Messi vs Villa: A made-up phenomenon?
When Villa didn’t play in Prague and wasn’t in the starting 11 against Bilbao, it generated special interest of the media. The attention caused speculations of alleged conflict between El Guaje and Messi, and talks about difficulties which face any striker who would want to play along La Pulga. It’s not easy to be a teammate of Leo Messi, examples are Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Bojan and Ibrahimović.
The substitution of El Guaje at La Catedral against Bilbao was even more important because of formation with Adriano, Xavi and Iniesta who rested the last two games. After the match, David was praised by Pep Guardiola who underlined that he trusts him. “It’s impossible to quarrel with David. He is very good, generous, in football and in life in general. Especially with Leo.” Although, the feeling is that he plays less than in previous seasons. Villa has played in 11 La Liga games. This makes him the 9th player in the overall list of most minutes, and he is the one most subbed by Guardiola. The coach limits the playing time of his players, especially when they have problems.
Top scorer in Sporting, Zaragoza and Valencia, El Guaje transformed into a team-oriented player for the excellence of Barça. He plays more than anyone else without the ball, runs, looks for spaces, attacks, gives depth and, unlike most of his teammates, he dribbles a lot. He maintains a good frequency of opportunities to score both in La Liga and the Champions League. The only problem is not being successful. He scored only 3 goals in the Spanish league and 3 in the CL. Against Athletic, he had 2 great chances, but both were saved by Iraizoz.
He is not lucky in front of the goal, he hits the goalkeeper, the goalposts, sometimes he misses the goal because of anxiety and also because he has less time than others. The goal efficiency is better when Messi plays together with Xavi, Iniesta and Cesc, who also is a ”false 9,” just like La Pulga. In that case Villa plays on the wing, or sits on the bench. The only one with a fixed postition on the pitch is Messi. The others take turns. As Guillem Balague wrote recently “at Barcelona, Lionel Messi is the fulcrum of the attack and his teammates instinctively look to get the ball to the Argentine. For any striker, no matter who you are, that is hard to take. It would be a problem for any number nine, whoever he is, if he plays for Barcelona with Messi in the side“.
Injuries of Afellay, Alexis and Pedro made possible the debut of Cuenca. He plays a similar role to Adriano by playing on the wings and outside the penalty area with a lot of chances to play passes to Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc and Villa. Cesc has five goals in Liga, Xavi has four, and Villa, only three, but he doesn’t complain. Despite his scoring nature and the fact that “Pichichis’ are usually selfish, El Guaje joins the efforts to help the team and Leo Messi (14 goals in La Liga, 5 in the Champions League). This was seen in the last play at San Mamés. As Villa says often “Messi made me a better player.”
For sure, David Villa plays a different role in Barcelona, but let’s just quote what he said some months ago in an interview to El Pais (whole article here). “For me it was a challenge playing in this team, to play differently than I had done all my life and I am satisfied. I have had to adapt to a very different and very characteristic system and in that sense I am also very pleased. I trusted that I would adapt to the club. It is not easy to play in a team as demanding as this.” Asked how is it to play alongside Messi, David said “he is a wonder, a dream. I can always say I was his companion… From the beginning we’ve had a good dynamic. If you’re up and working, it is relatively easy to understand his movements, read him or search for the spaces he’s left. He’s the best player I’ve seen and I doubt you will see someone better. It’s a luxury to play with him.”
Of course, it’s not easy to deal with a superstar in your team, especially when you’re a world class player too. But Villa always underlined that “it must always be about the team. No one is more important than anyone else, it has always been so, Valencia, Zaragoza…We realize that we are all better if Leo is there. We are a team, it’s simple: we must play the game to bring Leo freedom, and then you find the space in which to appear. We work to make this happen, and find spaces.” Playinng in Barcelona means that you need to adjust, sometimes change your style of play. It’s clear that Villa doesn’t score as many goals as in previous teams, but he is not really concerned about it. He underlined many times that he “always trys to do more than just scoring goals. I like to score goals when I have the opportunity, but I also try to do other things on the pitch. I know that the coach also values that type of work.”
We don’t know what happens inside the blaugrana team, we can only guess on the basis of what players say or how they behave on and outside the pitch. Watching and listening to Messi and Villa doesn’t really show anything wrong so far. Recent speculations about bad relations between players are probably just another attempt to destabilize the Barcelona dressing room.

Don't worry Villa!
You'r still the king of offside and the best chicken catcher Barca has ever seen.
We all love you! <3
chicken catcher?
google "david villa chicken catcher" and you will find out
No wonder you get +100 so easily…
Jealous Shekhu my dear?!
If only these sheep…
The media are just trying to unsettle us. In the Athletic game Messi gave a great pass to Villa and almost scored. If I were mad at someone I dont think I would "pass".
ALLASFCB2 made a video about Messi and Villa…
Great how this guy can react on criticism with simple video-material!!
I loved the "Messi goals with head" and "Messi goals with right-foot"!!!

(TB should post this video on the front page)
too bad it was taken down! some people cant take this glory!
So excited for Internationals tomorrow! VamosArgentina. No injures plz :/
The Best article for those who argue that Cristiano is the most complete player. Sid Lowe of course : http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/sid…
CR is complete…a complete twat.
I still don't understand why I so few people see that C.Ronaldo scores that majority of his goals against shit competition while Messi scores in big games.
C.Ronaldo can score 50 goals but when you look at how he plays against tough competition he is like 1/2 the player. Look at last years CL campaign. Messi played around 1100 minutes scored 12 goals, C.Ronaldo played 1070 minutes scored 6 goals. The guy is a flop when it comes to big games. I could care less he can score tons on the likes of Osasuna. He is a flop everywhere else.
There is no comparison and these journalists always fail to mention the importance of where the goal is scored. It would be interesting to look over last years results between the 2 and compare when their goals were scored, I am almost positive quite a few/majority of the goals scored by C.Ronaldo happened when RM was already leading by multiple goals and that his scores meant nothing for the team. How he gets praise for that is beyond me. He is an above average player that is it.
he also gets ALOT of penalties.
messi plays against the same shit teams lol…
didn't ronaldo also score against us lol….best for you to shut up..than trying to fight a losing argument.
You have to get real…ronaldo demolished pretty much every epl team..sometimes winning games single handedly
Messi is the best..if not not best of all time
i also think ronaldo is fantastic and great and is deserving of worlds #2
Dont try to use the stupid penalty argument..its one thing to get a penalty another thing to score it.
You are not a football fan if you think ronaldo is average.. you have even got to be kidding me.
Every commentator know and says Messi is the best..they know the man the follows c.ronaldo.
As much as i love barca.. i put my bias away for football; so should you.
Another thing is to score it? haha
Yes, you could get unlucky and miss, but it's as if you're implying penalties are hard to make? What? Would you like the ball to be EVEN closer to the net?
C.Ronaldo scored once off the header in the copa del ray, once on a penalty during the RM La Liga home leg, and once during the Spanish super cup. During that period he played 6 games against Barca. Want to compare what Messi did in those games?
You are the typical idiot that gets mesmerized by his terrible step overs and think that makes him good. He goes from scoring hat-tricks non stop against the low teams to being a shadow of his former self. Sure Messi scores tons of goals against the terrible teams, but then he mans up and destroys the likes of RM, Man Utd, Arsenal, other quality teams.
Also I like that you mention how C.Ronaldo demolished teams in the EPL, sad that in order for people to prove C.Ronaldo is good they have to go back 3+ years in the past.
They guy is above average. In terms of how much overall benefit he brings to a team, I will take a 100% and healthy Higuain over him.
how am i comparing all i have said is that ronaldo is also good…i never said he was better than messi in anyway
he is above average..how come both Messi and Inesita say he is one of the best..but according to you he is above average
Because Barca players aren't going to say anything bad about others.
by the way 12 goals is amazing
but to say 6 goals is nothing is quite stupid.
It's not stupid at all. Specially for somebody like Ronaldo who's used to scoring a lot more.
6 goals for the so called #2 player in the world who is compared and said to be an inch from Messi is pathetic.
Look at their overall CL goal sheet. That is the best way to analyze a player since it looks at high demand games. Messi played way less, scored way more. 18 goals in knockout stages, tied for first with Raul, 12 for C.Ronaldo.
Like I said and will always say, since facts back up my argument, C.Ronaldo is a dud in high pressure games,
Including and Ever since the 08-09 CL FINAL, CR has never showed up to big games…
And yet he is somehow the #2 player in the world from scoring 90% of his goals against low ranking teams.
my lord..why do you bash the guy….geeze
messi is the best..but seriously ..-_-
I think most people love to bash CR because of his attitude and lack of humbleness. As long as he fails to act down to earth and humble as Messi does, they will respond by refusing to recognize whatever good qualities he's got. The same could also be said about Mourinho.
so wait ..we bash personality instead of football…
but seriously C ROnaldo is asshole…..thats the fact, and you also asshole
Fuck off madridista and stop using Xavi's name
Why is there an article about CR here when I believe this thread is supposed to highlight the dynamic between Villa and Messi?
cristiana is a good player…but he cant tie iniesta's shoelace…much less the messiah
I hate the title. Another title to stir up controversy. I know, I know people should read the entire article but the truth is not everyone does. This is what keeps this baseless rumor going..and I'm surprised its still going. I'm surprised there are more and more articles looking into it. For me its just creating a big thing out of a false rumor some idle person decided to start. I know its int'l break and people are trying to find something to keep them occupied (newswise) but I hate when issues like these are blown out of proportion. I think we should stop giving so much attention to it.
