excuse, but hopefully the season is not so out of hand that Barcelona has to result to blaming scared animals for its struggles.

  1. The youngsters added a bit of intensity that has been lacking but they still don't have the experience and we miss Xavi a bit to totally dominate games. Really pleased for Tello who is going to be another big discovery. But man of match goes to Valdés for those stops against Ifran and Griezmann. • Tirasus says:

Tello was very impressive – good mentality, energetic, worked hard.

Cuenca was unlucky not to score, was inconsistent, but overall played well I thought.

It was Dos Santos that impressed me yesterday. Was efficient in midifeld spraying out passes. He is a very good long passer – 14 out of 14. Commentators were saying how he's not a natural holding player and how he disappeared throughout the game, which I think was rather wrong. He is more a Xabi-Alonso-like player in his passing, distribution and positioning and yet at times he was rather busquets like with his short passing – giving the ball to others efficiently.

Plus all these players are only going to improve with experience

  2. molecule says:

A great effort by the youngsters!

  3. And the news on Busquets knee is no more than a week out, he could even be ok for Wednesday

    • Dude says:

Yeah he'll be alright, just got gashed which looked painful.

    • Petertits10 says:

Nothing more that a cut I guess, I was so scared! Especially after I saw Cesc's reaction!!!

      • ram says:

thank god…… i thought it was very big injury… especially after cesc's reaction…. cesc reacted in the same way when ramsey broke his leg… great … thanks for the update…..

  4. 1235k says:

People who say Pep needs to rest Messi need to remember his comments yesterday – he said Messi plays because he wants to and his teammates want him to stil do the PK's. It was kind of implied that what Messi wants Messi gets. Yes, Pep is coach but I think there is this feeling that when Messi doesn't get his way he will get upset and they don't want an upset Messi.

    • Dude says:

Messi is just Messi. He just needs to shave the beard, and then he'll be back in form. lol

    • bock says:

for real? not sure i like the sound of that. messi is messi but that makes it sound like pep and the club is kinda licking his a**. and despite the goal tonight, i think he needs rest.

      • jacobmu says:

He's missed some chances the last couple of games, but look at all the clear cut scoring opportunities he creates even when he "needs a rest". I'd like to see him get a rest because I can't imagine a human body being able to withstand the wear and tear that he puts on it. Of course, I'm not a freak like Messi. Let's not kid ourselves…even though he wasn't finishing like we are used to, he was EASILY the best player on the pitch. He got unlucky and that happens. He still scored his goal, set up Tello's goal, played in Cesc for a 1 v 1, played in Alves and had several clear cut scoring opportunities that he just didn't finish. We are seriously overreacting to this.

    • Ceska says:

That’s what happened in the early season.. all balls in front of goal must be passed to Messi..everything was built around him..then Villa didn’t score..Pedro didn’t score.. other forward lost their touch and fans blamed Xavi for not giving all balls to Messi when he has Villa, Pedro, Iniesta & Alves infront..And now Messi wants to take all the free kicks!

Real Madrid is our bitter rival but I think this season they have played as a team. Everyone scores: Ronaldo, Higuan, Benzema, Ozil..

      • Wordbender says:

O! All of a sudden… Barca dont play like a team anymore? Messi takes all the freekicks!?? Messi scores all the goals??? What the hell!? Who else apart from crynaldo takes d FK for madrid? FTR Only four(I tink) barca first team players haven’t scored dis season…how else do u want goal distribution?? Dont know y when things are going slightly difficult, sum ppl tend to see things dat dont exist?! My only fear is for messi- I pray he doesn’t break down sumday, cus his constant availability is sumwhat abnormal- I mean! Dis guy should take sum days off!!

        • DANNY NEYO says:

what else do we wnt MESSI to do?Lets appreciate ds guy.we are so lucky to av him.Concerning d team,we are missing sum1 special.*DON INNIESTA*.Assuming *D DON* is available, nobody wil be talkin abt FAB.Great show by TELLO.CUENCA,com’on,wake up men!u can do more.DOS SANTOS won my MOTM.valdez, keep it up man!

