The target: Another Liga and Champions League double

The wind blows the hardest when you’re on top. This adage rings true to every human endeavour and it rings especially true for football. FC Barcelona are currently enjoying the best era since their establishment in 1899, having successfully defended the Liga title against an ultra-competitive Real Madrid and conquered Manchester United at Wembley to bring the Champions League trophy to Barcelona last season. Expecting this amazing team to do anything less would be cynical. If there is one feat Guardiola’s Barca has not performed yet, it is to retain both the Liga and Champions League titles and that surely has to be the aim for this season. Adding the other two trophies Barca are participating in, the Club World Cup and the Copa Del Rey, would be the icing on the cake.

Our thoughts on El Mister

Many say managing a team with such talented players is easy. Well, it is not so by any means. Josep Guardiola was a coach even when he was a footballer – and a brilliant one at that. His understanding of how the possession game should be played to perfection is unparalleled. His tactical understanding is proven through his experimentation with the lineup, most notably using Messi as a false No. 9 and dropping Sergio Busquets back to centre-back. He is constantly motivating and evolving the team to overcome everything that they are up against. Also, he is a great model for the players, especially the younger ones. He is always humble, respectful towards opponents and shuns the limelight. Pep instils in his players that although they may be one of the world’s best teams, they still have to prove it time and again.

Our key man this season

Who else but Lionel Messi? While the squad is full of talent and experience, one cannot deny that the most versatile forward in the game’s modern history is the man who makes the difference. He can score, he can create opportunities for his team-mates and his off-the-ball movement continues to pull opponent defences out of shape. This season, he seems to have worked on his upper-body strength and his free-kicks have improved a lot, too. His ability to score goals as well as assist them will be as important as it has been in past seasons and he will no doubt be ready to up his game yet another notch.

Youngsters to watch watch out for

La Masia’s Martin Montoya (right-back), Marc Bartra (centre-back), Sergi Roberto (attacking midfielder) and Isaac Cuenca (wide forward). All of them should have opportunities to impress this season. However, all eyes will be on the ‘crown jewel’ and newly promoted Thiago Alcantara, who has been at Barcelona since he was 14 and helped Spain win the Under-21 European Championship this summer. Expect him to feature several times, orchestrating play from the midfield. He has a lot to improve still, especially discipline to keep the ball, but he is learning from the best in the business.

A player who must deliver

Cesc Fabregas’ move back to FC Barcelona has arguably been the most protracted transfer saga of all time. Now that the prodigal son is back home, he will be expected to play a key role this season. Difficult as it is to break into the starting XI at Barca, Fabregas has demonstrated an uncanny understanding with his team-mates in the three games in which he has featured so far. While his role initially has been as an impact sub, expect him to grow more and more into the central midfield role. He is an intelligent player who understands the system and will be the one making the runs into the box from midfield as his finishing abilities are top class. Fellow new arrival Alexis Sanchez as well as David Villa will also be feeling the need to contribute to the team.

Our Achilles’ heel

Going into the season with only three specialist central defenders (Puyol, Pique and Abidal) is going to be a gamble. Agreed that Javier Mascherano has been a beast in that position but that leaves the defensive midfield lacking depth. Seydou Keita’s ability to grow into the defensive midfielder position that he has recently been played in will be the key to maintaining that balance. Though cover is available for central defence in the form of Andreu Fontas and Sergio Busquets, it would have been a great relief for the fans if Barca had signed a good back-up defender. However, with Pep’s high risk/high gain plan of renewing our back-line with homegrown players, Fontas, Bartra, Muniesa, and Montoya could be Barca’s future back four.

Fixture we are looking forward to the most

The most awaited fixtures of the season are unarguably the Clasicos against our eternal rivals Real Madrid. While this rivalry goes back ages, it was stoked to unprecedented heights last season. Having four of these high-intensity matches in the space of a couple of weeks was taxing for players in both teams as well as us fans. The mood of those bitter clashes seems to have carried over to this season as well. The two legs of the Spanish Supercopa were exciting games with great football played by both sides. However, the cynical tackle by Marcelo on Cesc at the end and the bench-side brawl that followed left a bitter taste. Let us hope that the tension in the Clasico this season is handled in a more mature manner by both teams. Besides the Clasicos, the most anticipated fixture for us would be against the teams from Manchester, as both United and City have improved a lot and shown early-season promise.

Our toughest opponents will be

Domestically, Real Madrid, who have improved their squad with great buys as well as intense training; Villarreal, who have managed to hold on to Nilmar and Rossi; Valencia and Sevilla, who can always spring a surprise, and finally Malaga under Manuel Pellegrini, who have been most active in the market and have bought great players.

In Europe, Manchester United and Chelsea are looking great and so are Bayern Munich. The Champions League group stage will see us face off against AC Milan, who will prove to be strong opponents. However, it would be a pleasure to see Barcelona take on Borussia Dortmund somewhere along the season. They are an exciting, talented side with amazing players in every position on the pitch.

Person we love to hate

That would be Jose Mourinho. If his antics of last season claiming a conspiracy against himself by Barcelona, UEFA and UNICEF (!) were ridiculous, his behaviour after his side’s loss in the Spanish Supercopa was shameful. His sneaky ‘poke-in-the-eye’ to Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova was behaviour unfit for the coach of a highly successful team like Real Madrid. It is amazing how the vitriol he spews and the mind games he plays only serve to motivate Barça to perform better. Perhaps it is time for another ‘manita’ (a 5-0 scoreline a la November 2010).

Our first choice IX

Goalkeeper: Victor Valdés
Right-back: Dani Alves Centre Back: Carles Puyol Centre Back: Gerard Piqué Left-Back: Éric Abidal
Midfield: Xavi Hernández, Sergio Busquets, Andrés Iniesta
Right-Forward: Pedro Rodriguez “False” 9: Lionel Messi Left-Forward: David Villa

Adriano, Cesc and Sanchez would be the first-choice substitutes.

Our verdict

While this season could be the toughest test yet for Pep Guardiola’s merry men with six trophies to contest and with opponents constantly playing an aggressive, pressing style to counter Barcelona’s keep-ball, the talent and the versatility of the squad is the team’s biggest strength. What was lacking last season was a game-changing substitutes bench and that is something the team possesses now. A task tougher than getting to the top is staying at the top and that will be the toughest challenge for Barca this year.

However, smart squad rotation, the unquestionable talent of the team, the availability of reinforcements in the form of the Barcelona B team and the inspiration provided by the new players could see this Barcelona side conquer every tournament they participate in and reaffirm their status as the best team to ever play the beautiful game. Last season’s four Clasicos have shown that Barca are not the kind of team to crumble under intense pressure or heavy challenges. Other teams take note; Barcelona are ready for battle.

    F… off you throl

  3. barcaland18 says:

I think whenever we lack defenders like we did in this match we should switch to the 3-4-3 formation, how the ball was flowing all over the pitch and the passes were brilliant, the team was very dynamic.

    • Cule XH says:

I think Pep and Tito have everything clear. And i also thinks that when we have Puyol or Pique injuried or both. We can play 3-4-3 in most games. I prefer Sanchez and Pedro as wingers in that system. They work a bit harder than Villa, and are naturally wingers!

And Masherano is playing like a worldclass central defender!

    • intense says:

The reason why Pep didnt want specialist central defenders is exactly what the article in goal.com stated before the season started. Pep wants to further develop our system with ball playing DMs contributing more as CBs. With our system of "false 9s", and "false 10s", the tradtional, one-dimensional CB brute is gradually becoming extinct. It was truly embarrassing to see so-called top CBs Rio and Vidic in the CL final as they didnt know what to do with our style of playing false players. With false 9s and false 10s, in players like Cesc and Messi, I see our starting lineup, a 3-1-3-3, as follows:

      RB: Alves
      CB: Pique
      LB: Abidal
      Sweeper: Busquets
      CM: Xavi
      CM: Iniesta
      False 10: Cesc
      RF: Pedro
      False 9: Messi
      LF: Villa

With Masche, Thiago and Sanchez alternating.

