Cüneyt Çakir to referee Benfica-Barça

UEFA has announced that Turkish referee Cüneyt Çakir (35) will be in charge of the second Group G Champions League match between Benfica and FC Barcelona on Tuesday.

Barcelona fans will recognize Çakir from last year’s semi-final second leg match against Chelsea (2-2). Çakir played a prominent role in that fixture, sending off John Terry in the 36th minute and awarding Barcelona a penalty in the same match.

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. Or so the saying goes.

Try telling that to any of the players, staff and 977 supporters inside the Miniestadi. There was a deluge in Catalonia today.

Barca went into this match on the back of a four game winning streak and the signs were positive as the Blaugrana forced corner after corner, and attacked at every possible opportunity. It was a real surprise that it took until the 35th minute for the first goal to arrive.

Match Review: Sevilla FC 2-3 FC Barcelona

The match at the Sánchez Pizjuan, even before the start, seemed to be one of the most complicated games for Barça. Memories of last season’s game are still fresh, where Barça did everything to win, but Sevilla stood tough, parked a very well positioned bus, and nothing went in.

This time, however, Sevilla looked a much more frightening side, due to their powerful counter-attack, which had already borne fruit a few weeks ago against Madrid. But once again this season, Barça succeeded against a disciplined side, a team that not only defended well but also exposed Barça’s failures in defense. This season, it seems nothing is stronger than Barça’s willingness to win.

Match Preview: Sevilla FC vs FC Barcelona

Match Preview: Sevilla FC vs FC Barcelona

With this being the last La Liga game before the match against Real Madrid next weekend, the goal for FC Barcelona is to enter that game with the precious 8 point advantage still in hand.  It will be no easy feat however against 5th place Sevilla, still undefeated this season with 3 wins and 2 draws.

One of Sevilla’s victories was of course against Real Madrid two match days ago, on the evening that Mourinho declared that “he did not have a team”.  The Sanchez Pizjuan has been a fortress for the Andalucía side this year, winning 2 from 2.  Tito Vilanova acknowledged in the pre-match media briefs that this stadium is always complicated to visit, and over the years we all remember the frustrating matches in which veteran keeper Palop was unbeatable and Barça succumbed to draws or defeats.

Toni Freixa a new member of the RFEF

Toni Freixa, FC Barcelona spokesman and secretary, has become the newest member of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF), the Spanish Football association.  This is seen as as a bit of a triumph at the club, with President Sandro Rosell going as far as saying it was one of his presedential objectives that FC Barcelona “work within [RFEF] committees so that there are changes”.

On the appointment, Freixa has said: “We can directly express our beliefs on the purpose and function of committees and on the entire disciplinary system of the Federation.  Barça must be part of all the federations in which the club participates”.