      • shrekels says:

couldnt be more true. everything we try is through Messi. We he has an off game we suffer. We have to get goals from elsewhere, cant keep relying on one individual. We also try and pass the ball to him even when other players are in better position.

You look at Madrid. This season they have won easily against these so called "weaker" teams and have consistent goalscorers not just in Ronaldo, but Benzema and Higuain.

I'm a big barca fan and we have to admit we have been nowhere near our best. We'll try to reduce this 7 point gap but we all know its a hard task. Lets learn from this season and bring in these youngsters and win it all again next year.

    • pedrito says:

please don't ever let messi take pk again.

  5. TKR says:

Just some of my observations from 15min forward.

Seems like the first game we got to see Dos Santos actually play, though I wouldn't say he was spectacular.

Tello made the same runs and succeeded almost every time. What he did is exactly what a winger does and he did a perfect job at it, like a textbook definition.

Mascherano also had an immense game. I'm starting to believe he actually is better playing CB than DM. I'd go so far as to say that if it weren't for Barca's lack of tall players I'd take Masch over Pique every time.

Fabregas is starting to piss me off, he's missed every opportunity possible in the past games that I already lost track.

Its a shame that Busquets has to get injured, he was only on for 10 minutes. I'm sure Pep is regretting that one, though nobody can blame anybody. Just horrible luck in general, I can only hope he recovers quick.

  6. smirky says:

please don't blame the black cat – it is a bad superstition to promote – many black cats are mistreated and killed because of this old belief.

i just got a beautiful black cat from a shelter where he had lived for TWO YEARS – the people there said no one EVER adopts adult black cats. He's really wonderful – and his name?? Xavi! So far he has brought only great joy and delight and companionship.

someone said the cat lives at the camp nou – maybe he's a good hunter, and maybe good luck. after all, the match was won, busquets will be back on the pitch soon, and the cat didn't disrupt the play!

here, kitty kitty kitty! >^-^< ;-)

    • Omar says:

I totally agree. Please don't perpetuate this ugly stereotype about black cats. There are enough psychos out there and we don't need to give them more reasons to mistreat animals. The cat was just celebrating another barca win. Here is hoping we can close the gap on those crybabies!!,

  7. nia says:

It's either it was so cold that poor Busi didn't bleed or he's so skinny that he's just skin and bones. But seriously though, i'm glad he wasn't seriously injured. Poor Cesc has had to endure the horrible tackles of the epl that he was clearly shocked by the injury.

    • DikoBarca says:

I've had that kind of injury a long time ago. And I also didn't bleed much but I can see all white cartilage tissue, which was scary. LOL.

  8. chad says:

This squad is made up of so many extraordinary talents, it's hard to single any individual player out as indispensable. But Busquets comes close. They win games with Keita taking that defensive midfield role, and Mascherano can obviously take that position. Dos Santos played pretty well there today. But Barcelona just moves the ball so much more effectively when he's there, and he also plays well defensively. I'm glad to hear he's not seriously injured.

  9. sss says:

who wait for superbowl tomorrow???? support New England Patriots because of Tom Brady, the Xavi of American Football…..you know sometimes you should chill up and watch another sports for entertainment, especially with Barca not playing good right now

    • sss says:

wow people here really hate american football for sure……its not like i stop watch barca, i always watch and support barca, just find some entertainment out there…….

      • Byronic says:

I doubt they hate American Football, I bet instead they dislike your comparison. Brady and Xavi aren't alike at all. One is a mastermind on the pitch and completely humble, the other is a vain stuck up supermodel that doesn't even understand the word humble.

        • !@# says:

this particular thread doesn't pertain to the article at hand, but please, outline, with examples, how tom brady isn't humble. i'm not a patriots fan, but i figured i'd call "bullsh!@" on your claim.

        • sss says:

well humble or not humble is different matter ( i know some madrid fans called xavi arrogant because he is one of barca players that always speak up against casillas ) but Tom Brady style of play, accurat passing, control of the game, and always consistent make him like Xavi of American Football

  10. TUQINATOR says:

Glad to see Buesquest not seriously injured! When I first saw his knee it looked like there was a whole!! I predicted him to be out for sevral months! Glad to see him not seriously injured :D HAVE HOPE IN LIGA CULES! ITS NOT OVER YET!

