Stat of the Day: Messi and Valdes both reach milestones

Saturday’s double over Racing meant that super striker Leo Messi has now surpassed Kubala on the list of Barcelona’s all-time high scorers. Messi now has 196 goals in all official competitions. The only obstacle in between the Argentine and the top of this list is Cesar who claims 235 goals to his name. Not to be outdone in the attacking half of the pitch, Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes, with his 302nd appearance on Saturday, has now overtaken Andoni Zubizarreta as the keeper with the most Liga matches in the blaugrana colors.

Soon, Messi is going to be the highest goal scorer for Barca, hopefully before he is 25 years.

I think, he will also be the top assist maker for Barca.

  2. Da Real Deal says:

Over the last 2 seasons Messi has scored more goals than games played… so he's averaging more than a goal per game!!! incredible goal scoring record, he could break all types of goal scoring record by the time he finishs playing.

  3. Bazinga!!! says:

Is it just me or is mess becoming a bit selfish nowdays? Countless times, Villa would be free but messi keeps on cutting in and in and hogging the ball and eventually losing it where a pass would have been better?

    • luface1302 says:

Selfishness is also an attribute of a great playmaker/striker, name one in recent memory that is not selfish. Messi is even too generous. Though i like Villa but i bet u if it’s not for his Selecion expliots many Cules would be calling for his benching because of his many misses, mostly created by Messi.

    • Nduka says:

C’mon guys, leo is way too generous! He has given villa so many defence splittin passes which he misses most of it lyk against racing n valencia etc. If u want leo 2 b passin all d tym, dat means u dnt wanna b seeing his amazing solo runs n dribbles.

      • Felix Lengkong says:

Yeah, I do agree. Solo run would be complete and entertaining when it is topped with a goal. Also, Messi's number of assist is higher than any other forward. Messi's precision of shooting is higher than Villa. We want assurance of goal not assist for the sake of Barca.

    • Voodoo_Child says:

      Villa is always free.
Now, beeing on-side…well, that`s another story.

    • Nduka says:

Haven’t u notice dat most of d tym, villa doesn’t stay onside! Shld we blame leo 4 dat again?

    • leo rules..!! says:

i really hope cesc is back coz he is the only player who finishes clinically whatever is fed to him… messi gives assists to every one but some players (wont mention names) just cant finish..
      .
when cesc will be back he will score whenever messi will provide him and all this ongoing nonsense about messi being selfish will end..

no disrespect to villa but its soo disappointing when he wastes so many chances..hope he comes back to his best with barca as he is with his NT..

    • Adam says:

I saw Villa not being too happy with the third goal on Saturday… I guess he wants to score more, but Leo is so superb that it is hard for him I guess…

    • QatarFoundation says:

it's easy when you watch the TV replay in slow motion and say things like that. If Messi decided to dribble, it was because the defenders gave him enough space and he was feeling confident.

  4. Ram Siddhartha says:

Shouldn't that be 196 ??? Kubala had scored 194 goals and before the match Messi was tied with him …

  5. mohammad hamim says:

    good leo love u

  6. SoccerBoy says:

little leo, we all love u. u r not like cristina, so try to pass more on field

  7. Xavi550 says:

Messi and 195 goals? FAIL. C'mon guys, you're always fantastic, but this is sad.

  8. Mus says:

Messi was born to break records, its only natural. Love you Leo.

  10. barcacule says:

For once, the statistic man has failed. It's 196 goals.

  11. Iniesta8 says:

Villa is frustrated with himself… he just need to be calm

  12. hamad_ali says:

Cesc is cleared to play againast Sevilla

  13. Vir_IndianCule says:

I think Messi has solid 4 months of work to do before he can even think of breaking Cesar's record..:p

One of the comments from an aptly British-named user on that article:

"Messi is a one-hit wonder; as long as he wears a Barca shirt he's great, but put him in the albiceleste and his performance is spectacularly inconsistent even though he's surrounded by some of the best players in the world. If you reply that the system and support at Barca fit him perfectly, then you agree with me. He's perfectly suited for Barca because he has Iniesta, Xavi, and more whose manner of play complements and supplements his. But if you're talking "World's Best", then he needs to show that quality on all stages – if not for other clubs than at least for his national team. Maradona's greatness, for example, transcended the teams he played on: Boca, Barca, Napoli, Argentina – he displayed his greatness wherever and with whomever he played. Cruyff, Van Basten, Zico, and others all consistently excelled with different clubs and for their country. (Pele was a one-team player, but he excelled beyond any measure on his national team – he was Brazil.) In spite of the video games and shoe ads, Messi has yet to perform in a "World's Best" manner for his country. He's comfortable at Barca, but could he be as magical at Bolton? I'm convinced Maradona could."

Very ignorant to compare him to players who are impossible to be compared to him objectively. There is no such thing as being "Best In The World" only after you win a world cup (and the rest of the titles) – the World Cup is only contested by 32 countries, and some of those countries' teams may only play together in that tournament! Let's see – I don't think CR7 has won any World Cups lately, and yet the same ignorant people says he is a better player; by what standards exactly then?

I can only think of a short reply to the above comment: Mourinho and Mourinho-inspired parking lots didn't exist in those eras.

The problem with people saying that Messi does nothing in the seleccion, are those who only look at the statistics and NOT the actual game. IF they were watching the actual game, and not being statistic-point-dexters, they would see that Messi IS Argentina as much as Maradona was Argentina.

Messi doesn't score alot of goals for Argentina, no. But did Maradona? Actually, no. As amazing as he was, he didn't score THAT many goals for Argentina, but then of course he scored alot of important goals. But my point is that Maradona was the star of the team, he was the enforcer, he made all the magic, he was Argentina. Messi, today, has all these attributes as Maradona had.

The image of Maradona taking the ball from the center, running and dribbling 5-6 players and then scoring a marvellous goal… Only happend once. Messi has, at such a young age, done it a few times. Still there are doubters, but Messi will prove them wrong as he always does.

        • Voodoo_Child says:

          So true.
I would like to add some lines here too….

Ok, "Messi does nothing.." some might say, but what about the others?

Tevez – pichichi of Premier League last season. Bad.
D`alessandro Andres – awarded Best Player of America last season. Not called.
Saviola – MVP of the Portugal League season 2010. Not called.
Pastore – most expensive player on French League history. Benched.
Milito – best foreigner player on Serie A season 2010. Not called.
Lamela, Iturbe, Villalba – rising stars. Not called.
Di Maria – one of the best RM players. Bad
Demichelis – good on Malaga FC. Bad
Lavezzi – good on Napoli. Bad

You can keep going on and on… So , as you see, something is wrong in the NT.
But it`s players fault…or the fact that Argentina doesn`t have a decent coach since Bielsa?.
Everyone blame Messi, or the players, but thing is that Argentina does not have a good coach.

        • ope says:

so true. Messi is an attacking midfielder 4 argentina. People need to watch d games

      • Felix Lengkong says:

Football is not an individual game. It is a team game. We don't need to compare Messi with others. Just enjoy his games, the beautiful games with … Barca, the only place where I could watch the beauty of the game with Messi the leading artist/player.

Winning or losing, I enjoy Barca's games with Messi at the center. I like and love all Barca's players, but to me, without Messi around, Barca's game is like a meal without salt.

  14. ope says:

i am pretty sure messi was playing on d wings in this game. Pls. He isnt selfish. Btw villa has been missing chances and has been offside too many times. Don’t u think it will play on ur mind a bit. Even xavi seems hesistant to pass to villa. Just hope villa can stay onside more

  15. Nooje says:
