Post-Match Review: FC Barcelona 2-0 Valencia CF
Another Final
After a cracking first leg at the Mestalla last week, FC Barcelona entertained Valencia at the Camp Nou tonight with both sides confident of meeting Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final. Valencia’s chances were dealt a cruel blow however, with the eleventh hour absence of their talismanic striker Roberto Soldado, who bowed out with flu like symptoms just before kick off. On a cold night in Catalonia, Dani Alves was frozen out of a backline that was comprised of Puyol, Mascherano, Pique, and Abidal. An injury to Busquets left the midfield shy of a holding player as Xavi, Fabregas, and Thiago held the fort, and the attacking trio consisted of Alexis, Messi, and new kid on the block, Isaac Cuenca.
The opening minutes were cagey with neither side giving an inch. Mascherano was alert at the back and Sanchez was causing the visitors some early palpitations. On eleven minutes Valencia should have taken the lead after good work on the left from Mathieu, after he found the run of Feghouli who drove the ball wide from close range with just Pinto to beat. Messi picked up the ball in his own half at the quarter hour mark and lofted a thirty yard pass for Fabregas to chase. With three defenders breathing down his neck the former Gunner flicked the ball over Diego Alves’ head to take the lead.
A mistake at the back from Rami was punished by Messi three minutes later, who snatched the ball and embarked on a blistering forward run. The Argentine got his shot away and Diego Alves’ save fell to the feet of Cuenca, who somehow missed from eight yards. Aduriz was carded minutes later after a late tackle on Thiago. On the half hour mark Fabregas found himself clear through on goal after another mix up at the back, but once again Diego Alves was equal to the task. Barcelona’s players were beginning to impose themselves on proceedings at this stage and playing a tantalizing brand of football that delighted the home crowd. Feghouli was carded just before the break as he pulled down Thiago and as the teams ran for the tunnel, Guardiola must have been wondering how his team was only ahead by the smallest of margins.
Straight after the restart, Jordi Alba out-ran Puyol after a great first touch to find himself through on goal, but his shot was denied by Pinto’s excellent reflexes. Ruiz was yellow card minutes later after a poor challenge on Xavi. Mascherano had to be alert to head the ball from the line after Pinto ran off his line too eagerly, with the keeper caught in no man’s land and he was almost punished. Alexis pinched a loose ball from Victor Ruiz to set Messi free, but yet again Alves proved to be unbeatable from close range. Fabregas was booked with twenty minutes left for protesting a dubious off side decision against Sanchez. Banega was replaced by Tino Costa and while Barça continued to search for the killer goal, good chances fell to Valencia who only needed one goal to reach extra time.
Feghouli harshly received his second yellow and was sent off for needless use of the arm on Puyol. Piatti took to the field for Jonas for a final throw of the dice for Unai Emery. A very well worked movement started with Alexis. He drew the defender and picked out Fabregas, who slid the ball across the square to Xavi, who took one touch before rifling a right footed shot that finally beat the almost impenetrable Diego Alves. The other Alves, Dani, came on with five minutes left for Alexis and Cristian Tello made a cameo for Cuenca in the dying minutes. Iniesta took to the pitch for a fraction of the injury time, much to the approval of the Camp Nou faithful. The score remained unchanged as Barcelona reach yet another final. Let’s hope it won’t be their last final of the season as they take to the road next week to defend their Champions League crown at Bayer Leverkusen. Their frantic calendar shows little sign of slowing down. Thankfully neither do the players!

Great win and a nice match again, but it didn't come easy! Credit to Valencia, they deserved a goal and gave it all. I think the red card in the end broke their spirit, you could see the bottle was empty after that.. Before the sending off they looked really dangerous on the left wing(Barca's rightwing). Barca struggled a bit with their pace, especially on Barca's right wing..
Pinto made some great saves, thanks to him Valencia did not score immediately after the break, which could have been a turning point.
Barca were almost punished for not coming fresh, sharp and fully concentrated on the pitch after the break, the same happened against Madrid, when they were really punished for their sloppy attitude after the break and let the match slip out of their hands. Danger always looks around the corner when the match looks decided, because the players have the tendency to let it go and lose their full concentration.
