A controversial decision

A controversial decision

Many of you might not know that many teams compete under Barça’s name. There are professional teams, or sections, such as football, basketball, handball and hockey that are well known throughout Europe and the world. But there are also many people, in several different teams, that are not yet professional but still compete in Catalunya, Spain and beyond. They include the Barça baseball team, rugby team, ice hockey team, ice skating team (female), athletics and female football, to name just a few.

Last week, Barça officials announced they will shut down some of these sections and others will have their budgets seriously reduced. The reasoning of the board is that they are “non profitable”. Susana Monje, Barça’s Chief of Treasury, confirmed this, adding that even basketball falls into this category. However, the basketball program will  not be getting reduced or eliminated. Nor will the amount set aside for the expense of first team signings. Keep in mind, the whole budget for the baseball section is around 300,000 euros per year. Barça, by winning the Champions League, has earned 60 million euros.

So this decision is quite difficult to understand. First of all because sections were told, when Rosell was running for president, that they have their budgets increased in order to be able to compete both in Catalunya and the rest of Spain. Josep Juaneda, head of baseball, remembers these campaign promises that have not been honoured. The same man, Toni Freixa, that promised the sections a better future under Rosell’s presidency, was the one who communicated, through a press conference and not to the sections directly, that some of them will be eliminated and others will have their budget reduced enormously.

Second, the way in which the news was communicated. Josep Juaneda, head of baseball, is saddened that “nobody told us about it. We heard it through a press conference! That is not right! We could have negotiated reducing expenses, but they wouldn’t let us. They are just eliminating us from Barça.” All the affected sections filed an official complaint to the directive board, but the result remains uncertain.

Third, the professional sections of basketball, hockey and handball are also having their budgets reduced. It is uncertain how they will compete in the future, being successful sections in both Spain and Europe. Handball has just won the equivalent of the Champions League in their sport, one day after Barça’s victory at Wembley.

Some members, and not just a few of them, are watching this worried that Barça’s spirit has started to break over economic issues. Even more, it is not consistent that, after getting 150 million euros from the Qatar Foundation, that the very foundations of Barça are suffering because resources are not being managed in a proper way. These sections might not earn millions for the club, but they certainly belong and create what is called “the Barça family”. Most of these sections include men, women, children and entire families who play for their team every weekend. They do not play in a 100,000 seat stadium but in smaller venues, still contributing to the “Més que un club” phrase, which seems more diffuse now than ever.

Non professional sections are, and have been part of Barça’s history for many years. Like education and public health, they are not supposed to be profitable. They exist to strengthen the Barça community which, even if many are not aware of it, is not only based on football. Barça’s officials, many of them with managerial and economic backgrounds, should already know that a club like ours is not only based on making money. Being a family is Barça’s most important goal. However, by applying only financial criteria, the directive board is sending the wrong message. They are, on one hand, proving incapable of managing the income coming from football and, on the other, discriminating sections by their level of financial importance. That is not the path Barça should follow in order to become the best club in the world.

this is not right… can we do something about this?

  2. 1012 says:

i hope the board set things right. rosell should fulfil his presidency campaign promises, whatever they are. handball section is pretty profitable isnt it? they won the CL. why cut expenses there?

    • Erich says:

Just because they're winning the CL doesn't mean it's profitable. Look at our football team. We win big titles year after year yet are left with a minus of 70 million Euros.

Not that I say that the budget for handball should be reduced.

  3. Tesz says:

Rosell is just a businessman trying to get as much money to his own pockets through Barca as possible. Fuck him I say.

    • Erich says:

No, that's what Laporta did. Rosell is trying to clean up the mess.

      • cule_de says:

Really? We sold our JERSEY for 150M!!! The whole Baseball budget is only 300k. Look at the Kids in the picture… Something wrong with Rosell and his Team. Their Story about our debt is strange. Real Madrid´s debt is bigger than ours since years and they bought C.Ronaldo for 100M!!!. Which Bank will refuse to lend FC Barcelona some money? Something wrong with Rosell and his Team. I don´t believe them…

        • Erich says:

So you say the way to get out of our current financial problems is to get more bank loans?

