Stat of the Day: Messi 101!

Stat of the Day: Messi 101!

Lionel Messi has scored 101 goals at the Camp Nou. I could leave it at that but I won’t.

Remember all the football pundits who claimed that Messi was going to be worn out from his Copa America exertions over the summer? I think we can safely say that the Argentine has put those questions to bed: four games; six goals. In fact, the two goals he scored against Villarreal on Monday took his home tally to 101 since his debut season in 2004/05. FC Barcelona’s official website broke down the scoring like this:

  • 11/12 season; 2 League, 3 Spanish Super Cup and 1 European Super Cup
  • 10/11; 15 League, 6 Champions League, 6 Spanish Cup and 3 European Super Cup
  • 09/10; 16 League, 7 Champions League, 1 Spanish Cup and 2 Spanish Super Cup
  • 08/09; 8 League, 4 Champions League and 1 Spanish Cup
  • 07/08; 9 League and 2 Champions League
  • 06/07; 8 League and 2 Spanish Cup
  • 05/06; 4 League, 1 Champions League and 1 Spanish Cup
  • 04/05; 1 League

Messi’s first goal came in 2005 in a Liga match against Albacete, but many many memorable strikes have since followed. Which one is your personal favorite?

waiting for pele's comment like this —"i have more 0's inside"..

    • Juliet says:

      Pele's nothing compared to Messi.

      • Forca Barca911 says:

Pele is great, but Maradona and Messi are arguably better.
Brazil didn't need Pele, in 62 WC he was injured from their first matches and he didn't play any other match in the world cup, yet Brazil managed to win the WC without him.
And plus Pele only played in the Brazilian league, unlike Messi and Maradona who played in Europe, i bet he wouldn't score 1000 goals if he was in Europe.
Look at Argentina after Maradona left after the drug test, they were just an ordinary team, and modern Argentina will be nothing without Messi, 4 assists in 4 matches yet critics and "fans" are complaining.
World cup/Copa America aren't even individual records anyway, but Messi and Maradona are very important to their national teams they just can't progress without 'em.
Sabella looks like a good coach, very promising.

Point is, Pele is just one of the most over-hyped players of all time, Ronaldo (REAL Ronaldo), Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, and Platini deserve more credit than Pele, they're some really great players.

        • Cule Hand Luke says:

Forca Barca911 how much of Pele or Garinchas games have you actually seen???? I too think that Maradona and now Messi are as good or better than Pele but to claim Pele is just one of the most over-hyped player of all time when you probably havent seen much of him seems a bit much to me… There is a reason that he was rated so highly in world football… Altho the Brazilians rate Garincha as their best ever player and then Pele… To say that Brazil didnt need him is irrelevant… Barca are full of great players too just like that Brazil side but that doesnt make Messi any less important …. . I think Messi is up there with the likes of Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo De Lima, Cruyff etc…. and that he will go on to be the best of all time.

          • Forca Barca911 says:

I never said he wasn't great but ppl over hype him sometimes they start talking s**t about other great players and they think he got all three world cups by himself, it's not like Brazil is a one man team.
Greatest players of all time (in my opinion):Maradona, Cruyff, Pele, Zidane, Ronaldo De Lima.
Messi would be in 6th place for me.
But hey, the man is still 24, give him sometime and maybe he will be the greatest of all time.

    • wolF says:

for sure pele is one of the all time greats of the game, but he make fool of himself by stating over and over again that he scored over 1000 goals

  2. My favorite all time Messi goal was the 2006 league game vs Getafe. After an awesome pass from Xavi at midfield, Messi did the rest running down field with Getafe’s midfielders chasing him and thrashing the defense! I believe it was a total of six rivals trying to stop him.

    • Dr. Parnasus says:

      2007?

Yeah, that was a great goal. That, the Zaragoza goal (2010), the Arsenal goal (2011), and the Madrid goal (2011) are truly great goals of the highest order.

      • vonbelle94 says:

Best goal was the one in the UCL semi's last year against Madrid. NOT NECESARILLY because of the goal, BUT BECAUSE IT CAME AGAINST MADRID AND POR QUE!!!!!

