Post-Match Review: CA Osasuna 3-2 FC Barcelona

Post-Match Review: CA Osasuna 3-2 FC Barcelona

On a cold night in Pamplona, when the pitch was frozen and the bitter wind blew violently, FC Barcelona dropped even more points in La Liga away against CA Osasuna. Whether it be the weather, the unfamiliar stadium and fans, or the fairly poor performance by the players, the team’s excuses are piling high. Soon, even those will not be enough to rescue the league title.

Head coach Pep Guardiola decided to experiment with his lineup. It is not sure why he decided to rest so many starters and fill in with B team players. One could argue that some players needed rest after the midweek Copa del Rey win and before the Champions League quarterfinals in a few days. Whatever the reason, Valdés, Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal, Mascherano, Thiago, Sergi Roberto, Alexis, Messi, and Pedro began the game.

The situation for Barcelona went from miserable to almost unbearable in just four minutes. Puyol turned the ball over to Raul Garcia who In turn passed it off to Lekic. Lekic went to goal and scored against a helpless Valdés. In Barcelona’s defense, the team did rally and score a goal of its own in the 9th minute. Unfortunately, Alexis’ goal from Thiago’s assist was ruled wrongly offside and disallowed. Just a minute later, Messi made a curling shot that Osasuna goalkeeper Fernandez was able to tip out of his net.

The first yellow card of the match was given to Sergi Roberto in the 15th minute after a challenge on Nino. Barcelona’s frustration after the missed chances was clearly beginning to show. The players’ feelings would only increase in the 22nd minute when Lekic scored yet another goal. Cejudo gave the cross into the box that Lekic was able to get on the end of and tap into the net.

Messi attempted another shot after a great Alexis’ assist in the 27th minute but continued his bad luck with goalkeepers as Fernandez saved again. The 36th minute saw Alexis receive a yellow card for kicking the ball away after the whistle.

Barcelona tried to pull a goal back as the last minutes of the first half wound down, but were unable to create many chances or capitalize on them. A rousing halftime lecture by Guardiola was sure to be heard in the blaugrana locker room.

The second half’s first action was Barcelona’s first two substitutions. Cuenca and Tello replaced Pedro and Puyol, respectively. The substitutes seemed to do some good, as in the 52nd minute, Alexis scored.  Cuenca crossed in the assist to the far post that Alexis knocked into the net. With the score line now 2-1, the chances of a comeback seemed much more likely.

The feeling of confidence did not last long, however, as Raul Garcia earned his goal just four minutes later. Osasuna won the ball back and Nino passed back to Raul Garcia, who hit the ball into the net off the near post. A minute later, Alves was booked with a yellow card and will miss next weekend’s Valencia game on suspension.

The goal scorer Raul Garcia was shown a yellow card in the 61st minute for bringing down Thiago. One minute more, and Alexis’ wicked header sailed over the crossbar, denying Barcelona to cut the lead to one. The 70th minute gave Puñal a yellow card. Barcelona needed to emphasis its attack, and did this by switching two of the moc-moc trio. Piqué came off for Cesc, and Osasuna also subbed off goal scorer Lekic for Ibrahima.

The amazing young winger, Tello, was the one to convert Barcelona’s second goal in the 73rd minute. Without much help from his teammates after Cesc passed him the ball, Tello made a cutting run into the box and aimed for the top-right corner of the goal with his left foot, sinking the strike past Fernandez.

Barcelona controlled much of the possession throughout the match, and now just one goal away from the equalizer, the team tried to make its most amazing comeback this season. Osasuna, for its part, was not ready to let the Catalans come back. In the 77th minute, Puñal crashed a shot off the left post, denying his team another goal.

The 79th minute saw Osasuna make another substitution with Nino changing with Toribio. Just two minutes later, Tello had another chance on goal but Fernandez was able to stretch and push the ball out. Luck was not in Barcelona’s favor as Alexis again had the ball in the back of the net after a chipped assist from Messi, but it was likewise called unfairly offside and disallowed in the 81st minute.

Valdes earned a yellow card in the 85th minute for dissenting Osasuna’s timewasting tactics. Three minutes later, Osasuna made its last substitution as another goal scorer, Raul Garcia, made way for Damia. In the first of five minutes of stoppage time, Mascherano joined his teammates in the referee’s book.

Although the last minutes were fought valiantly, Barcelona still failed to break down the Osasuna defense enough to salvage a point. This means that if Real Madrid CF wins tomorrow against Levante, then Barcelona will officially be ten points off of first place in La Liga.

There is no way to sugar coat it, ten points would be a huge gap. Believing in this team is always necessary, but today was a bad game with many defensive errors and a continued lack of creativity. If any team can bridge a ten point gap and win the league, it is Barcelona, but there is no doubt that it will be an uphill battle.  However, everyone should read the article posted previously today, “On being a fan,” and realize that our reaction should reflect the kind of fans that we are.