  11. Jerm says:

I just wanted to point out to the author, that Barcelona is playing VALENCIA in the copa del Rey semifinal not VILLAREAL as it is stated on the second paragraph on this article I realize that is not the point of the article but is it kind of embarrassing not to know who your opponent will be in a few days for a hardcore fan.

    • reality_check says:

are you serious? Really? you want to call on the writer for 1 minor flaw? Rather than being such a 'critic' why not appreciate that the writers here write for us fans despite this website being a voluntary one?

    • _Lily says:

Sometimes people just write the wrong thing down. It doesn't mean that they're not "hardcore" fans. It just means that they have a spaz moment. I had one just a couple weeks ago where I said that Chelsea was playing Tottenham when the game was Man City/Tottenham. I wasn't actually confusing Chelsea and City – I just misspoke. It happens. Just point it out, don't get rude about it.

  12. 309 says:

I do still believe Messi need one match rest or just start from the bench. Please still remember Messi is still a human even though his football skill tells us another story :p

  13. nat says:

i believe cesc needs to settle in the team, but missing glaring chances has got nothing to do with settlng down.its becoming a norm for him to spurn clear cut chances.maybe he should start warming the bench.

  14. barcabam says:

I think we’re being a bit unfair on Cesc here, yes he was god awful against villarreal last week but tonight I was quite pleased with him despite his torres-type miss – how the hell did he miss it. But anyway, his passing was great I think, no stupid loose passes and quite good distribution and runs though. He played as a true MF today and did well to pass the ball around. We always say he can’t pass and etc which is true but last night he passed the ball quite well but missed badly and we’re banging him about it. Cut the new boy some slack mocmocmoc, glad to have won :D

  15. Kef says:

Let’s see you Barca fans answer a legitmate question: had Messi never had the HGH treatments, would he still play for Barca and have won the Balon D’Or? If you answer no, does that mean that he has substantially altered his natural physique in order to be physically able to play competitive football? Wouldn’t that definition mean he’s a cheat? In my eyes, he used a man made substance to increase his phsyical stature, his ability to heal, his physical strength. That is cheating. Most other competition bodies ban HGH, so why football, FIFA and UEFA both, don’t, is beyond me.

    • sss says:

so youre not Barca fans, yes i want to answer you, barca is cheat, messi is cheat, wherever barca do is cheat………..are you satisfied now???

    • Byronic says:

He took the treatments at age nine for four years, you make it sound as if he is currently using a banned substance. On a side note the use of HGH is only considered an anabolic steroid for a normal human being not a person with growth hormone deficiency.

The substance was used in an attempt to bring his HGH levels to those of a healthy person which bring him on par with every healthy human being. I'm curious how you think it has affected his ability to heal and his physical strength between the age of 9 and 13.

    • Eric_Castel says:

NO NO, simply Professor X made him mutant and now he is a member of the X-MEN!!!

  16. Barcaholic says:

I don't think I have ever watched a Barca game where we WASTED SO MANY CHANCES like yesterday evening. What do you guys think?

  17. FarmindCreus says:

This bad luck with scoring and injuries gets just crazy. It has to turn soon and I bet it will. I guess the next weeks will be a struggle but maybe the CL games with Leverkusen would kick off a brighter spring where we might still be able to challenge RM with La Liga.

  18. DoRy says:

Sociedad's player's hand is in a weird place in that picture…

  19. is is says:

    I miss Xavi & Iniesta :(

  20. MANMEET says:

its a good result but more importantly if refree's let real madrid get away with all penalties we are not going to retain title yesterday getafe should had got penalty and it easily could have been a draw but if refree's help madrid they wont be dropping any points and laslty how many times would refrees turn blind on pepe he gets away stamping on messi hand yesterday he got away with penalty

  21. Capitán X. says:

Our injury situation could be a blessing in disguise. I mean our players could come back and give us a good run in when Madrid would probably be tired. Who knows?