Great plan! And what does our debt have to do with Real's debt?

    • Tarra says:

"…to get as much money to his own pockets…"

Do you have any.. any SOLID EVIDENCE to base your argument here?

Because if not, then it's a DEFAMATION. I'm not a Rosell fan, nor Laporta. But I'm not going to defame those two people based only on personal judgement.

    • CanteraKid says:

Rosell is trying to make the club money, not himself. Laporta used the club presidency to furthen his political career.

However, I dont really agree with Rosell on this move

  4. david says:

Mes que un club? Looks like every year the leadership damages that idea more and more. Its a shame..

    • Erich says:

What does our baseball team have to do with mes que un club?

      • Et3rn1ty says:

        Everything?

      • Lego_man says:

you dont get it do you? Barcelona isn't just a footballing institute. it is the symbol of Catalan pride and resistance to outsiders. It was the place of refuge during the Spanish uprising for the Catalans and it represents all that is Catalan. It is more than just football, more than just a company, it is Catalonian pride.

with that said, I'm no finance student, but I smell something rotten from this story. let's just hope that Rosell fixes this problem soon.

  5. Stevecaresx says:

Total Barça (And other Barça sites) You shouldn't have posted this. The Madrid press will pick on it and it will cause a scandal.

  6. fotobirajesh says:

NO wonder, Rosell wanted Mourinho instead of Pep.

This is not going to bring good for the club. Our name will suffer.
As that coach says, they could have discussed with these people and looked for any options, before unilaterally announcing this. Very bad.

    • Erich says:

When did Rosell want Mourinho instead of Pep?

      • Marc4barca says:

good question… rosell wasn't even on the board or president when all of that went down. When you really hate someone, you spread lies… common human nature.

I don't necessarily want to be for or against rosell right now as i really don't know what is happening behind the scenes in barcelona. I like the paragraph about some of barca's business is not about profit but about helping others and this is where i disagree with rosell but why am i not angry like everyone else. simply put, i try to look at every situation rationally and right now the rationality is that we can't support others if we can't support ourselves.

We as supporters aren't the ones paying millions every week (although us buying shirts do help) so we can say whatever we want but what happens when barca don't have any money left, those who were being supported find another sponsor and we struggle to balance the check books, probably have to sell players, become like deportivo and who will you support then, i'll be still here that's for sure but who is to blame, no one but barcelona themselves and whoever is in charge during these times. Expensive lifestyle, extravagant bonuses, inflated market mixed with a fcuked up economy. there is no need for all that, and who pays the price now for their incompetence, the baseball team? the handball team, the basketball team? the non sporting sections such as charities, education? I don't blame rosell alone, i blame everyone cause until now no one was thinking of the future.

        • Erich says:

          Post of the day!

It's always easy to criticize, but it's difficult to come up with solutions.

        • Varughese says:

What is the combined loss caused by all these sections? Compare this with the loss created by the Footballing section. Why should the weaker sections suffer for economic mismanagement of the the richer section? Sounds like American economy> No surprise.

          • Erich says:

Why should the weaker sections suffer for economic mismanagement of the the richer section?

            Ask Laporta.

  7. mike in africa says:

very well written article. thoroughly enjoyed it.

  8. Dude says:

I didn't even know that Barca had a baseball team O.O

  9. barcaholic says:

I completely agree with Rossell! If the club is bankrupt we won't see any good football. So securing the basis for our joy just seems logical to me. And btw. Rossell seems to me the first president ever in Barca history that knows how to cope with cash. Thank you for this Rossell, Make our club ecnonomically healthy!

    Visca Barca!

    • Erich says:

I agree. Laporta left us in a complete financial mess but Rosell gets the blame for trying to get us out of it. It was clear from the start that this would not work without making some unpopular decisions. Many of the "mistakes" Rosell makes now were forced by Laportas incompetence when it comes to finances. That buy left us with a 70 MILLION Euro big hole in the register and a budget completely blown out of proportion.

But I guess we'd rather see our football team play the Europa League and continue having a baseball team that nobody cares about and many probably didn't even know about until now.

      • guest says:

I think what many are commenting on that you seem to be ignoring is the idea of scale. How is eliminating a 300,000 euro expenditure going to bail the club out of debt or prevent it from falling into a Europa League spot? Football may be the program generating the most revenue, but it is undoubtedly generating the most debt and is the reason the club finds itself in this financial hole.

We all want the club to find itself on a more stable financial footing, just as you do. While every penny counts, most people find it hard to believe that the path to financial insecurity was paved by funding a 300,000 euro a year department and believe it to be a public relations mistake for it to take the fall for much larger fiscal indiscretions.

      • Sergey says:

Guys, if you believe in that financial hole that Laporta presumably left us with, just look up the article "what happens with Barcelona's finances?", read it carefully and you will see that Laporta is not so bed as Rosell and you guys claim. If you are just a little bit familiar with accounting and IFRS that should be enough. If it is not, however, you can obtain revenue dynamics figures from the Deloitte Football Money League, there you can see that during Laporta's presidency between FY 2004/2005 and FY 2009/2010 the gross revenue of FC Barcelona almost doubled from 200 mln Euro to almost 400 mln – I hope that Rosell can manage the same performance…

    • cule_de says:

We will have 150M from the Qatar Deal. We have 60M for the CL win. We willl have 10M from Pre-seasons Tournaments. The whole Baseball budget is ONLY 300k.!! We pay Unicef 1M. We will pay 50M for Fabregas. It´s make no sense!!

      • Erich says:

But we have a debt of way over 400 million and lost 70!! million in the last business year!!!

  10. Fenderek says:

Hey, but we are going to bbuy Cesc, so who cares, right?[/sarcasm]

    Wrong. Very, VERY wrong.

Maybe some of the kids playing Football Manager should see a bit of a larger picture here…

  11. cescanto says:

"They are, on one hand, proving incapable of managing the income coming from football and, on the other, discriminating sections by their level of financial importance. That is not the path Barça should follow in order to become the best club in the world." – couldn't have said it better.

    • Erich says:

When did "they" prove that they're incapable of managing the income coming from football? The only one who has proven that in the last years was Laporta.

  12. cescanto says:

Reminds me of Cruyff's recent article sounding a warning against the mgmt of barca. anyone else thought of this while reading the artilce?

    • fsfggg says:

Yes. I like C first bcz he is smart passionate about barca.

    • Ackieda says:

Some people just doesn't seem to understand that all Rosell cares about is money. Yes the club has debt bla bla bla, but the people who agree with everything that he is doing is so blinded by $$$$ that they don't even realize how far this man is willing to go. The topic of re-naming Camp Nou was brought up some time ago and every one shouted HELL NO, PARANOIA, CAN NEVER HAPPEN! Well step by step he and his board are getting closer to doing something unthinkable. Every day this guy is making me uneasy. It seems like the club is slowly losing it's identity. So while some people label us as "paranoid" it seems we can't do anything but sit back and let Rosell show his true colours.

  13. Zeman says:

All this seems wrong to me at first, the non-profitable sports should have a chance to compete aswell. However, maybe the problem is that they have had larger budgets than they should have from Laportas time in charge. Something has to be done to secure our financial situation and if they reduce all other sports budgets, everyone have been treated the same. You cant really compare with the footballing side because of the income it generates.

    • Erich says:

A man of common sense. Good post.

    • _Lily says:

But I don't understand why everyone needs to be treated the same. Pragmatically, there is no reason to cut the baseball team which takes up 300k a year. "Fair" or not, that's just ridiculous.

