Official: Thiago will join the first team next season

FC Barcelona have confirmed this Monday midfielder Thiago Alcantara will join the first team squad on a permanent basis next season (2011/12).

At the beginning of the season, Thiago was involved with Barça B in the Second Division, but soon joined the training of the first team on a regular basis. During these months, he has participated in 10 games (6 League, 2 Cup, 1 Super Cup and 1 Champions) with the Pep Guardiola’s team.

On Monday, Andoni Zubizarreta, sporting director of FC Barcelona, has communicated the decision to the player.

Thanks. Yes, I read it in a newspaper. I've been worried about his contract because I knew his contract expired this season. I had heard something about a clause, but wasn't aware of the exact clause.

  2. krankuba says:

best news this year!!!! congrats, thiago! you deserve it!!! visca el barca!

  3. Barca fan says:

thats Ray Hudson… one of the most popular Liga commentators.
you should really look out for his metaphors on Barca… they are crazy and funny…

  4. Barca fan says:

    works for GolTv.

  5. messiforever says:

we can spend a sum of 20-30 mio euro for the next 3 season. we have such a great squad. the years before i was happy when the transfer market opened but now it means nothing to me. bojan will take over villa place in 2 years. thiago will inherit xavi's place and dos santos will replace iniesta someday. we just need a good replacement for puyol for the coming years. i would prefer a barca b defender.

that and the qatar deal can help the team to pay back about 200-250 mio euro in the coming 3 years.

  6. Don Barcelonista says:

Thiago has been deserving this promotion… I expect Guardiola to religiously allow Thiago to impress in Copa Del Rey especially against Real Betis! Affelay, Bojan, Jeffren, and Fontas should get a chance againt Real Betis too!

Do you still think Barcelona will attemp to bring Fabregas home after Thiago's promotion??? I think so! I have faith in Thiago but the addition of Fabregas is a must! I still think Fabregas won't join for another two years depending on Arsenal lifting any trophies at all!

    My summer transfers…
Players In: Thiago (Promotion), Botia (Excercise buy back clause), and Cristian Ansaldi… Maybe Sergio Asenjo depending on price and Fabregas is still 50/50!
Players Out: Pinto, Milito, Keita, Hleb, Caceres… If Henrique and Keirrison still not on Guardiola's plans than sell for good!

  7. robproc says:

Ray Hudson was hilarious during this game. On Iniesta's goal, he said "That was wonderful curvature like Dolly Parton."

  8. samir says:

haha he also said that iniesta was the "pale faced assassin"

  9. Zack says:

    muniesa is the new puyol
and iniesta is not so old
dos santos wont succed at barca thats for sure
    he wil never replace iniesta

  10. I know many of you are thinking this is going to stop the whole "Cesc" thing, but I hate to break it to you… It isn't going to have anything to do with it in the end.

I am SO happy to hear this news and I know that Thiago will bring a whole new, yet Barça-styled, dynamic to our game. I don't think he'll be Xavi's "successor", as he has too much of an eye for the goal. However, that doesn't mean that he won't leave his mark on Barça when all is said and done.

I don't mean to get side tracked with the Cesc thing, as this page is supposed to be about Thiago's promotion… I've just seen several of us comment on how this is going to put a stop to all of that. The kid is going to come home, sooner or later… Watch and see.

Felicitats Thiago, estem molt emocionats que et quedaràs al primer equip. :) *Visca el Barça, Visca Catalunya!*

  11. Cule3 says:

Congrats Thiago gope you get into the shoes of Xavi and Iniesta and We know you can… live upto the name of La masia and make all of us proud!

  12. nzm says:

I wish that we had Ray on Gol TV here in Spain – he's wonderful!

  13. ImGood says:

and when Pedro made a nice move in the goalfield: "ARG!! magic!!!!" hahah I love that

  14. twoleftfeet says:

Hopefully they aren't promoting him too early. We the fans certainly aren't doing him any favours by going mental over his up to now part-time performances. Let's wait and see what he does when given the opportunity to start and complete a few games in a row before starting to compare him to Xavi.
PS I still think Fontas will become a first team member before Thiago gains a spot. That's just me though.

