Cruyff’s Corner: ‘Mou’ should train for a ‘9 against 11’ game

Cruyff’s Corner: ‘Mou’ should train for a ‘9 against 11’ game

The following is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in ‘El Periodico’.  The original can be found here.

Johan Cruyff’s key points.

The first Clasico showed us how much fear Mourinho has for Barca, but he is ready with his [usual] armoury [of excuses] to divert attention away from it so as not to talk about the football.

Mourinho’s lineup is the biggest compliment he can give Barca. To be playing at home with seven defenders is a sign that he must be very afraid. In their day, the Bernabeu would usually not allow this kind of approach to be taken by their coach, even if it means winning them the League. That is, at least, until today. Capello can attest to that.

Full of fear but always ready. That is how Mourinho is. The press conference before the game served as prelude for him to make his ‘justification’ after the Clasico. Selectively choosing what questions to respond, he keeps on reverting to the ‘I’m with 10, they’re always with 11’ speech without having to explain why he had fielded so many defenders. Is anyone annoyed by his attitude? For some it does but not for some others. And in that division he found the cover he can use to talk about everything except football.

Mourinho is a coach [hell-bent] on titles, not football. Or to put it in another way, not a football coach the way we understand how the sport is played as a spectacle or entertainment for those who see it, be it live or at home. Nevertheless it also managed to [inadvertently] help Barca… alot. If the Blancos coach was able to come out with what he got at the Bernabeu, he is not going to be able to do the same again at the Mestalla with only one [final] game to play, and a title at stake. For Guardiola and his players would have been forewarned. And while always being faithful to their style, they [know they] will have to improve [on their game].

Dressing up as a small team

Mourinho said he always trains with a ‘10 against 11’ game-plan whenever he has had to face the Blaugranas. If so, then it would do Barca some good if they are to train and develop a ‘11 against 10’ game-plan. For two reasons: One, if Madrid still insist on playing like a small inferior team, insisting on playing at the back, giving up the pitch, the ball, and all the initiative to Barca, then it is only natural that one of them will get his marching orders again. If I am Mourinho, I would train not for a ‘10 against 11’ but a ‘9 against 11’ game-plan for if Pepe is to play in the same position, with the same kind of role, repeating the same kind of performance, the Brazilian-born Portuguese is certain not to finish the game.

The Madrid-Barca game reminded me a lot of the Netherlands and Spain final from the last World Cup. That day, to my shame, Holland players dedicated themselves more to break up than to play football. And so it went. Defeated and leaving a very bad image for the world to see. What is interesting is that the same people [Madrid press] who are now applauding the tactics used by Mourinho with Madrid – a very good Madrid side with a wealth of talent – were angry with the approach taken by the Dutch that day, and rightly so.

The second reason, as in the case of Barcelona, train and perfect their ‘11 against 10’ strategy. That is because it is not acceptable when a rival, with one less player, was able to create more chances than they were. Obviously something was wrong. Basically it is down to two things. One, in their head, subconsciously, they had assumed that down 0-1 and with one less, Madrid is left for dead. And they took their foot off the pedal, upfront and at the back. And two, for the rival, it is exactly the opposite, with everyone giving a little more. The solution? Simple, but effective: the ball, always playing it a little quicker, no matter how bad the pitch, and of positioning, as they would against 11 but a few meters back, no more, and looking for the one-on-one encounter all over the entire pitch, doing so until they can make use of their numerical superiority.

Superiority, that by making the opponents moving back and forth, emphasizing on the one-on-one, is sure to translate into spaces, and then yes, their numerical advantage will count. If that happened on Saturday they would have been able to react more forcefully than a team playing with one less. It is their fault rather than their opponent’s virtue. In the first Clasico, at the Camp Nou, whether they believe it or not, Real Madrid thought they were of the same quality as Guardiola’s team, they were utterly defeated 5-0.

Taking a step towards the title

Now, having adapted themselves to Barca’s game, from their offensive game to the endless tackles intended on stopping the opponent’s strengths rather than to enhance their own, Madrid managed a draw, and a thank you note from them. Coming from where they came from, the 5-0, and that other 5-0 (Guardiola’s Barca victories over Real Madrid in the last three years), the draw may not seem much but it is, [in essence a] big [deal].

What is perfect is the eight point advantage Barca has in the league with one less game [towards the end]. Sure it was not Barca’s best game of the year but even so, with the faithfully [ugly] approach taken by Mourinho all season long, the Blaugranas ended tying up the match and taking another step towards the title that, once and for all, proves who is the best and who is not.

  3. Jamaican_Cule says:

I'm just wondering why so far no one has told Mou that the last time his team played for over 90 minutes with 11 against Barcelona, they were losing 5-0. His teams seem to work better with 10.

The man is a damn legend! Love it when he says '' The solution? Everything the man says comes out right haha =)

  5. Lotte says:

Excellently put! The whole article! Long live Cryuff!

  6. Lotte says:

Exactly! Why is he whining about playing 10 to 11 then? Because he can't help himself. He's a cry baby.

    why all black??

Nice comments by Cruyff – he exposes little Mou for what he really is!

  10. CanteraKid says:

"When you play on the counter, you admit the opponent is superior."