Thats just my opinion though. In no way am I saying this is a bad article by totalBarca..its just not one of MY fave topics. For the record if you have not figured out by now, in NO WAY do I believe in a so called rift between two of the nicest players in the squad and in general.
Its more unsettling I guess.
That's the point of the title. No one would read it if it had a different name let's say "Messi and Villa are friends =)". What do you think this is? 5 year old play pen? Great title, great article. The title fits perfectly with the article.
that argument might work on goal.com, but remember, everyone here are total barca-freaks
i wouldn't mind reading about how good friends messi and villa are, just as i dont mind reading about the different haircuts of random barca players..
have a great day, fellow cules! im off to watch two and a half men
Well obviously the title changed after I said what I said. Before it was just Messi vs Villa.
Next time read what I wrote before giving me a lecture. I don't expect the title to be Messi and Villa are friends. Where in my post did I say that? I still stand by MY opinion.
I swear the people here a gossip fiends. I dont care how many thumbs up or thumbs down I get.

FC barcelona are getting bids from chelsea, manchester city and liverpool..villa is leaving in january or next summer sources said the fall out is pretty big between the 2..i hope it is not true
Xavi: "Villa is suffering…"
Wasn't it CESC?
Villa is an incredible player and has done a lot to adjust to the Barca way of playing and done well at it. However if he converted half of the chances he's missed or hit at the goalie, i don't think all this talk will be coming up. I would sympathise with him if he wasn't getting the passes or the golden chances to score but, between last yr and this yr he's missed a at least 10 sure goals. I think he's more anxious to score that when he gets the chance he fluffs it. Yes Messi is the main player so most likely all the play goes through him. Pep has tried to play Messi on the wing with Villa in the middle and it didn't work out coz we ended up drawing at least two of those matches. I don't see what the problem is or if there is one coz when he signed up he knew what the deal was and was happy with the arrangement in the beginning, so what's changed?
Actually Villa is a lil bit pissed off with Messi, because Messi always b!tching to him everytime he tries to take a shot.
Goal competition with CR7 has made Messi little bit individualistic and selfish.
I thought so. Villa didn't even celebrate Messi goal vs Racing. This is where the issue comes up.
I feel Messi is being too selfish recently and though he is better than Villa doesn't mean he gets 99% of all scoring opportunities given fc barca believes in teamplay goals
we have to be rational and logical about this matter. currently its only messi who is been scoring because he switched from left to centre. i use to think real madrid use to play for ronaldo, but when u think about it u c that barca plays for messi even more.when ibra was here, he was playing so out of position. same goes to villa, henry and bojan. ok, for sure all these players mentioned are not even as good as messi, but when u think about it they should play a bit more central.for instance if you look at the situation in madrid, they have ronaldo who scores for fun (just like messi), but then they have benzema and higuain who contribute massively. villa on his day is or at least was better both of them but he is playing so out of position that he barely gets a chance. for barca being this much dependent on just one player is not good. it is a very sensitive subject, because when messi plays central he gets involved in the game, and his killer ball is just in the par with xavi. but on th contrary he gives the ball away at least 3 times more than xavi and inesta. i think messi shouldn't be given THIS MUCH freedom, so others get involve a bit more, by scoring and creating more and barca doesn't become so dependent on him,
what r you taking about messi has been play center from villa arrived!!! we need to start taking about villa missing his CHANCES !!! cuz villa is getting chance to score but he is missing them and y would we take messi out of the middle and put him on the wing where we all knw what he is going to do and that is come inside that way he will be mark when he is playing in the middle u don't knw what he is going to do he may pass r dribble but anyway villa is fine once these international r over we will be clicking like we knw we should
also, not every player are capable of playing in such small areas as barca has been forced to lately.. messi and iniesta are propably the best in the world in doing this. villa will show just how good a striker he is, as soon as we get an opponent who has some sort of self-respect and at least attempts to win the game…
lol just read on barcastuff that we signed neymar for 15 million dollars for him to come in 2014 ….sigh im so hoping this isnt true
think about cuenca and pedro
i heard it was 15 million for us to be the first club to talk to him in 2014..LOL
Terrible article.
Poorly written.
Barely readable.
… Why in the world are you explaining every extraneous detail to us, who all well aware of his past/his new role/what's he done/what he's capable of …
Everyone's entitled to express their opinion but this is a free website that is fantastic. I don't agree with every article and certain contributors suit my style better but come on man…if you're a troll then kindly buzz off. If you're not, say it a little more respectfully please. On topic…Messi and Villa are top-class pros and human nature and pride crops up a little on every team but they look to be handling it perfectly. Villa has been a real pro and an incredible addition to our team.
No, I'm not a troll. I'm a cule.
You're right. That was harsh criticism. Apologies on that.
… I'll just leave it at – I don't understand the idea behind explaining to us (who know Villa very well) all that back-story. It felt unnecessary. And it made the article drag more than flow.
I hope that's more constructive.
Fortunately, that is your opinion. I thought the article was informative, yes a majority of it we already knew, but hey so what? That's part of being a fan, you cannot always get new infomtions every day!

I honestly think dat this is just a ploy to unsettle da team.I mean even tumblr bitches have started their own stupid rumour,”Xavilla had a fight and they are ignoring each other”.STUPID,STUPID,STUPID.People should get a life and stop making up stories.
You can always google that. Don't be lazy.
Actually, for the past 6 months I have been frustrated with Villa. He's been wasting too many chances.
David Villa, quite possibly my favorite Barca player after Iniesta. Sorry to many messi fans here. Anyway, did you guys see how well Villa performed in the Hospitat game and the game against England. He played great and tried to take shots as accurately as possible. But luck is just not coming his way of late or has not been coming for quite some time. He even missed the target after he successfully rounded Joe Hart after a through ball from one of spain's genius midfielders. I really think we should all believe in him and know that he was, is and will be an incredible world class striker. It is just this weird thing in football, called form. Once he gets it back, trust me, he will be 20 times more lethal than higuain and 50 times more deadly than benzema. Come on guys, it is DAVID VILLA we are tlaking about here. Lets give him peace and I am sure whatever is happening between him and messi will be resolved with noone getting hurt as long as the media stops f***ing around with their names on papers and all around internet. Just hope Pep is patient enough and know his technical ability, positioning, dragging defenders out of position, dribbling, long shots and backheels and so much more are contributing to our success even without people noticing.
Great point. Villa seems more prone to scoring droughts than others. He's either on fire or worthless. The good thing is, the droughts always end, and like you said, he'll be back!
Its pure BS, villa has had a little muscle trouble. Thats why he cudnt start tha game.
Only idiots think messi is selfish, he’s always trying 2 find a killer pass – i even think he has tha highest or 2nd highest assits in our team, ‘thats very selfish’
I don't believe that Messi is selfish, but I do believe that a lot of the attacking play is centered around Messi.
In fact, not only is the attacking play centered around Messi, but a lot of the movements are centered around Messi receiving the ball deep and then trying to take defenders on. I don't think this is a bad option at all, but it definitely highlights our dependency on him as the focal point of our attack. The stats just attest to that.
Villa was brought to the team to spread the defense wide, just as Pedro used to, but now that happens a lot less frequently simply because it's easier to adapt when you know that both Villa and Pedro are looking to square it to Messi.
I honestly hope that Villa isn't having any problems with Messi for two reasons. The first is that I want to see Villa succeed here in FCB. Second, and more importantly, I don't want to see Messi as the kind of player who wants people to adapt around him but never tries to adapt to his surroundings. I understand that there are some players that you build the team around, but hasn't Pep once said that noone should be bigger than the club?
Its not about "Messi or Villa' ..It is about "Messi and Villa".. Both of them are different players. Messi is among the best players ever.. with abilities transcending lethality in front of goal. He has the ability to create, to take on defenders (emphasis on the plural), has possibly the best ever "on the ball" ability and many all round skills. Villa's greatest asset is that he has a great sense of anticipation and is among the most lethal strikers in Europe ever. He cannot however take on defenders and that limits him in comparison to Messi. The question therefore is how do both of maximise each other and the other's potential and win it for Barca.
Thus far, Villa has done well with his work rate and has blended well with Barca. His lethality has taken a fall, but only a fall for his standards. He has adjusted well from the left inside forward position and has combined well with Messi but his finishing has lacked the past month or so. That is the concern. Considering his past record, that should not be a major concern as eventually he will be hitting the target.
As for Messi, I think while his performance this season has been stupendous and he has added yet another dimension in his combination play with Fabregas, his use of the False 9 to create for Villa in particular has been a bit lacking (emphasis on bit). Once Messi does what he did for Villa last season in full flow, all these stupid rumors about a drift between them will be shut up.
I am actually more concerned about Pedro. He has completely been out of form and is now injured. His replacement Sanchez has also suffered from injury (not to mention Afellay's injury) and that has what has hurt Barca very badly. Cuenca is a decent balm but Barca (and Spain) need Pedro back at full tilt. So too with Sanchez
Thank you, I think you are the only one who posted a comment that’s true. Allow me to add a bit
Villa has scored 20+ goals for the last 10 seasons! he is the top scorer for Spain and if ppl choose to take anything away from his ability, they just cant deny his stats. He is prolific, period.
Lionel Messi is the best player in the world. Ronaldois the 2nd best. Do ppl actually believe that teams “WON’T” be built around players like that??? This is professional football and coaches are practical. If they want to win, they have to have a focal point. Even players like Xavi,Iniesta and Villa have said the same. they know that the team has to focus on messi and messi in turn has been coached(since the day he joined Barca) to play for the team as much as possible without reducing his effectiveness(ala messi in Argentina, wherein he is expected to do everything and with alll those chances(and space) he creates, players dont convert).
The question is not whether messi is selfish or not, whether the focus is on him or not. The reason this team is this great is cause Pep and co have managed to come up with a way to make Messi the only 2 time balon d’or winner in the history of the sport who is soooo selfless.
As mentioned by somebody above, villa has been off form for the last month or so but that doesnt mean he hasnt had chances. Pedro the same(although he is scarily out of form)…once they do start scoring(which they will) then we can start sharing the goals between the top 3…untill then Messi being Messi is carrying the team to a large extent(something that Ronaldo isnt as good as doing cause he does have a tendency to disappear and if there is a one factor that makes a difference between him and messi is how consistent Ronaldo is…compared to Messi who week in and out can be depended on to either assist or score, even if it is one goal and not a hatrick so as to save points..check Bilbao)
Messi is d key of fcbarca, villa don’t accuse ‘urself bcoz of ‘ur goal scarcity, you wll of course resume and centralize onto d scoreline in d nou camp against ‘ur former club on saturday, i wish ‘u d name of our president Goodluck. Imrana I. Kero R/Tsamiya Daura 08039506949.
A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word "I" when you're in a group makes things complicated. ~Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999
That sorta sums it up doesn't it
Ot: does anyone know when Argentina plays today?
Concerning Messi and Villa, my best moment is Messi's reaction when David Villa scored in the CL Final. He got down on his knees and started waving his arms wildly. It is good to see that video when such stupid rumours start to crop up.
Allas, i want to thank you for your efforts in making the videos here on totalbarca.com.They are really exquisite. If one spends a couple of days on youtube, you can get bored of watching Messi's videos because most of them use the same clips. But here on totalbarca the videos are always interesting like "drop the shoulder", "sidefoot",etc.I want to congratulate u for your great work.
I have one request. Can you make a video where other players' reactions are highlighted when someone scores a goal.It would be very interesting.Like Dani Alves' reaction when Messi scored in The Final. He ran after Messi and he also tried to kick the microphones like Leo but got entangled in the wires.Really epic. Then during the Supecopa also,Dani shook the whole camera while celebrating a goal.I am sure you can find many more such interesting reactions. Please consider this request.
This is exactly what I was going to say. Messi's reaction to that goal was amazing. I've watched it over and over to see his celebration rather than the goal itself. There's no doubt Messi is a team player, and it's crazy for people to question that.
U can try to twist is anyway u want but when u start Adriano and Cuenca and sit a fit David Villa that is the 2nd leading scorer in your team there has to be a problem. I love Leo but Barca can't succede if players that aren't getting along with him personnaly are benched. The intrest of the team come before any particular player. For the CL game away to Viktoria Plzen i was shocked and furious that Villa wasn't even on the BENCH!! after making the trip.
Pep needs to grow a pair and start his best 11 regardless of who Leo is getting along with because the only way we'll continue to be successful is if the team plays well not just Leo and no team performs at their best when ur fearful of crossing paths with ur own teamate.
And how do you know that Villa was fit?
I could have sworn I heard from Pep's own mouth that he had calf discomfort…
Hmm..are you in the Physio staff?
true fans never doubt!
They can try to unsettle Barca, and they already are trying, but they are trying to do something that will NEVER happen. They can try, but they (the media) should be ready to face failure.

Thanks Doris for this piece that recognizes Villa's work, sacrifices and good attitude for Barça. More importantly, thanks for promoting unity rather than antagonism between our two forwards! WE ARE A TEAM!!! VISCA BARÇA!!!