  15. Barca_4ever says:

    ok both of u…. enough…

  16. Fenderek says:

"The boy should go back home" only when he knows that he wants to and act like it. Extending his contract with Arsenal wasn't such move.

  17. Niranjan says:

Wait another 4 years for Fabregas contract to run out. He extended his contract a couple of seasons back for a whole lot of money. Get him then and let him play as a back up for Iniesta, Thiago, Afellay. P@ta Fabregas.

  18. Keita will most probably retire here at Barca.
Milito will most likely leave and so will Pinto. Instead of buying Asenjo, i think Mino will be
    promoted.

agree with you about Botia. The guy seems to be a card magnet though. Already 2 red cards in the
1st half of the season. and loads of yellows

  19. setar says:

whats wrong with bojan why didnt he pass the ball to villa he was wide open for the goal…bojan needs to improve and i think he is feeling the pressure to perform. but i believe in him because he scored 5 goals in five consecutive games last year towards the end, he just needs time on the pitch, come on pep give him atleast 30 minutes a game

  20. setar says:

forget fab he made a mistake and now wants to join the glory of barca let him buy his own transfer fee then we can talk. didnt believe in barca why should we (fans) believe in him

  21. HouseMD says:

    Agree.
Keita is very good player. Actually, he prolonged his contract last year, so it's expected to watch him next 2 or 3 years wearing blaugrana. I'm worried about Mascherano, he didn't get much playing minutes and maybe Barca will try to change him for Cesc this summer, I think it might be possible. Even though, I'd prefer to see Mascherano instead of Busquets.
Thiago's promotion is excellent thing because he'll get more first team experience, so I presume he'll be Xavi's successor.
Milito will stay until summer, it's official now. Probable solutions for the defense are Caceres and Botia. Caceres is very good player and I hope he'll get another chance at Barca.
Regarding LB position, Abidal and Maxwell are getting older and it's right time to find another Alves for the left side. I got some ideas: Vargas (Fiorentina), Taiwo (Marseille) and Caceres.

Also, Jeffren might be sold this year. Malaga expressed interest and they're ready to offer 4M.

And… definitely yes to Asenjo! I'm sad Barca didn't get him earlier.

  22. Noro says:

yes! come on barca, give him the # 4 jersey to demonstrate more that we do not want to buy cesc.

big love for cesc for sure!

  23. Stark says:

You couldn't be more right.. i am soo grateful for this.

  24. nia says:

Afellay is the next 'pale faced assasin' in the words of Ray Hudson to describe Iniesta.

  25. MegaNo28 says:

First Madrid drop points and now this? I am on the biggest sense of euphoria there can be!

  26. Godfrey says:

betis game starting 11 should be
    pinto
    adriano pique muniesa maxwell

    afellay mascherano thiago

    jeffren vazquez bojan

    wowwwwwwwwwww just wowwwww lolz

  36. Sylviee says:

Thats a great news. Finally he get to where he worked for. But as the dicussion goes here, looks like theres already someone in La Masia to replace everybody from Valdes to Puyol to Xavi and Villa. But nobody seems fit to follow on Messi path?? :) or like me, we are hoping to see Messi will always stay??

  37. Rano says:

I'm so glad about this… he is surely the future general of barca… he will win ballon d'or

  38. robproc says:

Yes, he calls Iniesta that all the time. He calls Xavi "chameleon eyes." And in this past match, he started to call Messi a "mutant fly" because of his passing vision.

  39. Pudge says:

Delighted he is staying – he is a great talent but mark my words we NEED Cesc Fabregas for the future and I hope he comes this Summer.

Two big holes will be left in the team when Xavi and Puyol are past their peak.

Fabergas will fill in for Xavi – he is a cule and a leader and world class. He cannot be replaced by any kid like Thiago or Affellay!
Puyols role will be the hardest to fill and I think he is irreplacable. His loss will be a HUGE blow to the team – both in talent, motivation and morale. He is the father figure and the captain

  40. cule5forever says:

    isn't thiago freakishly ronaldinho-esque?