Mehnnn…. Messi made a fun of Madrid defence in the semi's of the CL

    • Alcantara says:

Are you talking about the goal that people say is like Maradona's ? If so it was in the Copa del Ray, and i think it was 2007, and it wasn't an awesome pass from Xavi it was a simple 5 yard pass :)

    • the idiot below says:

yea it was a the simplest pass ever and right after it was pure magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Yuri says:

How did Messi only score 15 league goals in last season? This was much more right? Like 32?
How did the official website come with those stats?

  4. Barca fan says:

Best player from another planet ! Btw who the hell is tap-in-loser-ronaldo?

  5. Dr. Parnasus says:

10/11 — We weren't involved in a European Super-cup. I believe you meant Spanish Super-cup, in which Leo scored a hattrick against Sevilla.

    • Problem? says:

Yes – Also, those wouldn't have been home goals as we don't play the European Super-Cup at home. :P

    • DoRy says:

Only C.Ronaldo missing. I've always had the feeling that that's what happens in RM locker room:D

    • Anonymous_69 says:

I'm sure there nice people when Mourinho isn't looking… nah, Ramos has always been a prick.

  6. eliaso says:

    OT: life without Barca sucks

  7. Sameer says:

Hey guys! Does anyone know how many games at the Camp Nou it took Lio to reach the 101 tally? I've been wondering about that ever since I heard about the feat.

  8. Koc says:

OT: The third goal against Villarreal came like this. After halftime break it was time for Villarreal to start from the middle. They were able to keep the ball for 8 passes and then they lost it because the pressure of Barcelona. Barcelona got the ball for the first time in the second half. They made 28 passes without loosing the ball and the last pass was a pass of Thiago over defense which resulted in Sanchez goal.

    Poetry :)

  9. eae says:

in 11/12 season, messi scored only 2 goals in spanish supercup at camp nou (third being from iniesta). The european supercup was in monaco…

  11. om€ says:

11/12 spanish super cup 2 in home and 1 in away. so how they count 3? as like ESP. that 1 goal wasn’t at camp nou……

OT: From Barcastuff – Ibrahimovic (Milan): "I don't have any problem meeting Guardiola again. What happened, happened. He's a fantastic coach." [gazzetta via efe]
Is it only me or is this guy really stupid… First did it ever occur to him that if he wanted to find the problem, he just had too look in the mirror instead of blaming our PEP. I mean look at how many games he was banned from Seria A last season.
Second – does this guy have some diplomacy in saying things… seriously. Why cant he show some respect. Thank God we got rid of you..Ibraflop

    • Sepuldinho says:

wow. im quite suprised when i saw this. glad too hear that. past is past.

    • Radumus says:

Exactly, he just couldn't handle being benched by Bojan. Bojan at the time was on fire and Ibra couldn't handle it. And you're so right Ibra was getting so many cards last year in Serie A. Primadonna!

  13. nzm says:

If you add up those numbers, it comes to 103 goals?

  14. nia says:

    ibra is god.

  15. nia says:

i want to see messi score on a cold december night in stoke.

  16. Cule XH says:

Maradona – Di Stefano – Xavi – Beckenbauer – Zico – Platini – Van Basten – Garrincha – Pele – Cruyff – Yashin – Ronaldo (Bra) – Ronaldinho and Messi is one of these!

  17. barcaliena says:

isn't messi the most consistent football player ever?

  18. fuck moronho and gaynaldo says:

Well the old dude motherfucker need to stop hating on messi–the god of of foot and concentrate on his high blood pressure and cholesterol!!!!!!!!!

  19. Momo says:

The Copa Del Rey goal against Getafe in the 06/07 season. Pure magic !

  20. Albiceleste says:

My favorite Messi goals are probably, his third vs Madrid in 2007 in which he scored a hat trick against Real Madrid in the Camp Nou, his 2nd goal vs Madrid in 10-11 UCL semi final first leg, his getafe goal, his zaragoza goal, his freekick goal vs Deportivo, a 25 yard goal vs Osasuna in the last minutes to tie the game in 2008, his goal vs Copenhagen from outside the box, his third vs Arsenal…. way too many favorite goals from him
