Guardiola: “It’ll be an excellent final”
Guardiola and Vitor Pereira spoke to the press in Monaco and gave some interesting insights regarding the European Super Cup match on Friday, along with some other tidbits. Read our compilation after the jump.
FC Barcelona will face UEFA Cup winners Porto on Friday in Monaco. As always, Guardiola had nothing but compliments for the opposition and also built up the excitement ahead of the match. Porto is an excellent side but unfortunately just lost two of their biggest stars, strong striker Falcao to Atletico Madrid and the talented manager André Villas-Boas to Chelsea. Guardiola said: “Finals are meaningful when you play against clubs with a great history – it was an honour to play against Manchester United and it’s an honour to play against one of the strongest teams in the world now in Porto. Mathematically their figures are impeccable and when you watch them play you can see they do things very well. I think it will be an excellent final, just like the Champions League was.”
“It is an excellent final between two teams that deserve it,” added Guardiola in his pre-match press conference. Commenting about their preparation for the game, Guardiola was pleased with how things are going and was rather adamant that his team deserves to be there, especially after Barcelona’s strong performance in the final against Manchester United. “We won the right to be here by winning the Champions League, and that’s what counts. We have had just enough time to prepare. At first we were worried about getting ready for the Spanish Supercup and having this game so soon after.”
Not one to make excuses, Guardiola is convinced that although the team will miss Puyol and Pique through injury, whoever replaces them will rise to the challenge. He stated that “we are lucky to be here and we have to think of the difficulties as a challenge. We always get through and we have to make sure this time is no exception.” A little worried about the good weather and if the flamboyant environment of Monaco will tempt and disrupt the team’s preparations, he also added, “we just hope the beautiful weather and the yachts won’t distract us.”
The Barça gaffer also offered his view on Porto. “They are a team that comes at you with intensity, they play well up front and all know how to play good football. There is a lot of sense to what they do. We’d love to do the things they do. They change players and managers and keep on winning. Last year they won the league without losing a match. It’s a very strong team, in all senses, they are well put together. We’ll have to perform very well to beat them.” As for his own team’s approach, he said, “We always go out one hundred per cent. When you play in finals you wonder if you’ll ever get the chance again. In part we have to enjoy it and in part we have to suffer.”
Regarding the team’s level of fitness, Pep said, “we are better than we were ten days ago but poorer than we will be ten days from now. You can’t expect to be at your peak at this stage because there’s a lot of competition ahead. If we were able to overcome such a tough test as Madrid then we have to go into tomorrow’s match believing we can win it.”
Meanwhile Vitor Pereira was given a great challenge, trying to motivate his team ahead of this match and make do with their slightly diminished squad strength. On an additional note, he has been given the seemingly insurmountable task of containing Lionel Messi, who was just crowned the inaugural winner of the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award on the eve of the game. “You can’t stop Messi with any special tactic,” Vítor Pereira said. “You stop him with a strong team performance, by concentrating defensively, covering each other and anticipating intentions. You will see our own game plan and identity; you don’t adapt to your opponent.”
Although conceding that this current Barcelona team is one of the best teams he has ever seen in his life, he made sure that his team won’t give them too much respect and will give their all for an excellent spectacle. “We’re here on our own merit following a great season. We know Barcelona are a great team, but we’re not here to see them. We came here to win this game so we have the ingredients for a great spectacle,” conveyed the Porto manager with strong conviction.
Hours before the interview, Barcelona’s promising youngster Martin Montoya was given his first call for the Spain senior national team. This surprise brought happiness for Guardiola, who asserted, “I was surprised. For a B team player to be picked for the national team is a very nice surprise. I know they’ll treat him well and he won’t feel alone.”

Fabregas looking for the second trophyyyy, in many minutes? Uhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
actually third. joan gamper
Thats a friendly but yeah
many years with Arsenal and no trophy, just 3 games with Barca and 3 trophies

if this situation continue, barca would win around 70 trophies this season
Whenever Guardiola does a press conference, he always gives the impression that he is an outsider. As if he has no hand in the way this barcelona team plays football and he is just an ex-player, lucky enough to be in the front seat, seeing this team perform. I think we will only realize what immense part Guardiola plays in the succes of Barcelona at the moment when he quits… Let's hope that moment is still far ahead of us!
very true!! i cant wait to see those behind the scenes documentaries filled with anecdotes and stories…
well actually, i can wait… i hope that wont happen for a few years yet because the team will stay at this level! Love your work pep!
why are you giving 'sports' and 'el mundo deportivo' things to fill their pages tomorrow???
oooops……
I don't get it. What are they feeding those papers?
hhaha i dont get it either… i scrolled down a bit and i think he means it as a reply to El Traductor saying something about new signings… i think
Same here! Pep is always down-playing himself, though I think his drive and his will is equally important as the players performance. There is a lot more to him than meets the eye.
I agree with that. He almost uses the third person without referencing himself as much – except, that is, to say how lucky he is to have this crop of players. Also, it seems he likes to distance himself from the media, using a dismissive, fill-in-the-blanks kind of interview (save for famous examples). I'm under the impression he doesn't really want to confront the media unless necessary, but is obliged to do so anyway. Hansom enigma, that Pep.
His sister, and others, are saying that he is introvert. Still he is very passionate and uses those fantastic gestures during the games. Very much an enigma. And very handsome.
Barcastuff:The agent of Napoli full back Juan Zuniga (25) confirmed that Barcelona, and another Spanish club, showed interest. [sportitalia via tmw]
I hope this guy is good, and I hope the news is true, as Ive been saying for a while, we're good at CB, but we really need a damn fullback.
A right back would be, so that we can sell Maxwell and keep Adriano always at LB. However, Maxwell is good enough for one more season, and Montoya will be ready after that. The way Montoya is quickly rising through all the ranks is very impressive, and he is one of the best youth fullbacks in the world.
Besides, it takes defenders a very long time to adapt. Adriano was crap during the first half of the season. He only started playing well after March, when he was better adapted. If we bought Zuniga, he would only give us a few months of decent work, and then Montoya would be ready, or we would simply lose him.
We could use some defenders, but our youth defenders are too great, I rather we remain patient. Next year, Montoya will probably be promoted and Botia will be brought back.
why sell maxwell 0_o
Adriano is great for a future starting LB as Abi becomes a permanent CB. Maxwell is great for backup. Alves needs a cover, and that would be this Zuniga guy.
Sell Maxwell because he isn't great quality. Right now, Abidal is a LB, Maxwell his sub, and Adriano is frequently being used as a sub RB, which isn't ideal. Maxwell is good enough for now, but Montoya will be better soon. Montoya can be Alves' understudy, and Adriano can stick to LB. I don't believe Abidal will permanently be moved to CB. We will see how Puyol is after his recovery. I think Pep is planning Mascherano to be Puyol's ultimate replacement. Abidal isn't exactly a youngster either. Abidal-Pique-Puyol/Mascherano-Alves. Then soon, Abidal and Puyol will retire/go to the bench. That is one of the reasons why Pep was looking for a young promising LB. I am sure that we will once again be looking for a young LB next summer.
I would rather wait a while on Montoya and keep Maxwell for a while.
I wouldn't. Just for this year. Maxwell and Adriano are two similar LBs, both Abidal's subs, no point in having two. When Abidal is out, Adriano is always his sub, which creates a problem for Maxwell, and once again leaves us without a RB sub. I would rather keep Adriano at LB permanently, and keep someone else at RB permanently. Plus, Montoya needs to be training and playing right now with Alves. Training with the first team a lot, playing mostly with the B team, but getting called up a lot and playing a few matches with the first team. I think Montoya will have a similar role to that of Thiago's last season.

Come off it, guys. Pep knows precisely what he is doing. He says he doesn't want/need another player right now, and you keep insisting he is wrong. Seems awfully arrogant to me.
Pep is great but not perfect.
Many critizised the Ibra deal and were proven right. I hope we, the critics, are proven wrong this time.
Pep was not wrong about Ibra. Ibra was the one who was wrong. And the moment Pep realized it, he got rid of him.
People who are always right don't exist. People who correct course in midstream are the geniuses.
espn is showing a series of classisco two games every day two tonight so sweet
Wembley Have one of the best pitchs in the wolrd , which monaco unfortunatly don't have im more worried abt our players safety than the spectacle look at the pitch condition it's awful it's a shame that such a big fixture be played in such a poor stadium.
to pep we need another cb asap plzzzzzzz.
i think of all people, Pep would know if we needed one or not
Thank you, minges! Who do these people think they are who keep whining about the supposed inadequacy of Pep's carefully arranged squad?
exactly. maybe with fifa 12 coming out soon they want a better squad list?
Messi is going to score on a Fabregas assist on this one. Any bets???
Messi should learn english.
He's the best player in the world. He has to learn English, it's important.
Why can't he speak English? Spanish isn't enough!
i assume you're an american. why don't you start learning spanish as english isn't enough?
I think he has a point. Messi is the best in the world, so everybody would like to hear his speeches. Yeah he can always adress people in Spanish, but it would be much easier if he can speak English. You know, just like how Pele throws around his shitty predictions all these years
Messi barely gives interviews/press conferences. Since he doesn't do it much, it isn't inconvenient for a translator to help him once in a while.
Messi's game is enough for me! I don't want him taking any time away from whatever it is he is doing to play the way he is playing.
messi can do his talking on the pitch. thats all that matters
I wonder why. He loves his mother tongue and he is really comfortable in his language. Nor is their anything awaiting for him, just because he learns English.
He speaks volumes and we understand him a lot through his game.
Even if I dont understand Spanish, I enjoy watching him talk. Really shy and cute, like yday during the awards.
Don't know about Porto but I'm sure it will be excellent for us.
Messi should form a new country/religion/language, not to learn english
FOOTBALL IS THE LANGUAGE HE UNDERSTANDS BEST!!!
It is a privilege to be a Barca fan and to live through these historic times. These golden moments were forged because of Barca's willingness to take a chance on their own, from the coach to the bulk of the players.
Pep is a fantastic coach and an inspiring individual. I stand in awe.
with the size of the squad generally bigger than last season, i have no concern about squad's depth. the only missing link is extra defender, with both puyol and pique are gone; it is the worst scenario in defensive sector.
