Just minutes after arriving to Argentina from Barcelona, a couple of days ago, Lio Messi received the prestigious “Olimpia de Oro” award. As Diario Olé states in this article, Lio was really proud to receive this award, as it recognises the Argentinian athlete of the year.
As incredible as it might sound, it was his first award in his home country. Therefore, Lio was very happy of being recognised in Argentina: “I have won international awards in the past, but never at home, so I am very pleased and proud to win the Olimpia de Oro this year.”
Messi was also asked about his great year: “We finished 2011 in a great way, winning the Club’s World Cup and we also won important silverware throughout the year. I am very pleased about 2011.”
FC Barcelona acknowledged today that Lio was given permission to join the team on January 2nd, a few days after his team mates, in order to have more time to enjoy the holidays with his family.
