Sergi Roberto scores in Spain 5-1 victory, U-20 World Cup

Already 5-1 by the 32nd minute of play, a flurry of early goals helped earn Spain a full nine points as they head into the next round of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. FC Barcelona B’s Sergi Roberto opened the scoring in the 1st minute, with a hat-trick by Espanyol’s Alvaro Vazquez and a penalty taken by Sergio Canales completing the rout of Australia. Julen Lopetegui’s squad have qualified as the top finishers of Group C, sealing their advancement to the Round of 16 with a 1-5 victory over Australia. On August 10, Spain will face South Korea in the first of the knock-out stages.

It was Sergi Roberto who opened the scoring with an early goal in minute 1, coming from a nice group of passes which the Barça B midfielder completed, after Vazquez set him up, right outside the box. Ex-cantero Dani Pacheco set up the Spain’s second goal, the first for Vazquez on the night. Sergi Roberto’s lob up field turned into an assist as Vazquez struck again (3-0). The Espanyol forward sealed his hat trick from a corner in only the 18th minute.

The Australian side reacted with a ‘goal of honor’ from Bulut, but Canales put away the penalty after Vazquez was pushed in the box to make it 1-5, a scoreline that stayed the same through to the final whistle.

Sergi Roberto had a good game, well deserving the goal and assist, and he played the full 90 minutes. New B team signing Kiko Femenia also played 90 minutes, but had a quieter match on the right wing, though his play was a crucial part of the build-up to Spain’s first goal. Marc Bartra played the first half, and with Spain already 5-1 up, was replaced at the half by Carles Planas, who acted as a center back for the remainder of the match. Cristian Tello was an unused sub on the bench.
