Barça adds 80 youngsters to their football program
Recently published in Catalan paper Sport, writer Martí Perarnau takes a closer look at the literal ins and outs of La Masia, namely the players newly joining FC Barcelona’s youth ranks and those that have decided to leave the Club. Where are the players coming from, what teams will they join, who has made way for these new players, and where will the departing players go next? These are just a few of the questions Perarnau examines, as he explores the ways in which the club is reinforcing their youth system model, while adding new nuances in their formative work to continue growing.
The general structure of the formative football blaugrana remains very similar to last season, with the only significant change of the reduction of team size. Some of the various squads had come to accumulate up to 25 players, which made management more complicated, being a stage in which all the players on the team should be participating in games on a regular basis. To avoid this imbalance, the Club has implemented the “rule of 20″ for the coming season, with the intention that any team under the age of 11 will not have less than 19 players or more than 21.
Logically, the number of players added maintains a certain pyramidal progression: 22 players will arrive to the Benjamín category; 14 to the Alevín; 14 to the Infantil; 10 to the Cadete; and 11 to the Juvenil, besides the additions at both ends of the system: five players to the PreBenjamín and a still uncertain figure for Barça B, probably limited to three or four footballers with two already signed: Cristian Lobato (left winger who can also play as a left back) and Kiko Femenía (able to occupy all of the right wing), a center-forward and perhaps another player also.
59 Catalans
In terms of positions, the newly incorporated players show that 9 goalkeepers, 16 defenders, 30 midfield players, and 25 forwards have arrived, though several of these figures are variable, as the roles of play at Barça differ from other teams and what, originally, could be considered a midfield player might be more accustomed to the defense when viewing the blaugrana; and there are many wingers converted to wing backs. By origin, the majority arrive from other Catalunya clubs: a total of 59 players, coming from 32 different clubs around Catalunya.
From Spain, 15 players will arrive at Barça from eleven different clubs, with five footballers from the Eastern coast and four from Sevilla. As for foreigners, six boys will wear the blaugrana shirt: two Koreans, a Dutchman, a Portuguese, an American and a Japanese youngster.
The Catalan Clubs with the most players joining Barça are: Espanyol (7), Cornellà (6, although two were transferred), Mataró (4), Damm (3) and Calella (3). 75% of the Catalan players that arrive, do so in the youngest categories: the PreBenjamín (born in 2004) through Infantil B (1999). From that age (12-13 years) and up through Barça B, the distribution is very different: 14 Catalans, 15 from the rest of Spain and 4 foreigners. This circumstance is typical in the youth football program: the first circle for finding players in the youngest categories is always Catalunya; the second focuses on the rest of Spain, but only after a minimum age; and the third circle, world wide, is only used for very specific cases, given its logistic complexity.
The price of all these additions has not been revealed by the club, but for the most outstanding cases up to 100,000 euros have been paid for training rights for some of the youth that are recruited.
A very important detail guides the work of collecting youth players for the 21 scouts that Barça has distributed throughout Spain: the search for a very specific profile of players that surpass the technical level of the players who have been dropped from the program.
In this sense, holes in the older categories call for the incorporation of footballers that will complete the teams advancing from the younger ranks (Juvenils and Cadets). Goalkeepers such as Juvenil A’s Miguel Bañuz, José Aurelio Suarez or the Cadet’s Guillermo Lara come to cover some of the gaps in goal. In central defense, Rodrigo Tarín, of a similar profile to Alberto Botía, has arrived to the Cadet level. In the midfield, there is strong belief in Joel Huertas and also Cadet bound Albert Torras, from Espanyol. In the offensive positions, still to be defined, there are three players with potential, pending confirmation: Miguel Ángel Sainz-Maza, a midfielder from Racing wanted by Manchester City; Ecuadorian Joel Valencia, of a similar profile; and Sporting’s Juan Mera, who could start the season with Juvenil A and finish with Barça B. City has already signed Denis Suárez, of Celta, who was bound for Juvenil A; and Málaga has put on hold the arrival of Brahim Abdelkader, although Barça continues to have his father’s signature held in force.
Six foreigners
The six foreign players that arrive at the club belong to five different nationalities. At ten years old, Japanese forward Takefusa Kubo will not live at La Masia, but in a private residence with his mother. Kubo had a trial in the middle of April at the Ciutat Esportiva and convinced the coaches, just like midfielder Ben Lederman, 11 years old, the first American to join Barça. Two Koreans born in 1998 and called Jang and Lee will be incorporated into Infantil A. Both players were spotted playing with the Korean national team and finally accepted places at La Masia after the Danone Cup played in South Africa. A Portuguese and a Dutchman complete the list of new foreign players: in this case, both will join Infantil B, but their contracts are just now nearing completion.
