FC Barcelona president Sandro Rosell, vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu and technical director of football Andoni Zubizarreta visited player Ibrahim Afellay on Sunday to extend their support, encourage as well as cheer up the Dutch midfielder who was reported as “devasted” by his agent Rob Jansen upon hearing the news of his injury. The club’s official site said that the the trio wished to give their personal wishes to Afellay, who damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during training and will be out of action for at least six months.
Afellay went to Ciudad Deportiva with a physiotherapist from the club to start the long process of recuperation. A little later at 6 in the evening, Rosell, Bartomeu and Zubizarreta arrived at the facility to meet Afellay.
More light was shed on how Afellay sustained the injury by the player’s agent Rob Jansen on the official site of the sports management agency, Sports Promotion. “He stumbled on a pin that they use for certain exercises and then twisted his knee,” while trying to reach the ball, said Jansen. The agent said that the idea was to go one step at time and expressed hope that the recovery process goes smoothly.
Afellay will not immediately go under the knife. Jansen said that a schedule will be drawn before the surgery and that the doctors have to wait until the moisture from the knee goes. Only after the surgery is through, one can estimate how long the rehabilitation process will take.
The injury seriously jeopardises the the 25-year-old player’s chances to participate in the Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland.
totalBarca wishes Afellay a speedy recovery.
