Before yesterday’s match, Sevilla FC paid tribute to those Barça players who were in the Spanish World Cup winning side, with the Andalucian club presenting each player with a special statuette as recognition for their winning the competition.
Victor Valdes, Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, David Villa and Pedro all received the statuette which features the jerseys of both Spain and the Netherlands, with each Spain jersey featuring the name of the player it was presented to on the back. Barça sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta received the award in place of the injured Carles Puyol who had not travelled with the group for yesterday’s game.
The ceremony, which took place Sunday morning in the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Sevilla, also saw the three former Sevilla players currently in the Barça team awarded special plaques for their services to the team from Andalucia; Seydou Keita for the fantastic season he spent with them, Dani Alves and Adriano for everything the pair achieved during their long spells in the south of Spain.
Both Sevilla’s president and vice-President attended the event with vice-president Carlos Vilarrubí handing out the awards. Sevilla have already handed out such awards to the players from Valencia and Athletic Bilbao whose teams have already visited the Sanchez Pizjuian stadium this season.