Barca looks vulnerable with ball loss at the moment. I miss a little bit the Barca which immediately recuperates after they lose the ball and close in on their opponents and doesn't give their opponents space to break out.
Great to have Sanchez who keeps giving the opponent trouble with his pace, I think he should even be able to take advantage of that more. Also really nice to see some new talents on the pitch in the last weeks. Suddenly, out of the blue, we have Cuenca regarly being part of the team, and now this Tello with his great pace shows up in the last matches. Last season there was this talk about Thiago maybe not going to renew his contract and move to another club and now this fantastic player looks really happy and well integrated into the selection.
I hear talk about new players who might come to the Nou Camp next season, but I really enjoy to see new players from Barca's own training grounds coming through at the moment. That keeps the first team sharp and fresh and for us spectators it is simply fantastic so see new talented players every time.
All credits to Guardiola and his staff!
I hope that stuff about Thiago isn't true. He's great. To me Thiago is already maybe one of the best people on our squad right now.

Promotion
On 29 June 2011, Thiago signed a contract renewal keeping him at Barcelona until 30 June 2015, with a buyout clause of €90 million.
If Valencia deserved a goal, then we deserved 6 goals. I understand you want to be polite and all, but we were far superior to Valencia in these two matches, let there be no doubt about that.

this is for the spoiled fans
"As a Barca fan, 2012 has not been the kindest so far. Looking around at my fellow Cules, there’s a sense of despair, agony, misery, and disbelief. A player scores 23 goals in 20 games and he’s in crisis? A squad close to extinction with 15 first team players available for selection; including 2 goalkeepers and a newly promoted reserve player, are underachievers when they’re still fighting on 3 fronts?
This preview will be quite different to my usual previews. I want to try something different and I want you to bear with me.
So we drew at the Mestalla, big deal! We’ve gone 7 games without a win at the Mestalla since 2008, what were you expecting?! The 1-1 draw is a fantastic result for us. Given that we complete the job at the Camp Nou of course. As a believer in the team I love, I can only see us doing that!
It might be a big statement but this is really how I feel. Yes, probably Mathieu and Alba will tear our right hand side, again. But who would say that the spirits of the Camp Nou won’t be on our side? As explained at the time by Pep, the first leg showed massive performance improvements than previous visits. Had it not be to lady luck and some poor finishing from Alexis and Cesc, the game could have easily finished in Barca’s favor.
What’s sickening however is the fans reaction to recent events and injuries; all of which contribute to the notion that Barca are doomed. Some stupid statements like Pep should not have started Puyol as a RB and Alves as a second striker or right wing forward, or Tello should have started instead of Adriano. As valid statements as they might be, where the heck were you when Barca needed you when Van Gaal was the manager or when Rijkaard lost his mojo? You’re actually taking turns shooting down the coach and his team that have won 13 titles out of a possible 16? Really?!
Fans now scream their heads off for Tello. The same fans that a couple of months back were calling for Cuenca to start every match. Exactly the same group that now wants to kick out the now useless Cuenca and play JDS, it’s absurd! What happened to supporting your team, sticking by your players when they are in a bad patch of form? If Messi continues his “below par” performances, will you be calling for his head now?
Is Pep God? No, he makes mistakes. Does he intentionally get his players injured? No. Are the players not committed enough? No, they wouldn’t be injuring themselves if they were not trying to push themselves beyond their limits. Are they low on confidence? With the luck they’ve had do you blame them? So what should we do? Stick by the team! Whether Iniesta, Pedro, Alexis, or Busquets manage to play is irrelevant. Yes it would definitely ease our fears, but deep down we need to believe that this TEAM will fight till the end on all fronts.