      • Magic says:

        I'm on your side!

      • barcaland18 says:

I agree with u @intense but when C.Puyol is back its really hard to opt for this formation because then we'll have to sacrifice one defender for a midfielder which doesn't seem likely.

        • Thiago 11 says:

When Puyol's back we could have Dani Alves at right back. Pique at centre back and Puyol at left back. That worked well against Real Madrid because Puyol just dominated Ronaldo. Also didn't he used to play at right back. I remember seeing the arsenal vs Barcelona 2006 Cl final and I think he started at right back.

      • rumbero says:

That will most likely be the lineup for most of future matches, my best XI too

  4. Cule XH says:

Yesterday we saw that Pep knows what he is doing!

    Thiago got 90 minutes
    Keita got 90 mintues
    Fabregas played 70 minutes
    Iniesta played 55 minutes
    Xavi 35 minutes
    and Villa played 25 minutes

+ Busquets and Masherano played 90 minutes. Thats how you rotate a team! Alex Ferguson is the master, Almost never have the same team game after game. Next game we could play like this

    Xavi – Busquets – Fabregas

    Villa – Messi – Sanchez

  5. Eto_o9 says:

well I think that we can play 3-4-3 all the time you know with pique, masch and abidal busquets as a DM and iniesta, xavi, cesc with thiago the first choice and playin in copa del rey and in front of course M/V/P or M/V/S or M/P/S !!! now we have a good bench and its a long seazon !

  6. Akkadian says:

Very nice and rational article it mentioned everything I had in mind! Since the article is affiliated with goal.com maybe barca fans should read "why Madrid will win la liga" article because it is totally absurd! Visca el barca!

  7. Magic says:

    Be happy!

  8. ThiaGoalCantara says:

    La Liga + Champions Leauge:

It's gonna be hard to retain both prices, since all opponents will do everything possible to stop us. Everybody knows how Barca plays and that they never change their philosophy for anyone!

    El Mister:

Lots of people say that Pep can't say he's a good coach because he only had results with Barca.. But that's nonsens, because it would put Sr Alex Ferguson in the same situation and that man is the best coach in the world! Pep is a born leader, U could already see that when he was still a player!

    Our key-man:

Leo of course, but nobody should ever underestimate the power of Xavi and Iniesta!! Besides I think a lot of people are still underrating Cesc, who might be the revelation of the season in whole Europe.. He started off fantastic and might surprise everyone!!

    Youngsters:

Thiago of course, but the talent coming from La Masia is unbelievable and there are so many players who can become the next Blaugrana-stars in the coming years!! (Fantos, Bartra, Montoya, Muniesa, Dos Santos, Espinosa, Roberto, Deulofeu, Rafinha, Dongou, Cuenca and on and on……)

    Player who must deliver:

I have no more doubts that Cesc is going to do very very well, he really fit's in perfectly and it seems that Messi is having a great time playing with him and those to connect fantastically!! The player who still has to prove himself a little is Alexis! He did play very good the games he played and also scored his first goal!!

    Achilles-heel:

Defense!!! I thinkBarca could have made a small mistake by not buying a defender this summer!! With Puyol injured most of the time and both him and Anidal are not the youngest anymore, we might get into some problems during the season.. But seen last night, we don't really need more than 1 defender in the starting11!!

    Exciting fixtures:

Of course the Clasico's and the big CL-games!! The draw with Milan is already an exciting one and let's hope there are more to follow!!

    Toughest opponents:

Real Moudrid of course and in Europe: Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea will be the only teams who are able to stop a fit Barca (if they have a little luck)!!

  10. love me barca says:

he has forgoten thiagoal for first choices subs.

    Where are from they?

    • Harshawardhan says:

There can be only 3 first choice subs right? and i thought adriano, cesc and sanchez are the ones.
Btw, me (Harshawardhan) and Faisal are regular writers on totalBarca. If you go and see the goals/the highlights posts. they are always written by me. And even daily news. Faisal (Rakun) on the other hand, writes the match previews.

      • fotobirajesh says:

Harsha, it seems you are keeping Masche away even from your first possible subs.
I think, Masche is going to see even more playing time than last year, this term. Even Keita might see more time.
The way the game ended up yesterday, I dont think yesterdays formation will turn out only as an emergency plan.

        • _Lily says:

I don't think he's saying that Mascherano and Keita won't play. They had to choose three. Adriano for D, Fabregas for M, and Sanchez for F. It seems pretty straightfotward and reasonable to me.

      • love me barca says:

        thanks for ur attention.
I didnt know that u are one of writers of totalbarca.
I see more names of ivich, amanda, allas, doris and others.

  12. thiru says:

i read this article yesterday in goal.com

  13. Yomexy says:

Great presentation from the perpective of the fans. I saw it yesterday on goal.com and i was really overawed with the whole set-up. I think you guys sincerely deserve the recognition. More elevation to follow suit…
Regarding yesterday’s game and the tactics deployed by pep, i was a bit apprehensive but not sceptical vis-a-vis to the formation, it could have backfired when playing three defenders against two lethal and dangerous strikers but the injection of an extra midfielder meant that we kept the ball well. Moreso, the rotational unpredictability and movement of messi, alexis, pedro, fabregas (who seldom intetchanged the false nine role with messi), iniesta meant that the backline of villareal was plunged into a complete conundrum and confusion. The absence of a target man obviously portends a positive sign for us and an ominious one for our opponents va the inflection in movements of our forward line.
Also, some persons are saying la liga is not competitive cos we defeated villreal 5-0, to a reasonable extent, yes. But looking at the last three seasons villreal have gotten good results against us and i never heard any complaint then we totally annihilated them and excuses resurrected. Truth is, the quality possesed by both barca and madrid is quite astronomical which exceeds other clubs, not only in spain but in the world.

  14. LeónDragón dAz says:

how does it feels to find an article of you guys published by goal.com? :D

  15. LeónDragón dAz says:

p.s. REAALLYYY love that the "Person we love to hate" can be seen now by the whole goal.com-community worldwide now !! straight, unvarnished, direct, openly !! two-thumbs-up in the air for that guys !! :D

  16. undercover says:

It is a good read, but how can the list of "the first-choice substitutes" miss Mascherano?

  17. komo says:

wow ! totalbarca is getting more popular. expect to see more troll this season. just like you said before "The wind blows the hardest when you’re on top".

  18. Philadelphia says:

I don’t think the article in goal.com offers anything new to a regular Barca fan. However, I would agree that it is a more than great summary of pretty much all there is to say. Considering the popularity of goal.com, many thanks for publishing it there. On a side note, who gets their news from goal.com and why???????????

As for the subs, there will be lots of variations. with different players being starters and subs, so I don’t think limiting the team to only 11+3 players would be fair to Masch or Thiago.

  19. Douche says:

You sure you sent the right people? What kind of idiot would say it's time for another 5-0?

  20. fitzell snr. says:

it is a long season and every player on the team counts. Not geting a CB has been the plan all along as it is a way of playing total footbal with tota dominance.
Villa has to prove y he shld be on the starting xi. Sometimes he plays as if he’s jelous of the goal scorers. I saw it yesterday as he could have laid a pass to messi for the 6th goal but went for the curl instead by himself.
Alexis is also a gr8 player but has to work on his killer passes nd stability as he tends to pas to oponents nd loses the ball out.
Masch was our best CB as he proved in our home game against arsenal, the clasico nd our F.M AGAINST man u.

  21. KnivesOut says:

Great roundup guys. Will be a real challenge for Pep to keep our thin squad in good shape and ensure everyone is performing at an optimal level throughout the season.

  22. Wasiu1st says:

Hello totalbarca more grease to ur elbow, players play coach did more on subtitude but been expect more from league rival this season

  23. trinibarca.4.life says:
