[Updated] Get ready for the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala

The team here at totalBarca knows what it will be doing on Monday, January 10. We will be glued to our computer/TV screens, at work or home, looking for each and every piece of information that rolls in from Barcelona, from where our players, coach and officials will board the flight for Zurich, where one of the most memorable moments in FC Barcelona’s history will take place. Moments like this don’t come ever so often. So relish it and cherish it. You ought to. You deserve to.

- Travelling along with the nominees Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Pep Guardiola are Gerard Pique, David Villa and Carles Puyol. This strongly hints that they are in the list of the FIFA FIFPro World XI. If Messi, Xavi and Iniesta are also in the list, which is quite likely, it results in a scenario that Barcelona could have six of the possible 11 players.

- The official site reports that also on the flight to Zurich is “a large party of directors, ex-coaches and ex-players” such as Luis Suarez and Hristo Stoickhov. This is what some of the people had to say before they left to witness what is going to be a great night for FC Barcelona.

President Sandro Rosell

“This is undoubtedly a great day for FC Barcelona. It’s one of those occasions that you know it will be difficult to repeat. Thanks to the hard work and time given by so many people over the last 30 years, this day has come and we are now seeing the result of all their efforts.”

“The Club is happy that whoever wins, Barça will be victorious. I’m sure that all three of them will be pleased whoever wins. They are three great teammates, as they show out on the pitch.”

“This is a great day for the club, but it’s bitter sweet with the news of Angel Pedraza’s death.”

Luis Suárez

“This is very satisfying – I was tired of no other Spanish player winning the award and especially as it will be like me, a Barça player.”

“It’s a great satisfaction because I’ll be in good company, I’ll be meeting up with people who who I’ve shared a lot with.”

Hristo Stòitxkov

“I’m very proud – it’s not just anybody who wins this.”

“We are enjoying the best years of the club and it’s down to the work done from the youth teams to the first team.”

“Personally, when I won I was very emotional. It’s an award for the family, friends, coaches, teammates, fans…..”

Àngel Mur

“I would stress, even above their footballing skills, their humility and hard work.”

“I imagine they must be feeling so happy and so satisfied.”

Pere Gratacós

“This is a success, not just for two or three players, but also for a sporting model which started many years ago with Oriol Tort and Joan Martínez Vilaseca and has been very well continued by the other co-ordinators.”

“It’s clear that Barça wanted this way. The club model will never change, we’ll always stick by it.”

Joaquim Rifé

“Messi is one of the best players in the World and one of the best people to come through the Club.”

Toño de la Cruz

“It’s a non-stop party. It’s an extraordinary thing for our footballing philosophy. This is the biggest prize a player can receive.”

“The best thing about these ceremonies is the chance to meet up with people who you have had important times with in the past.”

FIFA.com tells us what to expect. The day will start off with a press conference featuring nominees for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and the FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s Football awards. It will be streamed on the site.

Thereafter, the FIFA Interactive World Player of the Year will be named and that ceremony can also be seen live on FIFA.com. Cules can look forward to one of the highlights before the actual gala, when the  holy trinity – Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandes – will participate in the press conference at 15.00 CET (convert) as contenders for the FIFA Ballon d’Or. Later, club coach Pep Guardiola will be seen along with Jose Mourinho and Vicente del Bosque, all nominees of the FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men’s Football award, wrap up the interaction with media. Those with slow internet speeds who can’t see the videos can wait for summaries of these two press conferences on fifa.com.

Finally at 19.00 (convert) the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala commences. Other awards at stake are the FIFA Presidential Award, the FIFA Fair Play Award and the FIFA Puskas Prize, in which Messi is one of the ten nominees. Also, 11 best players of the world as voted by their peers will be named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI. By 20.00 one of the three Barca players would have entered the history books as the first recipient of the inaugral award.

Where and with whom will you be watching the ceremony? Do you have anything special planned? Tell us in the comments.

  31. mateo9 says:

There is too much attention for this price, football is a teamsport and the real footballprizes are won on the pitch not in contests like this. This is more like a big mediacircus. FcBarcelona plays arguably the best football ever played before by a team and this is not thanks to one or two players, but thx to the whole team,, including substitutes and coaching staff. If you analyze Barcelona's football you can see this team can play this great football because every player plays his part. They all work their socks off, they are all technically skillfull, keep filling positions without the ball, when they lose the ball they agressively and collectively try to get the ball back, they play the ball around very fast and unpredictable, they always stick up for each other and never let someone be isolated on the pitch. They put the team first and not their own ego. The way Barcelona plays at the moment is a great example how a team of people can successfully work together. That some players can excell is because the team supports them, and if Barcelona play their best all the players individually excell in their own capacity.
