Post-match reactions from Manchester United

Post-match reactions from Manchester United

Speaking after their 3-1 defeat at the hands of FC Barcelona in the Champions League final on Saturday, a number of players from Manchester United, as well as coach Sir Alex Ferguson, had words of praise for their Catalan opponents at Wembley. Acknowledging that Barça “deserved to win” and that Europe will have their hands full trying to stop the blaugrana next year are just a few of the comments from the Manchester contingent. More are after the jump.

Patrice Evra

The best team won tonight. I think we have to give credit to Barcelona. Even though I play for Manchester United and we always want to be the best in the world, tonight Barcelona were the best. For the moment we have to accept that for the last four years Barcelona have been the best team in the world, and United the second.”

We know each other, but they know each other so well, so perfectly. Every time Messi gets the ball he knows Xavi is going to be there, Pedro is going to be there, or Iniesta. It was very difficult, Barcelona keep the ball really well.”

Edwin Van der Sar

They played some good football, but we knew that already, and we tried to come up with something to stop them. I think it went OK in the first 20 minutes. We put some pressure on them and we held out 15 minutes longer than in Rome.

It’s unfortunate they had the first goal; it would have been nice if maybe we could have had it and maybe that could have changed the game. It was very good for morale to get that goal back and 1-1 at half-time was an OK score, but ten minutes after the break they scored again and that was hard to take.”

Speaking of Messi’s goal: “I thought I was positioned well as I thought Vidić was blocking that side.”

Nemanja Vidić

They played very well, they did a good job. When you get to the final you want to win, and obviously you feel disappointed. But you have to say Barcelona played good football, had more chances and were better than us tonight.”

I think if you look at it we have never played a team in the past like Barcelona, they played good football and deserved to win.

We tried to press high and in some parts of the game we did well. The goals we lost, we didn’t do what we have to do to close their players down. When they have time on the ball they can make the final pass and that is what they did.”

Rio Ferdinand

We gave it a better shot this time than last time (in Rome in 2009), we had a couple of opportunities.”

We got ourselves back into the game [at 1-1] and genuinely believed we could go on to win. But we’ve got to give credit to Barcelona – they were the better side on the night, they deserved to win. They’ve all got a system to work to and they know how to do it individually and collectively. We had a game plan to beat them but it wasn’t to be.”

Sir Alex Ferguson

We were beaten by a fantastic team but I expected us to do better and I think in the end we were beaten by the better team. That’s the best team we’ve ever faced – when you get teams who elevate themselves to that level it’s difficult. I think we expected to play better. It’s been a great season in many ways but it’s just disappointing to come to Wembley twice [including the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City FC] and be beaten.”

I think there’s good evidence that we’re a consistent European team now. Our record this season has been excellent but we were beaten by the best team in Europe and there’s no shame in that. Van der Sar has been a fantastic servant to United and we wish him well. He’s had a great career and played with tremendous honour and great professionalism, and that’s what stands out about him.”

Our training sessions were very good in the build-up to this game, to get as near as possible to the way they play.”

They do mesmerise you with the way they pass it. I expected us to do better, particularly after half-time, but it wasn’t to be. Great teams do go in cycles and they’re at the peak of the cycle they’re in at the moment.

They’re the best in Europe, no question about that. In my time as a manager, I would say they’re the best team we’ve faced. Everyone acknowledges that and I accept that. It’s not easy when you’ve been well beaten like that to think another way. No one has given us a hiding like that. It’s a great moment for them. They deserve it because they play the right way and enjoy their football.”

But how long it lasts … whether they can replace that team at some point … they certainly have the right philosophy, but it’s always difficult to find players like Xavi [Hernández], [Andrés] Iniesta and [Lionel] Messi all the time. But they’re enjoying the moment that they have just now. We never controlled Lionel Messi, but many people have had to say that over the years.”

The challenge is always to improve yourselves. Over the years, we’ve done OK when confronted by things like this, and taking [Barcelona] on is another challenge. We’ve some very good players and, of course, where we start to find a way forward is something we’ll mull over the summer. We’re not lacking in ideas . Hopefully we’ll come up with the right ones.”

You shouldn’t be afraid of a challenge. We want to improve. Of course, next season, we must improve even more. But we have a challenge with Barcelona. We all do. It’s no consolation being the second-best team. I don’t enjoy being second-best. Any club with the history we have – Real Madrid, Milan – they’d say the same.”

Pure class! Manchester are true footballers. That's why Mourinho will never, I repeat never, be as good as Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola.

    • orang utan says:

Agreed , nothing good comes out of mou's mouth but shit!!
Bravo Sir Alex although I never like MU , he deserves all respects.!:)

    • Amy says:

Mou wouldn't be worth to scrub the dirt off from SAF shoes… many Rm fan comments that now everyone can see that Mou was right with his tactic… yeah sure, that tactic wasn't even worth to win them the 'appealing loosers' title in the eyes of neutral football lovers.
I'm so happy that the CL final wasn't an el clasico, the differnce between this and that indiscribable. Full respect for SAF and MU, and I swear even to their fans.
This was how such important games should look like.

    • US4Barca says:

I could not agree more. Class is what seems to separate great coaches like Ferguson and Pep from Jose. I wonder if Jose really believes the shit that comes out of his mouth? He obviously has a great means of motivating his players, because he has been so successful. but does he do this by convincing them that they are victims? He convinces the press that Barca cheats by acting and diving, but notice when that happens. When playing against Madrid and they are being hacked to death on and off the ball without the referees calling anything. Jose insinuates that Barca has no honor, but where is the honor in trying to beat your opponent by fouling them. That is cheating too!!!
Anyway, Barca are champs, and Man U lost with class and responded after the match with class. Jose seems to be incapable of that!
      VISCA BARCA!!!!

      • InIesta_92 says:

jose will never learn, what surprises me is that he was once Barca.
        Now his is just shit.

    • David says:

I hear the rumors that Mou is waiting for Sir Alex to retire because he wants that job. I'm hoping that sane people win the debate there, because it would be a shame to replace a man who exemplifies stability and class (at least toward the opponent) with a weasel like Mou.

    • Vaibhav says:

      rightly said, my fellow cule.

Watch and Learn Mourinhuo…. Thats how you show your opponant respect and thats how you lose with grace… Respect to Ferguson.

    • LeRoy says:

It is unlikely that Mourinho will learn anything . You have to have some CLASS to show respect and be gracious in victory or defeat . Class is something that Mourinho NEVER had and never will !!

    • Vaibhav says:

      well said.

  8. roholte says:

Sir Alex is a great represent for football!. Pep though is way above anyone, when it comes to grace in defeat and victory!. Pep is the best represent for a football club. There is no one better!.

Watch Barca in the next 10 years and you'll see we have more at La Marcia getting ready for big things in football.

But I like the honest words they all used. Nobody blamed anybody for anything. Thanks Manchester!

  15. Tibless says:

    BARCA U AR THE ONE.

  16. Write_theFuture says:

Pure class from Manchester United, and SAF. It feels sooooo good to get to enjoy a clean, respectful, beautiful game of football the way it should be played, after Mou's nightmare classicos. It's like a breath of fresh air. Total respect to Man U, they lost like gentlemen.

Btw, I find it kinda funny how Barca works. I mean, "we do our talking on the field" has already become cliche enough bc of how much it applies, but I love how we shut Vidic and Rio up. What happened to Barca being cheaters and lucky? Huh? Or were you so concentrated on not falling for out "tactics" that you forgot to focus on playing the game, is that your excuse? Exactly. Which is why you keep quiet until the game is over. I mean, upmost respect to them for their reactions now, but I just think that those comments earlier on were out of line. As Messi says, you should save your words until the 29th.

  17. ImGood says:

Sir Alex should make a book "How to lose with style", and Mourinho should read it.

  18. MESSI LOVER says:

"But how long it lasts … whether they can replace that team at some point … they certainly have the right philosophy, but it’s always difficult to find players like Xavi [Hernández], [Andrés] Iniesta and [Lionel] Messi all the time. But they’re enjoying the moment that they have just now"

this is so true , n' it mostly worries me , but still – they have more times ,n' lets enjoy that :)

    • Troy says:

Yes, we all know that La Masia is great but look at barcelona's or even spain's history and you know it is not easy to always come up with products like messi, iniesta, Xavi. To be honest, Bartra, Thiago and Nolito are three most successful so far even though it is too late for nolito. I am still sad he is leaving but you can see how hard it is. It took years of waiting for Xavi to finally pair up with iniesta (who is finally a maestro) and control the midfield and messi to emerge at the right time. It is even a destiny that Busquet and Pedro just rush in out of nowhere to complement the best trio stated earlier. Realizing that this team is still young, it can go quite a long way but it might take another few years after this generation, before geniuses of midfield maestra (like the balllon dor trio) will be born from La Masia.

  19. smirky says:

i had to really smile inside when i realized how mou tried to create controversy, and there just isn't any. barça is and was the better team. no questions asked. the only controversy remaining from the semifinals is why more RM players weren't sent off –

brilliant showing, beautiful match. so satisfying. so deeply rewarding. hoooray! visca el barça; visca catalunya!

  20. manmeet says:

only one thing would mean even better than yesterday results and that is barcelona v madrid cl final next year at allianz arena and barca thumping madrid 5-0 in final, and look of humilationon on mourinho & crynaldo's face would make us all cules feel even better, hope it happens

Technically it's because he doesn't speak Spanish, but even if he does, he would have too much class for that…