This is not only false, but also naive.
The Invincible Arsenal, ManU in 2008, Valencia in 2003
those are not teams that admit inferiority. They are champions

Counter attacking football is not about parking the bus because you are weaker on the ball than the opponent. The idea is to invite pressure in your own half, let the opponent raise their defensive line and then utilize the space created in behind. This suits teams with fast and skillful players very well

I hope this makes Mourinho open up and fall down for another manita

  13. mateo9 says:

Cruyff and Di Stefano are right, Mourinho is a chicken to use these kind of tactics with quality players like Ozil, Kaka, Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, Alonso, Khedira, Benzema, etc.
How much did they pay for these players, it's an insult to them to let them play as if they don't know how to play football.
But if Mourinho wins, most people, Mourinho himself first, will say what a fantastic coach he is.

  14. _Lily says:

Parking the bus is irritating, but somewhat understandable.

However, many of the negative comments about Mourinho have a lot more to do with his mind games, complaining about nothing, and the fact that some of his guys played like brutes than the fact that he parked the bus. If that was all, fewer people would be angry, I think.

  15. gonzalo says:

not only that, he was the coach when guardiola played in the bluagrana. no wonder pep was able to upgrade cruyff's total football to give us tiki-taka

  16. David says:

Good solution! However, I believe Messi would nutmeg somebody in stoppage time for the goal and the win…

  17. David says:

    Painfully simple, isn't it?

Mou's idiocy proves that it isn't what you say–because what he says is insulting to the intelligence–but how loud and how often you say it.

  18. nia says:

oh, i meant for next season.

  19. Tony says:

I dont think thats true barca will not wear black jersey for the final ..it will be our home kit….

  20. buj says:

If it was next season, I would not flinch at the idea of promoting Tito as head coach.

  21. Barca says:

    |That's why we have to make sure he wins absolutely nothing.

  22. Joker says:

They can't do that. Pinto is too good with penalties.

  23. Dizzy says:

This is by far the best article I have ever read… Thank you Cruff…. You have shown the world why Madrid football is killing the game for this generation…. If Di Stefano a football legend from Madrid can admit that Madrid is not playing proper football..Then Mou could may as well leave…. In my opinion, Mou brings results, but the teams he has coached before Madrid all lost their style of play after he lives the teams… For example.. Inter Milan… They should have been knocked out by Bayern, their football was disappointing…. M telling you once Mou leaves Madrid… They going to fall in the rankings…. The Madrid style of play back when Roberto Carlos, Beckham played was very impressive.. Today it gone… Its Barca time to play…. I hope Pep is using this article to master a plan for Mou’s pack the bus syndrome…. We going to need it… He wants to play us like he did with Inter last year… Hustle a score at the Bernabeu and pack the bus at Nou camp, for the UCL… Thats what he is preparing for….
Sir Cruff could you also please highlight the lack of professionalism for the Madrid supporters… Why do they laser our players? With all those lasers, we could have lost concentration…..

  24. skanjos says:

mind games…… when pep says madrid is the favorite or they have the best team in the world ,is just being humble and when mourinho doesnt make even a comment because his comments would be misprinted by the press is mind games?
every coach speak their mind before and after the game, sometimes(most of the times) their opinion is biased (like the fans opinions),the words mind games are overused these days…

also i read more bashfull comments about the way madrid played and not about mourinho's character and responses.

i expect 3 more games with parking the bus madrid, barcelona should win all 3 games and prove that this kind of football doesnt work against them once and for all, the game on saturday didnt help that. at 0-1 with 10man madrid we could have finished them but we chose to save energy and just move the ball and we were punished, was 1-1 the result we wanted? maybe but by the way they played we gave them a reason to continue to do this,if it ended 0-3 i doupt mourinho would follow the same tactic. so dont blame "just" mourinho for this tactic if and when he uses it.

  25. huh? says:

In terms of football, counter attacking is the inferior style. You wait untill the opponent makes mistakes, loses the ball… In fact, you adapt yourself to the opponent

I appreciate fast football, english style. But the Invincible Arsenal, was not about breaking up the opponents game. They played their own game.

Teams playing like this, leaving the ball to the opponent, 'admit inferiority'

    :) Nice Comment!

  27. Lego_man says:

I always thought Madrid were an attacking team until now… I always thought they play great attacking football until now… I always thought they wouldn't mind sacrificing a defensive player's position for an attacker (See Madrid's transfer for Beckham and who he replaced) until now…

This isnt the Madrid that I grew up knowing. They had the greats.. they had Zidane, (Brazilian) Ronaldo, Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Figo, Raul…What happened to them?

Also, I thought sacking Pellegrini was completely ridiculous… Sure they lost to Barcelona's side…but they bagged the most points in RM history that season. 96… only 3 away from Barcelona!

That club's philosophy of buying the world's best and cramming them all into a group isn't the worst one, but it's their impatient and stinky attitude that gets to me in these recent years.

  28. RUTHDM says:

1st time on board & enjoying reading all the wonderful & INTELLIGENT opinions!!! I must thank Total Barca for Cruyff’s Corner (English translation) & the man himself – one of the greatest player of all times for his weekly column…. ♥♥♥BARÇA♥♥♥

  29. COD says:

@ campeon, did you watch the Arsenal-Barca game? Arsenal played Barca on the counter only. Man Utd always play counter attacking football. They didn't play that way in the final because they needed to get ahead first but fortunately, we scored first and their plan went out the window.

  30. ullu says:

hey u never no ajax with CRUIFF can even beat barca!

  31. LOL? says:
