Stat of the Day: Messi is human afterall

Lionel Messi has missed six penalty kicks during his senior Barcelona career: 2 in La Liga, 3 in the Copa and 1 in the Champions League. Keepers who have prevented the Argentine from scoring have included: Diego López, JC Caballero, Riesgo, Tzorvas and of course, Javi Varas.

You gotta hand it to Javi Varas. He's entirely the reason Barca didn't score yesterday. A few brilliant saves. He saved a few really good attempts by Leo…there are not many keepers in the world who can boast of that.

    • Thewildlander says:

      I agree with you…

Sevilla has always been hard to us and you can see that they were very well organized defensively, I do think however that this draw came in the right time and we need it to wave off any overconfidence signs.

Leo didn't score for two games now, I think it's enough to give him more determination than ever to come back stronger than he was.

      • NorwegianDemon says:

…and hopefully convinces him to mix up his penalties!
Quite alarmingly, he has shot to his right 16 times out of 22, including Sevilla match.
I find it odd that he has kicked across his body so many times (left foot kicking to right side).
His free kicks have improved in leaps and bounds, penalties should be easier.
The frightening thing is he can only get better.

  2. meeeee says:

he let us down, did nothing but lose the ball yesterday! im having a feeling cr7 just might be the best in the world :/

    • serendipity says:

Yeah, so change you football club and your favorite player!! Idiot!!

      • vir_indian cule says:

i make a living by betting. Football aint my passion. Its my job. So i am definitely a bandwagoner.

the only sports i love are golf, tennis and yes, you got it right, formula one.

    • cloud says:

you are lucky than messi then…you let many people down but your family and friend still think you are the best…poor messi being slammed when he need most support from everyone.

  3. Hide says:

Our love for Leo will remain same even he misses more 100 penalties.

    • shubhi1culegirl says:

      Amen to that, mate.

      • Hide says:

mate,i couldnt sleep last night.not that Messi missed the chance of winning, but as surely he was feeling guilty that made me hurt.Football wouldnt be so charming if Leo wasnt around us.we r ever in debt to loving Messi.

  4. Levan_FCB says:

Guy's did you know that Real Madrid was Founded in 1902 by two catalan brothers, Juan Padrós and Carlos Padrós and they were clubs first president. Haha what a irony! there club was founded by catalans and yet they hate catalans

    • hum says:

      relevance !!!?

      • Da Real Deal says:

and also… Spain's first ever world cup triumph in 2010 had a heavy Catalan influence in it, but they chose to have their team parade in Madrid instead of Catalonia.

        • mike in africa says:

maybe it's cuz madrid is the captial of the country… and maybe regardless which regions have the most players in it, they'd parade in the capital of the country… maybe that makes some sense…

    • minges86 says:

yep! they don't like to admit it. infact they barely mention it in their club history.

But to be fair I don't think they just hate Catalans only. I think they hate everyone. Just like everyone (except their own supporters) hate Madrid :P

  5. melissa_fcb says:

the goalkeeper is the reason barca didn't score besides the fact of the missed penalty due to his fine saves………………sevilla played a good game…………barca tried their very best ………….it's okay that leo missed, that brawl didn't make it easier either….. he still the best player in the world!

    • barcafanir says:

You are right, but I guess Messi should hear this too: Sevilla's Goalkeeper, Javi Varas : " I already knew where Messi would send the ball. I know how he shoots penalty kicks from previous games. "

      • Hide says:

All credit to goalkeeper. But I bet Messi will score 9 out of every 10 penalty to him.Unfortunately that odd was yesterday.

  6. hum says:

villa is better than messi in term of penalties and free kicks and yet messi is still takin em

  7. omogi says:

is it any chance pep will buy javi varas? just tonight i realize that he actually that good…

    • cloud says:

if we keep buying we'll become madrid. our style is nurturing youth, madrid style is buying star.

    • love me barca says:

he conceded 6 goals front of their fans eyes vs madrid (4 of ronaldo),we never want him. We want 1 that dont conced vs madrid and ronaldo.
      Gijon and levante GK!
(last line is joke for smiling after a bad night!)

  8. vir_indian cule says:

i am waiting for the manchester derby.

    Barcelona fans please support city.

P.s. I really hope madrid draw city or united in the champions league. let em’ do the work of beating madrid.

  9. minges86 says:

Loved hearing the Camp Nou crowd cheering messi even after he missed the penalty. Leo bleeds for the team and i hope he doesn't keep his head down, i hope it spurs him on even more

    • cloud says:

yeah…messi need our support now!!! this article title is not appropriate…messi is human and i proud world best player is from my species rather than alien

  10. Eto_o9 says:

We all know that sometimes the people think that the match is over and that Barca is gonna win easy ?! this is crap I hate that every single match you have to give respect to your opponent it does not matter if is Real or Rayo Valecano or Victoria Pilzen ! Than you give your best and try to win the match ! After all we are just one point behind Madrid and we already play tough teams so I hope we do better in the next fixures

  11. vir_indian cule says:

and if hes being slammed some fucker in this blog called cloud is slamming him.

I have many links in football. I only hear respect for him. no one blames him for one missed goal. Hes a already a legend.

  12. vir_indian cule says:

i just read my comment. Sorry for my bad language. I got high BP. Sorry cloud. hope i can make up for it.

And i am not logging in from my account bcoz i am on mobile. Otherwise i cud delete it.

    Sorry

  13. SilverBeatles says:

The sad thing is i knew he would miss as he had a poor game not to mention Sevilla constantly disrupting the taking of the penalty kick. **** Sevilla you just know they're going to roll over for Real Madrid and lose 5-0 or something like that. After the match i must have spent £30 on beer thats how depressed i was.

  14. vir_indian cule says:

go city go. win manure. Anyway….MAN UNITED DONT HAVE STARS. THE ONLY STAR IS SIR ALEX. AND HE DOESNT PLAY.

Become second in yor group in cl. So u can face ,madrid. And kick them out before they can reach quarter finals.

    HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

    • Eto_o9 says:

Calm down man drink some watter breath breath :D

    • odn-barca4life16 says:

So the BPL fans can then say that the BPL is better than La Liga? Like it or not we need Real Madrid and Valencia and Villareal to do well in the CL for the league not to be seen as weak

      • r1n0z33n says:

it wasn’t like that … it just .. we hate of facing real.. i felt bored when it is el classico … boring boring boring … because a lot of incident will happen .. boring!

    • Vir_IndianCule says:

Who the hell are u????? Cant u even get an original user name…???

  15. love me barca says:

messi is the best but we should accept that ronaldo is better than him for penalties and free kicks.

At ronaldo time in madrid he has had penalties more than messi all of time that he kick pentalies for barca, ronaldo never missed any penalty.(maybe 1)but messi has missed 6,he should exercise more for it. Like his free kicks that has been very very better of last years.

    • ChrisKamara says:

I'm sorry did you just say Ronaldo is good at free kicks??? If you ever watch RM, it takes him at least 15 free kicks to get one goal. Messi has a much better free kick than him and 9/10 he gets the ball on target. As for pens, I've never been comfortable with Messi taking them because he doesn't generate enough power so if the keeper guesses right there's a much higher chance of him saving it. I think either Villa or Iniesta should be on pens.

      • 1234 says:

i miss the R10 penalty kick

      • NorwegianDemon says:

Generally Messi rarely, if ever, uses sheer power for anything. I think he has a stronger shot than most would like to believe (CL final '09 he had a well-driven effort whistling just over the crossbar).

    • ChrisKamara says:

PS: Ronaldo missed a penalty against Barca in the semi final of the CL a couple of seasons back.

      • love me barca says:

i said when he has been in madrid not manU!
Not 1 ,he missed some penalties in manU,BUT in madrid i dont think.
Plz do know any1 that how many penalties has had madrid when ronaldo has been their players and how many he has scored?and for barca and messi too?
        Thanks.

        • Simi says:

And I think he missed one in his like first or second game for Madrid in preseason against some American team… I think

        • jerzdeep03 says:

Sporting Gijon 09-10 season. Remember when he missed the penalty which Benzema scored after the rebound and he started to act like an arrogant jerk for not making it.

      • R10FCB says:

I agree with you on Villa on penalties, great finisher. One player I would want to see have a go from the spot in Pedro, Supposedly our second best finisher in the squad, I want to see what he can do

    • Simi says:

Ronaldo missed in CL final against Chelsea!

  16. vir_indian cule says:

two more hours. Two more hours. Lets see whos the strongest club in england this year. They r our cl opponents afterall

    • LaneCruiser says:

Why are you celebrating a single point lead? We maintained a lot more than that, for longer, last year. And the year before. And ooops…the year before too.

  18. vora says:

Under such a tense situation, Leo stepped up to take the penalty. This young man has great courage. It's not like in a situation where you already scored 1 or 2 goals and then had to convert a penalty. It's in a situtation that all the burden was on your shoulders. Besides, the opponents were doing everything to distract your concentration. He must be feeling hurt after the miss as he could not help the team win. It's so touching when the crowd chanting his name to show the support. It showed our Barca fans care so much about our best player's feeling over a victory.

    Leo, we always love you.

  19. _D10S_ says:

And as crowd chanted last night, here we go:" MEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSI, MEEEEEEEEEEEESSI, MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSI!"

  20. GhassanCule says:

To be honest its a huge number to miss 6 penalties! i thin Villa must take off the penalties instead of Messi. i had that bad feeling that Messi will miss it last night! :(

Visca El Barca ! Viva Messi

  21. Sempre Barça! says:

I just lost alot of respect for Kanoute! Wich is a shame because he is one of the players in la that i have respect for.. If Fab said something to him i think it was okay of him to react, but what he did with kicking away the ball while Messi is concentrating for the penalty, no no no.. I did not expect this from him!!

  22. ammar says:

positive thinking: well atleast we got our first penalty

  23. SomosDeCalle says:

The best moment yesterday: After Messi missed the penalty all the fans at Nou Camp chant: "Messi,Messi,Messi"-Priceless ! I'm pretty sure we are More Than a Club ! hah… Visca Barca !

  24. Meme says:

who knows if Spain is paying any friendlies in the next International break (November)?? Argentina is playing twice for the WC qualifications

  25. barca4eva says:

what i dont understand is that when cristiano ronaldo missed a penalty (missed the whole goal) against barca in the UCL semi finals against barca in 2008 and the penalty in the finals of the UCL with united nobody criticized him but the keeper made a brilliant save against a messi penalty and people want to hate on leo….but i'm glad that us barca fans are here to support THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD and allow him to continue his brilliance :)

  26. CulesCules says:

    OT : MU – ManCity 1-6.. what a shame

  27. Slick says:

just a poor pk villa should take pk now

  28. ilpadrino says:

i hate fair-weathered fans. how many times did messi bailed us out? then some of you here are bashing. that's just stupid.

  29. johnorway says:

I don’t blame Messi, and I do not talk bad about him: but doesn’t he mostly kick in the right side, when he shoots the penalty, like yesterday? (examples: vs Real Madrid 1-1, and vs Arsenal 3-1)

  30. zdnrfor says:

    FABREGAS should take penalties :D

  31. Barcathegreatestever says:

The question is how many penalties has he taken. It hasn’t been that many. And it really isn’t his forte. I’d bet Villa and now Cesc would be more consistent in goal.
Another thing I don’t like is the illusion that Pep does what he says. No player should dictate the play. Messi looks tired and even distracted or disinterested the last couple of games. He should sit like everyone else. It would be good for him and the team.

  32. BaRcA Sweety says:

Messi will surely score in the coming games………after all he's the best!!!!!!!
he is a human and not God,,,,he can miss penalties(he does not do that every time)
    I'm sure he'll catch up!!!!!!!!!!!:)
    Love you LEO!!!!!!!!!!<3