  14. guest says:

I am all for fiscal responsibility, but this seems tactless. If the club needs to save 300,000 Euro by eliminating it's baseball team, it seems completely irresponsible to explore spending somewhere in the region of 50 million Euro + players to bring in two or three new additions to the football squad. Admittedly, the football squad is the only one I follow, but it is a black eye for the club if all of this moves forward.

  15. ray says:

I really don't like this Rosell guy…. I agree that finances need to be managed better and that we shouldnt make anymore ridiculous transfers like Zlatan for 40 mill + Eto (wtf??) or Chyrynskiy or Keirrison or Hleb or Henrique or Caceres but there is something about Rosell that I just dont trust…. He comes out with stupid comments and strange decisions…. See his latest comments on the official team page where he says "I've got the best team in the world"…. No Mate….. WE've got the best team the world.. Remember that… You represent us !!! …. I fear that he will cause us a lot of problems…. ie we may lose Pep because of him or one of our key players

  16. Arvine says:

300,000 euros is probably only a half Messi's weekly wage!

  17. LaMasia says:

Is there anything this man won't do?! I despise you RoSELL.

  18. alexlovesleo says:

This seems like the classic case of penny wise, pound foolish. To me, Rosell doesn’t care about the spirit or heart of Barça.

  19. Marc says:

Controversial, Rosell is a converso, counting every copper

  20. Hallu says:

Goes to show Barca isn't so different as we'd like to think…

    • Erich says:

Yeah, right. Because our baseball team is what made us become mes que un club.

      • Erich says:

        note the sarcasm ;-)

        • Erich says:

The one thing we definately have in common with every other club is that we struggle financially. The only difference: We struggle more than many others.

        • fsfggg says:

          the stupidity not sarcasm :)

      • Varughese says:

I have a question. Spending 900$/month on a kid was also a waste of money, wasn't it? La Masia took years to develop world class stars, but till that time it would have been eating into club's coffers. So what would you think Rosell would have done in the above mentioned scenario? Probably would not have signed the kid and would have shut down la Masia. How's that for sarcasm?

None of the Catalan fans will oppose this, trust me. But what baffles me will be everyone will go to the next anti-cut rally against the Government. The Big question is "If your Club can do it, then why shouldn't the Government?"

      • Varughese says:

No idiot, the belief that they ought to exist regardless of the financial constrain made us great.

        • Erich says:

You know that the one who starts to insult usually loses the argument?

And to compare la Masia with our baseball section is… well… laughable.

          • Erich says:

And comparing a sport club to a government?? Well…

          • Varughese says:

Economics remains the same everywhere? If it is perfect for the your Club, then it's perfect for the Government. Barca is in much better financial state than Spanish economy. Spain's economy is a total mess and could take down the entire Europe along with it. So why should I compare the Government action and club's action? After all both are a democratic set-up! I don't think the value of a dollar changes depending on whether the Government spends it or the Club spends it! In the end of the day the combined loss of all these section will be negligible compared to the loss made by the footballing structure. But still you will think spending another 80Million on Cesc(who will be a waste), Rossi and Sanchez is economically sensible?

          • anti-cesc says:

Erich, a good advice to you – never discuss with socialists, it's pointless, they'll get nothing. Let's just be happy Rosell is not one of them. ;)

  21. ray says:

Funny that I never compared him to or mentioned Laporta and said I agreed with Rosell on the Transfers…. what about the other points eh !!!!!!

  22. Anurag says:

Reminds me of what happens to other sports at the expense of cricket in the beautiful land of India…

  23. Erich says:

When did "they" prove that they're incapable of managing the income coming from football? The only one who has proven that in the last years was Laporta.

  24. Erich says:

So why then did Pep only renew on a year to year basis with Laporta? Hmm? Seems Pep can't get along with any president.

Like Rosell or not for appearant reasons. Fine. But the reasons not to like him that are brought up by some are just ridiculous and based purely on speculation.

  25. Rey Abi says:

Well. I have an idea. In order to save a shitload of money, do this:

Step 1. Do NOT buy Cesc Fàbregas for 55 million Euros.
Step 2. Keep Thiago and promote him.
    Step 3. ???
    Step 4. Profit.