The match between Osasuna Pamplona and Barcelona Fc was played in extreme conditions. As expected, the pitch is frozen. The city of the Navarre area has undergone a windy cold, just like all of Europe. This week, Pamplona was below 0 degrees. A temperature of -5 ° C for the reception of the Catalans at the Reyno de Navarra (not used to these conditions) with an arbitration somewhat chaotic yet …

  2. pudge says:

It is absolutley unforgivable that a team of this quality have blown the league by early February

  3. Viktor007 says:

One has to have the evidence, ensuring a second place Liga (less prestigious) & target cuts! A year of "rest" to better prepare the next … Some players need to blow into this perspective, it is quite normal and humane, especially with the philosophy of play Barcelona, after four years of such intensity, although the number is growing (potentially) players must be integrated (and / or ripen) more for eventual level of absences / tournover and regain intensity of play

  4. enezx says:

its a pity – that someof the fans say – pep out and messi is too slefish and static
I mean really ??? you people think so – what did people expect -we’ll keep on winning laliga for the next hundred years?
The most ridiculuous statement is to sack PEP – wtf? he outwitted mourinho so many times- he is the ultimate tactician
And another – messi is to otatic and he is selfish – he is the best in the history and stop blaming him
I thought only other teams ‘ fans blast their own players but barca’s fans are the same

  5. desicule says:

i know a lot of dislikes coming my way, but i always felt that pique is just an ordinary defender made to look good by a brilliant DM and a team that helps out by tracking back, otherwise he is just mediocre….

    • mike in africa says:

that’s tad a bit harsh. pique is a good defender, definitely above average and with some outstanding attributes. but yes, he’s overrated.

    • Ceska says:

Agreed! Why we don’t concede goals because our best defense is our ball possession. We have more than 60% possession in almost all matches. Our opponents hardly have the ball so how can they attack us.

  6. Devox says:

I think Pep was thinking of CL as a not acceptable loss with losing Liga as an acceptable price which is logic, if you have two things one you know you can do it and the other you are not sure if you can finish it then you will focus on not loosing the first. but i wanted him to gamble more and let Xavi or Inista play form the start and not give away the Liga. i believed we can win the Liga tell yesterday. now we gave away the Liga, loosing CL or the Cup is not acceptable to me

  7. wild_bunch says:

hi,this is my first comment here…
I hate seeing fans with "porque" mentality… we lost because we weren't good. period. also, i do not think that another striker is the solution for us (e.g Ibra case).
i do think that we need to play in our best possible squad.. you cant put on field 3 youngsters in the midfield at the same time (1 or 2 is the max) and they must not be concentrated in a single area such as central midfield…
my squad for the rest of season..
    valdes
alves puyol (mascerano over pique) (abidal over adriano)
(xavi over thiago) busquets (iniesta over cesc)
(sanchez over cuenca) messi (villa over pedro & tello)

    • wild_bunch says:

      1. no more than 2 b-options
      2. alves can move to the right midfield if we want 343
3.adriano is not MF and surely not LW
      4. at least two of these must play (xavi iniesta cesc busi)
      5. at least one of these must play (alves adriano)
      6. more shots = more goals.
      7. xavi / cesc/ alves can shoot from outside to pull the defence out
      give your opinion…
this is the squad that got us where we are in the past years. I trust them completely
for all who trash pep & messi : you got no respect for 2 geniuses that got us this far…

  8. ajiboye says:

im compelled to lash PEp but i think he has other plans.he started xperimeting even b4 injury came benching villa and pedro 4 adriano n alves on d wing,he had al d time to stop experimenting but he didnt.resting xavi at some points makes sense but resting him 2ce afta 1Game is hilarious.I wonder what gud of not resting messi w il do the team. What has CESC don to warrant a rest at just 24?…Pep has other plans 4d team.Just wish its d best

  9. Tirasus says:

I'm not going to talk about the referee even if I want to. We didn't play well either, at the end of the day, so let's get on with it, and on to Leverkusen!

It is a shame Pedro still wasn't able to replicate his previous form. Keep trying Pedro, we are all behind you.

Pique wasn't the best, no, but I did like seeing his valiant efforts in attack. Again, true fans are behind you Piqué.

It was again, however, just great to see Tello and Cuenca. These boys have some real talent and coped with the pressure 2-0 down so well. I take my hat off….if I was wearing one.

Messi couldn't seem to get into the game at times. Nevermind, he will bounce back.

I was a little perplexed at Sergi Roberto, but he did alright. Nothing overly memorable, but nothing bad, and for what must be his first or second start as a first team-er, so he coped well I think.

Really proud of the youngsters. Tello, Cuenca, Roberto, Thiago, and Dos Santos have performed admirably when called upon.

So there are positives to take from this game.

IF we don't win the league, or any other competition this year, then so be it. We were not invincible and it is not the end of the world. There will be next year. Whatever happens, we should be behind this team.

  10. blaugranaboy says:

yeah pique is terrible hey. only 2 seasons ago he was playing like the best central defender in europe. but since then, he has become terrible we should just sell him and buy someone else. thats the solution. lets forget all the amazing things he has done due to a few month slump. other players never have slumps either, they always play at their highest level, every game for their entire career…..pathetic

  11. Ceska says:

Just watched the game. Extreme and difficult condition for our players but that does not deter Ososuna’s spirit and as much as I want to be fair to Pique, if I have to pick up one bad player last night. Pique was the one.. very poor & lazy!

  12. Stan says:

we might lose the league, but i would still be happiest Barca fan if Real win the league after losing to Barca again. I can always say "Yeah you guys won the year you lost to Barca twice"

  13. ernest says:

its clear REAL MADRID has sought for spiritual intervention(juju) in their quest to dethrone BARCELONA…how cn u always conceed 1st before coming back to win a home match…anything which is NOT from God doesn’t end well..We are all watching..Karma will speak.

  14. Rokky says:

Pep a gud coach but a slow decision maker,d team not doin well at d moment cos dey depends too much on messi nd experimental formation of d tactician, defenders needed in d squad dat ar more faster ll b of more help,we also benefits from refs errors too so lets stop d trash.
