Ibrahim Afellay injured, will undergo surgery on Friday

Spanish daily El Periodico has reported that Ibrahim Afellay injured himself during training on Thursday afternoon. The injury is quite serious and he will undergo an operation on  Friday.

According to the medical report of the FC Barcelona medicos, the Dutchman severely damaged  ”the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” during the training session on Thursday afternoon, which was conducted behind closed doors in the sports city of Sant Joan Despi.

Afellay will undergo surgery on Friday. The period for which he will be on the sidelines is unclear as of now but he could be facing about six months out. Afellay had suffered a muscle injury in the opener of the American tour against Manchester United in Washington. He missed the entire preseason and right now after his recovery, suffers another setback, this one even more serious. Afellay will join the injured list of Alexis Sanchez, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique, although the latter is already in the final stages of recovery.

I hit the wrong button and gave this a thumb up instead of down. I'd like to give it two thumbs down. Crock of nonsense, and given that he's 31 what's the point in calling him "boy"

    Anims Afellay!!!

I'm certain that you will recover from this soon and I'll pray that you get a shot during Euro 2012.

  11. Gladys says:

Oh no, poor Afellay. This is terrible news. Not only do I always want our new (in this case newish) guys to do well, but I have really enjoyed watching Ibi in both Barca and his NT games. He brings something different to our squad (maybe not starting 11, but a nice change when needed). I already felt kind of bad for him cause he seems like such a shy, humble guy, who went from being captain of PSV to having to wait patiently for pitch time in an already packed midfield (and then there's the whole language issue). Now I can only imagine what this injury is doing for his confidence. I really hope he recovers soon and that, whether he goes or stays at Barca, he has the career he deserves.

  12. Smiler says:

The number of early season injuries I believe has been caused becuse of the poor pre-season build up with players not given time to get fit before being thrown into games. A lesson Rossell!!

  13. Saif1994 says:

6 MONTHS??? I think I just had a heart attack.. When he's back which will be the start of April, and he would find it hard to break back into the team… Get better soon Ibi

  14. hamilton says:

get well soon Afellay. Visca Afellay!

  15. Annelies says:

So sorry Ibi :( (( I'm PSV fan and know how talanted you are especially when you played in the midfield! One of the best..wish you seedy recovery because you really don't deserve this :( Hoping see you scorin goals on the pitch again!!

  16. japheth says:

    when will keita be sold?

  17. Toronto Cule says:

Given that we supported Milito throughout his long injury lay off, and even gave him enough games to prove himself after he came back from injury, I doubt Barca will just let him go after this season. He's definitely had a lot of promise, and is young. Barca is not Madrid. We support our players. We don't sell off our players until we are certain they cannot maintain the level our team requires.

  18. victor onuoha says:

    AFELLAY!!!…..get well soon.

  19. Romania says:

People ! An anterior cruciante ligament requires about 3 month recovery!!!! Not 6 ,12 months….roberto baggio recovered 77 days after surgery at isokinetic bologna .. My recovery time was 104 days !!! If the surgery is done well and the rehabilitation programme also he can return safely in about 3 months like xavi did !!!
