Twelve wins and 1 draw from the opening 13 matches of the 2012/13 La Liga season sees FC Barcelona sitting on 37 points. This near perfection is not only a club record, but now on par with the all-time La Liga record. It was set back in 1991/92 by Real Madrid under the stewardship of Radomir Antić (who later coached FC Barcelona).
On matchday 14, Antić’s side drew with Real Zaragoza, so FC Barcelona has the opportunity this weekend, versus Athletic Bilbao at home, to set the best ever points total after 14 games with a win. The odds are quite favorable too, with FC Barcelona beating Bilbao at the Camp Nou on their last 8 visits with an average score line of 2.5 – 0.5.
Interestingly Real Madrid did not go on to win the league crown in 1992, despite the historic start. FC Barcelona did. So, like Tito Vilanova said Sunday evening, there is still a long way to go.