So for all you bandwagon fans please leave us in peace. We’re more than glad to see the back of you. I trust Pep and the team, they’ve earned it. So when I predict a 3-1 win for Barca at the Camp Nou against Valencia in the second-leg of the 2011-2012 CDR semi-final, I’m confident that we can achieve it."
thx for your reply, but I do not fully understand why you post it as a reply to my posting. Is it because you consider me one of those bandwagon fans? Or is it because you sort of agreed with my posting and the fact that I gave credit to Guardiola and the staff for time after time being able to integrate new players in the team and keeping the squad hungry and motivated despite all their successes!
looking forward to the final… hopefully Villa will be back and can play a part, i would like him to feel part of winning another trophy with the team
And Afellay would certainly be back.
quite sick and tired of people picking on pinto..pinto has never disapointed us in any game. since he has been goaille we have reached the the final 3 times and lost in the final in extra time. he won the pichichi verson for goalkeeprs when he was syill with celta before coming to barca. name me 1 game where we lost because of pinto..just one..i remember not long ago when vladez was crucyfied for his pathetic mistakes and yet he got better..even recently against madrid he cost us a goal and even against arsenal at the emrites he cost us the game we lost 2-1. infact before rikaad came, valdez almost quit because of the negativity around him and look at him now…pinto does not play week in week out yet as soon as he is on call he always comes through. i have 100% fail in pinto and we have the best goalkeeper in europe and the best backup fo sho…thinking of how crap valdez was 6 seasons ago, i wonder if the roles were reversed and pinto was 1st choice and valdez second. would he be as good? most people would prob be ripping valdez like they are pinto…..
vamos PINTO PINTO PINTO PINTO PINTO
Visca el Pinto!
For me the best player on the pitch from Valenciea was Jordi Alba……. we should buy him….. he is not much expencive as Bell….. and as he is from barca's youth team he knows our playing style well………. a very good match for fabregas….. thumbs up for him….
mathieu was better.
Wow! What a final do we fc Barcelona fans have on may 25 with a 2-2 game between ath Bilbao and fc Barcelona back in November I hope that all the players from both fc Barcelona and ath Bilbao get to this final with no injuries so we who love this beautiful game can see a great game Visca BARÇA!
Everybody played well! Visca Barca!
We really need a true striker. Since last couple of months i feel like we r missing something big here…. With true (villA) we could have scored couple of more goals for sure….
Except messi i see hesitation on taking shots at goal which will kill us
Looks like we will be buying bojan back or new striker in summer or we will have hard time next season
no bojan no matter how difficult our life is. he is a flop.
bojan is a crap!
bojan has one more year in roma before he can come back and even then i don't know if he would want to, heck i don't even know if anyone here wants him back. They're have been rumors of RVP but bartomeu shut those down quickly. I don't think we will sign a striker until we see villa's performances at the end of the season and in euro. If villa can't return to his best or near his best which will be difficult considering the injury he had at his age, we might look to someone else.
If we had to sign a striker who would it be and why?
A striker will come…but only in 2014…and his name is……….NEYMAR !!!
i prefer keisuke honda.. he is the best in asia.. sign him please!
Honda is attacking MF, not striker. He almost got transferred to Lazio, but the deal collapsed last week.
RVP
So all the people who blame cesc for everything are quiet, but they will be on his case again when he has an off day-so sad.
It's his first season and I am Impressed.
A
J just wondering, hy don't Barca try to sign up Valencia's keeper?Actually he's very good, made many saves in this match, also in 1st leg…maybe he's even better than Pinto?
We have to win this one.And the chamions league since I dont see Madrid dropping 7 points in the league. It is more likely that we will drop points rather than madrid. So 2 trophies is a must
BRAVO BARCA.
we will knock madrid out of champions league.
yeah!
absolutely!!
visca barca!
i'd prefer that someone else knocks them out. not that i'm afraid they could win in a two legged tie against us BUT i'm very scared they will once again injure our players. i want them to suffer against zska and i want to see zska knocking them out.
I hope someone else knocks them out….. 2 more classicos will equal alot more injuries for our players
Regardless of what he did yesterday PINTO is not good enough for Barca.
Im of the opposite opinion. I think Pinto was terrible yesterday but he still belongs in Barca. He is a good humble goalie and a great dude to have in your squad
