Strike decision put off for 24 hours

The Spanish judicial system has put off, for 24 hours, a decision on whether the Liga games for the upcoming weekend will take place or not. A decision is now expected from Purificación Pujol, the judge in charge of the case [not kidding!], by 10 am Spanish time on Wednesday morning.

If the judge rules that the strike cannot go forward, then Barcelona’s match against Villarreal has been officially scheduled for Saturday at 10pm in El Madrigal stadium. If the strike does proceed as planned, the weekend’s games will likely be played in mid-June.

The issue at hand centers over a dispute over the terms of television broadcasts of league games between the Spanish league [LFP] and the Spanish government. Click here to read our previous coverage of the strike.

I am ashamed that Barca is supporting tis strike… the LFP has a lot of things that need to be fixed like the distribution of revenue among clubs. As a club we should want a better league, the rest of the clubs need to be able to compete from a financial perspective. Almost half the clubs in La Liga could not pay Messi's salary if they used all their TV revenue.. look to England/Germany, there is a reason those leagues are growing…

On the other hand, this might be positive for us, as there would be more time for our injured player to recover and for our whole squad to prepare better for the next game. We all know what happens after an international break…

Do you honestly believe a few more dollars for other clubs will make them compete with barca and real? it's not like they are going to get 1 billion dollars like manc and there new owners. they need to appeal to good players or buy young up and coming stars, look to there academies and not sell the stars they have now. they just can't to get more revenue and then expect la liga to be more competitive, it has to be a work in progress. They eventually have to offer more wages to big name players than the bigger clubs do to even get them interested because the prospect of winning a trophy isn't there. teams need to do what barca did, get themselves outta debt, build on their youths, sell merchandise, buy good players, tour asia or usa in pre season and get your club out their. don't blame or acuse barca of wanting a weak league cause they worked hard to get to the top, it's time for the rest to do the same.

well if this game is postponed, it would be potentially stripped of all of its importance to us. I mean if we beat Madrid, we'll be up 8 points in La liga and the chance that we drop 5 of them in the rest of the league is very unlikely. We played almost all of the deadly games already, this could benefit us greatly.

To the guys talking about sharing revenue…I'd agree with you, but I don't see how it would be fair for racing to get pay the same as Barca when they would have 10% of Barca's audience….just my opinion

i hate wen its called an internation 'break' because the only ones getting a break are the players who arent internationals…

so for me, hopefully this strike goes ahead just purely for the fact the players who r good enough to play international games get their 'break' (not even just the barca squad, but all other top players)

    I agree with marca4barca.
Also another thing to add is that if they get a money they wont invest on improving them in a sporting way… but pay off there debts!

  11. minges86 says:

true but every bit for them would help, if a clubs debts are under control, suddenly paying players/transfers/applying for more loans would get a whole lot easier

The TV revenue in Spain is bad. I think it's around 700 million (with Barca and Madrid getting almost all of it) altogether, while the Serie A and EPL and even the French League make well over a billion (The EPL makes like 1.7 billion). I think the money should be distributed based on how many views each team has. That would encourage teams to be more competitive, because they will have to earn their money.

  13. aria says:

i thought i just read from @barcastuff abt a week ago that barcelona were not for the strike? but that they “respected the decision of the other teams.” well anyway i wouldn’t call it pathetic but… unnecessary o_0

  14. MegaNo28 says:

I believe that's how it is now, the teams claim that with more cash, they'll become more competitive

I am sorry but you do not really understand how big the problem is, I have been a Barca fan for 20 years and I have seen it get worse and worse.

We spent $40M+ on Ibra and then another $40M on Villa… Malloraca is going into administration for less than $60M. This team finished in the top 10.. and its not like they have spent money on players.. they even sold their captain and most of their more markeatable players.

Mallorca finished 5th in the league and they almost went into administration, they could not even go to the UEFA and even if they did their squad wasnt deep enough to compete. In England and Germany, the last team on the table makes more money from TV revenue than our 8th placed team makes.

You talk about these teams needing to improve their canteras.. but their canteras are damn good, Sevilla, Villareal, Atletico, Valencia, Mallorca, Getafe… where do you think they get most of their players? Their canteras are so good that they go further in Europe than teams like Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal that have a lot more income.

I do not want the spanish league to become another scottish league.

The "agreement" is ridiculous, Barca/Madrid get almost 40% of TV revenue without needing to do anything…

I do not want the spanish league to become another scottish league and slowly but surely thats where we are heading. The EPL and the Bundesliga are growing and growing because they are better managed leagues… Think La Liga cant fall? Look at Serie A.

  19. ElTank says:

Itsn ot based on audience, its based on position of the table. #01 makes the most money and you go down until the last place. The teams getting relegated get a balloon payment to help them cope with relegation and not go bankrupt. Once again, look at the EPL or the Bundesliga.

PS: Our Segunda Division is sad too..

  20. ElTank says:

And after you pay off your debts you have a healthy institution that can invest in the future. Think long term.

  21. ElTank says:

La Liga is managed like a third world country.

    thats some judge name !!!!!

  23. blaugrana_uk says:

la liga does need a complete overhaul but the problem has to be barca and madrid both sitting down for the good of the league and i highly doubt barca or madrid are gonnas give up their slice of the pie that easily barca get something like €165m per season for tv rights real gets about €5m less can you see barca or madrid giving that up in the name of fairness?? la liga does need an overhaul i think la liga should look to epl/bundesliga as a good model the stadia in egrmany are always full why?? because the tickets are cheaper etc la liga will die if this carries on thsi way!

  24. MegaNo28 says:

my error, but that proposition won't help anything, the teams will complain that Barca and Real are the most popular and they would get even less

  25. Anonymous_69 says:

I don't think teams will be able to complain too much. They can't blame Barca and Madrid for being the most popular, can they? They will just have to become more popular themselves by becoming more competitive.