The continuation of the three coaches of the last stages before Barça B (Óscar García and Sergi Barjuán in Juvenil A and B and García Pimienta in Cadet A) guarantees the progression in the football formation of the chosen players and their preparation for professional careers. They are three exacting coaches that next season will have better and more cohesive teams, having reduced the team size to 20 players.
85 Dropped
In the opposite direction, 85 footballers have left or are on the verge of leaving. Some are well known. From Barça B, Víctor Vázquez, Nolito, Edu Oriol, Abraham, Benja and, probably, another five more, have transferred clubs, with a few having buyback options. From Juvenil A, midfielders Pepe Palau (Villarreal C) and Jordi Masó along with forward Etock (Chelsea) have decided to leave the blaugrana. About 10 players are leaving from Juvenil B, three to Espanyol, although Barça has refused to officially confirm the departures from the formative youth levels. From Cadet A, there has been plenty of coverage of the departures of Toral and Bellerín to Arsenal and Pol García Tena to Juve, as well as that of Belana and Navarro to Espanyol and la de Mara to Málaga. In total, 85 footballers have abandoned the blaugrana cantera, with Espanyol the biggest beneficiary of the exits (taking between 8 and 10 of the departed players). Four players from the Eto’o Foundation have been dropped by the Club. In the case of Juvenil’s Gael Etock, the player has secured a move to Chelsea. As for the youngest players (Adamu, Cámara and Mandela), their leaving is in response to new criteria with regard to the boys coming from Cameroon, referring more to age rather than size.
All in all, the Barça B team will contain some 25 players; those of the Juvenil, Cadet, and Infantil will have 20 players each; while the Alevin, Benjamin, and PreBenjamin teams with have an average of 12 children per team.
In total, 253 players will be available for continued growth at Barça, slowly progressing, at La Masia and the Ciutat Esportiva.

I think this is a nice move; so we can always keep our youngsters new and fresh, but Gael Etock was a future star for Barcelona who was gonig to develop.
Etock was not developing as he was expected to, and was outshined in any case by Dongou, Meva and many other of our Cameroonian strikers at all ages. Its not like we will ever be short on stars in the making – 253 players, daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayum. lol
I am really sad for Camara… Everybody are talking about Etock and Dongou but Camara was a great striker. This seaso with the alevin A he scores more than 60 goals!!!!!!
Hopefully these new players are good. Damn, that's a lot of players joining, I hope this is a really good upgrade
Has anyone else ever wondered if there is TOO much talent in La Masia. I mean, what on earth are we going to do? Take center mid, there is Thiago, JDS, Espinosa, Oriol, Rafa, Samper, Eguene, and many more + Busquets and possibly Fabregas. Defo overloaded, and there are definitely going to be more to come with all those players. I really want them all to stay, but I know they cant.
It would be great for La Liga is some of the excess talent could go to teams such as Villareal, Valencia, Sevilla, Atletico, and even Espanyol, since most of them are Catalan. In a few years, I guarantee there will be many famous names in football from Barca's academy, but not playing from us, in Spain and beyond.
Sell them unwanted or unqualified players to other clubs. Barca has been developing many talents. Other clubs are doing the same thing but recent years, Masia been world famous. Barca backroom staff is doing something right. Obviously not all will make it, but the real gems will be kept for Barca's starting 11.
Barcelona's academy is a chance for kids to become footballers. The very best will end up on the first team, and most of them will be trained and developed well enough in our wonderful academy, giving them the chance to build a career.
And also, people have to understand that not all of these kids are that amazing. It seems like we have amazing players in every position, but the truth is, there are only one or two who will be good enough to make it. If any more do, it is a luxury, but it doesn't happen often. Fontas is in the first team, but I have huge doubts as to whether he will ever be good enough to be a starter. Botia is very good, but is he good enough for Barca? Maybe. There a million doubts regarding Bartra and Muniesa, and the rest are too young to judge. Thiago has been promoted, and I am fairly certain he will be good. But I very much doubt whether JDS, Espinosa, Oriol, and Rafa are good enough. The rest are too young. In attack, there isn't anyone immediate, though most experts say Deulofeu has a pretty good chance of making it. The ones I think will make it might not, and vice versa. But either way, not many of them will be good enough for Barca.
the reality is that most of them will leave Barcelona. We hear about someone who's promising from La Masia, but it doesn't directly translate into the next best midfielder or the next best forward does it? it just means that the player has potential to be part of a medal winning team.
From Messi, Pique and Cesc's era, how many actual players from their graduating class (meaning promoted to Barca B ) have actually made the first team? only 4. Messi Pique Pedro Busi
How about even further back? Iniesta is alone at 27 with no other la masia graduating player at a similar age in the first team.
Xavi at 31, Puyol at 33, Valdes at 29. The other La Masia graduate players I know of who are around this age are Mikel Arteta (Everton) and Jose Pepe Reina (Liverpool).
It just comes to show from a massive list of kids who are recruited from all around the world, in reality there are only 3-4 la masia graduates per 3-4 generations who make a permanent first team spot.
One more thing that separates Barca from other clubs is that it trains it's own players, but isn't primarily a selling club. Most other clubs at such level are typically buying clubs who spend crap tons of money buying established players. Although Barcelona does the same, it still sees value in nurturing it's own players and that's what most other big clubs used to ignore.
I don't mean to say that these kids aren't good enough for Barca, because honestly nobody will know until they actually make the team.
"midfielder Ben Lederman, 11 years old, the first American to join Barça."
He's from my state, and I remember reading about him when he was invited for a trial. That was in April-May, and I'm glad to hear that things went well for him! It'll be interesting to see if he can make it up the ranks. I'm proud of my Catalan heritage, but I'm proud of my home country too. Visca el Barca and good luck Ben!
Hopefully there are a couple of gem's in all these players!
two hundred plus players… that's more than enough to fill in half a league's worth of teams. Just imagine now rigorous the selection must be to even get into Barca B!
wow, an american. will be interesting to see how long he lasts. hopefully he does well.
yank huh…..?
Good luck to all of them, especially Ben. I would love to see an American on Barca (or even just Barca B ) . I'm sure that a few will turn out to be real gems.
ot:
I havent watched spain u19 in euro championship but i know that morata(young madridista) has scored hattrick and collect 4 goals in games.
But delofeu hasnt scored till now, why?
We account very much on him,
I dont like that he be under of shadow of morata, sarabia!
Any1 has seen games, how do show he in this games?
I haven't watched any of the spain u19 either, but morata, being the centre forward, is nigh on guaranteed to score often. As long as Deulofeu has a good performance, and helps the team then that matters more than the goals.
Also, last I heard he plays on the right for the NT. If that is the case he won't be able to cut in as easily as he does from the left, so he is less likely to be shooting.
Just some thoughts
Deulofeu is doing great. He has assisted in a few of the goals and has been a constant threat. Remember that Gerard is just 17. He is playing with guys 2 years older than him so he may not be the brightest star, but he is still very important to the team and is not going un-noticed
yeah morata scored 3 but he missed a number of 1-on-1s he shud hv more… delofeu is definitely the most exciting player on field even the commentators said he was the man of the match… he was subbed in both matches they said with the game in the bag the coach wanted to keep him fresh n probably gv others (yup delofeu is 2 yrs younger thn others) a chance to play, which is fair to me… sergi gomez is a monster… he;s so calm at times he played at walking pace… very assuring performance… i can see both making the senior barca n spanish squad in the future… having said tht this u19 squad is full of talent, dunt wanna be arrogant but our young ones hv impressed so far regardless
Deulofeu was defenitely the best player on the field along with Sarabia. Sarabia assisted 3 goals, but deulofeu created a lot more opportunities. If Gerard keeps growing like this, i think he will be world's best player in 5 years!
I've only seen the first 30 minutes of the game, but it became immediatly clear how good Deulofeu is. He was a constant threat to the Serbian defence…okay, to be honest the Serbian defenders were a constant threat for themselves too. There is a highlights video online at footytube and you can see how unorganized they were.
I think being promoted to Barca B is excactly the right thing for Deulofeu at the moment.Getting experience against adult opponents without having too much pressure on him. Maybe he can get some first team minutes in a Copa del Rey match or something.
I love this article…very well done!!!
am curious to see their level at that age
It's always interesting reading when the subject is La Masia, but especially catching when there's so many facts as well. I would love to see the prebenjamins play one day
Mayby a new Xaviesta.
I love barca and la masia
visca barca
Doulefeu is over hyped, I think Ebwelle is a better player than him.
The Dutch player is from Ajax. His name is Bobby Adekanye (11 years old) and was the star of his team together with Justin Kluivert! Really not happy about this. I know clubs buy players this young all the time but I just never thought Barca would do this to Ajax. Lost a little bit of respect for Barca. Apparently his parents were offered jobs so they would move to Barcelona….