Well – maybe profit isn't the right word. But at least it's not debit.

  26. Sergey says:

I do not understand why people are arguing about who is responsible for it. It is clear who made the decision and this decision is a really bad one… The fact itself is very sad, but the way it was made adds even more gloom to it…

“nobody told us about it. We heard it through a press conference! That is not right! We could have negotiated reducing expenses, but they wouldn’t let us. They are just eliminating us from Barça.”

This fact just pisses me off…

  27. indianmuggle says:

Instead of cutting the their budgets down, they should make getting membership easier for fans. That should be a good way of earning.

  28. Anon says:

A large part of Barca's appeal to fans is due to the "mes que un club". A part of that is the way the public perceives Barca. Personally, when I see beautiful football played well, when I see kids celebrating cups with their Dads/Uncles (La Liga & CL) and when I see Puyi defer to Abidal to lift the trophy, it gives me a bit of hope in the sordid mire that is professional football. Hearing that Rosell allowed announcements of cuts to the press without ensuring that he personally informed the internal leadership structure of the other sports, brings me sadness and dims the brand.

From a financial perspective what Rosell is proposing does not pass the smell test. Imagine you have a friend called B. B overspends and buys a new designer handbag ($1,200) once a month and a cup of $2 Dunkin Donuts coffee everyday. If you advise B to quit the coffee, are you helping her address her finances? $1,200 per month vs $60 per month??? Really?

I assume all that since these teams exist and have been successful, that the facilities and admin structures are in places. So the key ongoing expenses are salaries and maintenance/repairs. And seems from article that the teams would be willing to cut expenses. Hard to understand this without access to Barca's financial statements, but for me, something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

  29. Willem says:

I am a regular reader of totalbarca and I’ve never contributed but today I’m just sad about this. I knew from the very beginning Rosell was not the man for the job. Money is important, but we shouldn’t make it the end of the world and disband our great “family”.

  30. TheMessiShow says:

Sigh. This is a sad day. The club has sold part of its values for monetary gain. Qatar I can handle but this is different.

Do other sports teams even go against us when we talk about UEFA FFP? I don't think it should and logically it shouldn't because they are separate entities and don't rely on each other.

  31. _Lily says:

    This is bullsh*t.

  32. greyfox7 says:

It's no doubt the debt on the club was massive, but cutting the budget and eliminating some programs entirely that are integral parts of the Barca family is yet again against the "more than a club" mentality. For years Barca never had a sponsor on the jersey but because of debt Qatar Foundation replaced Unicef for money to handle the debt. I understand this decision.

However, there is no reason to reduce or eliminate these teams that choose to carry the FCB name. After winning the champions league and La Liga combined with Qatar Foundation, you would think the club can even increase the budget of these teams. The debt was massive but doing what is planned here sounds ridiculous and unnecessary.

Just wondering, is it possible the president (Rosell) could be impeached? Just curious…

  33. fan says:

i don't know why this is in the sports section because baseball is not a sport. you play it with your dog in the park, just like "ultimate frisbee".

    • greyfox7 says:

baseball could be a sport since there are other teams competing to determine which team is the best. If it were played simply for fun and no competition from other teams, then it would be a hobby and not really a "sport"

  34. Dude says:

    That too! lol

  35. Robert says:

If anyone wants to know the finances check page 197 of the annual report. It breaks down the finances by section.

  36. minges86 says:

id love to see a few of the senior players or coaches at the club put their hand up to give some of their wage to these parts of the club, as they do with charities, to help out. I kno its not their duty, and not even part of the football section of the club.. but they do get paid quite a bit of money
Is it asking alot? maybe, but it would show alot too

  37. Mia says:

    god damn you rosell!!

  38. barca_my_barca says:

I’m confused. How can someone who has been at the club as long as Rossell not understand the brand of FCB? The perception of the club feeds into the value of the brand. It seems that more and more Barca loses what seperates it from other sports institutions.
