FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011 Special: Dani Alves, more than a defender

FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011 Special: Dani Alves, more than a defender

In a special eight part series, totalBarça will feature each of the FC Barcelona nominees from the 23-man shortlist for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or. From November 12th through December 2nd, a different contributor will present a nominee and argue for why he should win this year’s prestigious award before the announcement of the final three contenders on December 5th. Roberto Curtis kicked off the series with Cesc Fàbregas, but now Ivich will attest to why this year’s accolade should go to a defender by the name of Dani Alves.

When Messi doesn’t perform as well for Argentina as he does regularly with Barça, many reason that he isn’t the same without Xavi and Iniesta by his side. Fair enough. But I’d like to say that there is another player who Messi sorely misses: Daniel Alves. The partnership and the growing friendship between the 24-year-old Argentine forward and the 28-year-old Brazilian defender has been a key ingredient in the success the club has enjoyed in the last three-and-a half years. Don’t believe me? You’ll believe Allas, right

It’s almost impossible to envision Guardiola’s gifted players without Alves, one of the biggest and most often overlooked stars. Alves gave 20 assists last season in all competitions. He was second only to Messi in the league in that department. In addition to that, he scored four goals, one of them this stunner. And lest you forget, he’s the club’s right back. Or is he? For Guardiola has even played him on the right wing.

Football is also a numbers game, for they never lie. To see the brilliance of Alves last season, just look at the stats here which compare him to others in his position in the league. Done with the figures. Now let’s highlight some of his many attributes.

Alves is hardworking; the man just doesn’t stop running and even tiring. It’s like he is on fourth gear always. He can score a goal from a distance, an ability that not many of his teammates possess. He is one of those rare defenders, the sort who enjoys attacking and gives nightmares to the very players who play in his position. Simply put, Alves any day prefers to run towards the opponent’s goalkeeper rather than stay close and offer support to Valdés.

Not that he won’t be there to help the defenders. For if Guardiola tells him, ‘Dani, today, you will have to forsake your offense to take care of Ronaldo,’ unlike a few footballers who prefer to run through red lights in their Ferrari, Alves actually listens and does the job. In fact, he will smile and do a terrific job.

As if he isn’t a quality player, Alves is also a charismatic presence on the field and a bundle of joy in the dressing room. That infectious smile of his is one of the many signs that he couldn’t be happier anywhere else but on the football pitch. Like many Brazilians, Alves is good with his feet, not just when it comes to football, but even when it comes to doing a jig. Could there be a more colourful personality in football?

It is not easy to replace Maicon, but Alves has made the right back position his own in the Brazil national team. If Brazil are to win the World Cup at home in 2014, it’s not just Neymar, but even Alves who will have to be in top notch form. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he is the best defender in his position in the game as of now.

Forwards, and occasionally midfielders, walk away with the big prizes. But behind every successful forward is a determined and disciplined defender. And this defender even happens to score a few goals and give many assists. So why not give it to Alves. It’ll be great to see a defender in the top three and no one can be as deserving as Alves, who like Xavi, has been consistently good for the last three years. I, for one, cannot wait to see him in Switzerland for the gala. What will he wear? Will he do a small samba routine? Imagine the possibilities.

Dani Alves is one of the most special in history of football.
There wasn't many full back who attacked better from most of the wingers,
      And also exellent in defense!

  3. Thiago says:

    • TUQINATOR says:

forgot about cesc and alexis?? But alves is the MOST SKILLED PERSON AT WHAT HE DOES!!!!

      • tsbarca says:

Nope i didnt forget about Cesc or Alexis, but Alves' role is one of the most important parts of this Barca(Pep's Barca) and our game wouldn't work nearly as well without him.My comment was not based on high profile signings,it was based on the importance to the team.

OT,there was a a documentary dubbed "Messi Integrale" shown on French TV two days ago.It chronicled from his humble beginnings to his rise to stardom.Though it's in French, you might just try to catch part 1 & 3.I loved it !………………….. .http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmbhns_messi-l-integrale-part3_sport?ralg=behavior-meta2

    Great article Ivich! Well written!

  9. Frank says:

    Best Right back for Barca.

  10. Chicago Seguidor says:

Alves & the Barça backline OWNED Chicharito in that Champions League final. He was caught by the offisides trap like 4 or 5 times, and with the way the midfield denied him service, he was completely ineffective in Wembley.

  11. AniBarca says:

We should have a caption contest for that picture of Messi and Dani on the jet ski!!

  12. _Titi_ says:

Hes a beast. The guy never gets tired. He is as essential to this barca as Iniesta/Pique/Puyol etc are. and one of the reasons for our success. Still jizzing over his goal against Mallorca. Took that shot like a boss!

  13. nia says:

He earned my full respect when he kept CR quiet during the Super copa and that was his 3rd match back after no preseason and was just on vacation a few days earlier. He has the stamina of a work horse.:p. The thing i like the most about him is his character, he's always happy, infact too happy sometimes but, i love hime anyways.

  14. efcmentor says:

Dani is a living beast. For me best signing in barca history. His DNA must be the same with horse.Plz somebody should tell Pep to sign Mat Hummels in january. He will surpass Puyol if he signs for barca. His movement and fine tackle runs me mad.

  15. TUQINATOR says:

Barca is the best team in thw world, Messi is the best forward, xavi the best play maker and ALVES THE BEST AT WHAT HE DOES:D

  16. Muhamed says:

If you have to find a replacement for alves, who would it be? I cant find any other player that is better.

  17. LinkoNs says:

Alves is a beast and the best RB in the world by far

  18. Zala says:

OMG. This is the best article EVER. Really you couldn't put it better than that. Thanks for this. Alves is my favourite player and everyone's making fun of me because of it and this article is exactly what I tell them when they start mocking me.
It would be a dream come true if he won, or even if he was one of the best three. But even if he doesn't win or anything, he will forever be my favourite player. He is just the best in every way.

  19. Hann says:

Great recognition for such a valuable, and somehow overlooked player. Only on this team would someone with his skill not be considered one of the best!

  20. Haneen says:

Dani is definitely an important player for Barca and not easily replaced. So happy he reached the list. All luck for him.

  21. nicky_sambua says:

Great article. For me his signing as well as Messi's injury free football were the keys to Guardiola's success. As Sid Lowe once, this could well be the second best player in the world

I think Messi secretly wants to be a bad boy, He likes "bad boy" friends like Eto,Ronaldinho and Alves…People like Iniesta and xavi probably bore him.

  24. Alvesisfunny says:
